Abstract

Tourism development in natural attractions often brings both positive and negative implications for the local communities. This study aims to analyze the sociocultural impacts of tourism on local communities in nature-based tourist destinations in Indonesia. The research uses a qualitative approach with case studies in several national parks and protected forest areas that have become major tourist attractions. Data collection techniques include interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that tourism has significantly influenced community behavior, local traditions, and value systems. On one hand, tourism has increased intercultural exchange, income, and education awareness. On the other hand, it has caused commercialization of culture, cultural identity dilution, and social conflicts due to land use and economic inequality. This research contributes to a better understanding of the complexities of tourism development, and suggests that a participatory approach to tourism management involving local communities is crucial to maintain the sociocultural sustainability of destinations. Future studies should consider longitudinal analysis and comparative research across different cultural settings.

Abstract

This article explores the role of sustainable tourism development in enhancing the welfare of local communities. Sustainable tourism emphasizes the long-term preservation of natural and cultural resources while providing economic benefits to the host population. The purpose of this research is to analyze how tourism strategies rooted in sustainability principles contribute to improving community income, employment opportunities, and environmental stewardship. The study applies a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study in the coastal village of Sesaot, Lombok, Indonesia. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, and were then examined using interactive analysis techniques. The findings indicate that sustainable tourism initiatives—such as community-based tourism and eco-tourism—have significantly increased local participation, diversified income sources, and raised environmental awareness. However, challenges such as limited infrastructure and institutional support still persist. This paper concludes that sustainable tourism is a viable strategy to promote inclusive economic development, especially in rural or natural destinations. Strengthening collaboration between stakeholders and consistent policy support are essential to sustain the long-term benefits.

Abstract

Over-tourism has become a significant issue in many popular tourist destinations worldwide, where excessive visitor numbers exceed the carrying capacity of the environment and communities. This study aims to analyze the impact of over-tourism on environmental quality and the social well-being of local communities. A qualitative research design was applied, involving literature reviews and field observations in selected Indonesian tourism destinations. The findings show that over-tourism contributes to environmental degradation, including waste accumulation, air and water pollution, and biodiversity loss. Additionally, it disrupts the daily lives of local residents, leading to cultural commodification, increased cost of living, and reduced quality of social interactions. However, the study also highlights the resilience of local communities in adapting to tourism challenges, while emphasizing the need for sustainable tourism management strategies. The research concludes that policy interventions, community participation, and responsible tourism practices are crucial to mitigate the negative impacts of over-tourism. This study contributes to the broader discussion on sustainable tourism development and provides recommendations for balancing tourism growth with environmental conservation and community welfare.

Abstract

Tourist satisfaction is a key indicator of the success and sustainability of natural tourism destinations. This study aims to analyze tourist satisfaction with the facilities and services provided at a natural tourism destination. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method with survey techniques distributed to 200 visitors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and customer satisfaction index (CSI). The results show that the overall satisfaction level is in the “satisfied” category, with the highest satisfaction derived from natural beauty and cleanliness, while the lowest comes from the availability of supporting facilities such as parking areas and public restrooms. The findings indicate that while the destination is attractive in terms of its natural resources, service quality and supporting facilities still need improvement. This study contributes to the literature by providing insights into the relationship between visitor satisfaction and sustainable tourism management. The implications suggest that destination managers should prioritize investments in infrastructure and service quality to maintain competitiveness and encourage repeat visits.

Abstract

Coastal tourism destinations have significant economic potential but are also vulnerable to environmental degradation if not managed sustainably. This study explores the implementation of sustainable tourism principles in the management of coastal tourism areas. The purpose is to identify effective strategies that balance environmental conservation, community involvement, and economic development. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through field observations, semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders, and literature analysis. The findings reveal that sustainable management practices, such as waste management, zoning systems, community empowerment programs, and eco-friendly infrastructure, have a positive impact on both environmental quality and local livelihoods. However, challenges remain in terms of policy enforcement, limited stakeholder coordination, and lack of environmental awareness among visitors. This study concludes that sustainable coastal tourism management requires strong collaboration between government, local communities, and private sectors, supported by continuous education and monitoring programs. The results provide practical implications for policymakers and destination managers to design long-term strategies that ensure both environmental sustainability and community welfare.
