Abstract

Action movie has established itself as one of the leading movie genres which has been present in the film industry for a long time. However, action movie genre has been characterized as male-oriented. This study aims to reveal the issue of patriarchal society and women's position represented in action movie entitled Taken, directed by Pierre Morel. Research problems in this study are related to: (a) how is the superiority of men depicted in the movie, and (b) how is women represented as the secondary subject. To analyze the movie, this study used the theory of Simone de Beauvoir especially in her book, The Second Sex. The result of this study showed that Taken movie reproduce the stereotype of action movie genre as male-oriented and women is considered as the secondary subject.Keywords: Taken, Action Movie Genre, Patriarchal Society, Secondary Subject, Simone de Beauvoir.

Abstract

This study is aimed to uncover power domination in a film entitled Zootopia, directed by Byron Howard & Rich Moore. The directors portray how power domination occurs in the protagonist character in the movie. Howard reveals that the shape or size of a person's body does not hinder their dreams of becoming whatever they dream of. For example, if there are creatures that have large bodies, it does not mean they are the most powerful and feared by other creatures.  Conversely, if there are small-bodied creatures, it does not mean they are always weak and are pessimistic people, who are afraid in any case, including realizing their dreams.  Howard also believes that if we believe in our abilities, all the words of people who doubt our ability will not affect ourselves to stop and give up what we expect. In this case, the writer would analyze the power of domination based on their form of body shape and body size. In addition, the theory by Max Weber will be applied in this study. The result of this study disclose that physical appearance does not affect one’s power. It can be seen that even though the protagonist character has small body, she also has power domination. It is proven that she could compete fairly with her opponent who has a bigger body, has the right and high self-esteem in defending the truth, and can achieve her dreams even though her body is small.Keywords : Power domination, Zootopia, Max Weber, Children Literature.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji Cerpen Lelaki Pemanggul Goni karya Budi Darma yang diterbitkan harian Kompas pada tanggal 26 Februari 2012. Penulis Budi Darma disinyalir sebagai penulis karya-karya postmodernisme. Penulis mengasumsikan cerpen tersebut memiliki kemungkinan ciri-ciri postmodernisme. Untuk menguji kadar postmodernisme dalam cerpen “Lelaki Pemanggul Goni”, penulis akan menggunakan teori fiksi postmodernisme dari Bian McHale. Penelitian akan difokuskan pada: (1) zona, (2) strategi pengembangan zona, dan (3) konstruksi postmodernisme, yang dibatasi pada; (a) dunia dibawah penghapusan, dan (b) dunia kotak Cina. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa cerpen “Lelaki Pemanggul Goni” ini memiliki ciri-ciri postmodernisme. Dalam novel ini terdapat enam tempat dimana tempat-tempat tersebut memiliki proposisi ontologis sendiri-sendiri, yakni: (1) Apartemen, (2) Burikan, (3) Barongan, (4) Negeri yang Terkenal Makmur, (5) Gunung Muria dan (6) Hutan Madaing. Kecuali itu, tempat-tempat tersebut berjajaran dan berlapisan membangun sebuah zona. Zona ini pun dibangun atas dasar proposisi ontologis tertentu yang kemudian membangun zona cerpen LPG secara keseluruhan. Terdapat dua pembangunan zona, yakni penjajaran (juxtaposition) antara apartemen, Barongan. Dan pelapisan (superimposition) yang pertama adalah pelapisan antara apartemen, kampung Barongan, Gunung Muria, Hutan, Kampung Gurikan, kedua pelapisan antara apartemen dan ‘negeri yang terkenal makmur’. Dalam hal dunia-dunia di bawah penghapusan, cerpen LPG memunculkan struktur ontologis yang berkaitan dengan Sesuatu terjadi , Sesuatu Ada, tengah-tengah yang dikeluarkan, cerita bercabang, dan pengertian tentang ke(tidak)berakhiran. Dalam dunia-dunia kotak Cina, cerpen LPG memunculkan struktur-struktur ontologis yang berkaitan dengan menuju kemunduran yang tak terbatas.Kata Kunci: Postmodernisme, Brian McHale, Budi Darma, Struktur Ontologis.

Abstract

Tulisan ini bertendensi untuk membedah tabir setiap lapis semiotika iklan rokok. Iklan (rokok) diandaikan sebagai representasi dari relasi antara penanda dan petanda, bahkan yang dianggap tidak memiliki basis relasional sekalipun, bersejajar dengan ideologi yang dibawa dalam dirinya untuk kemudian membentuk sebuah tanda. Objek penelitian ini iklan rokok Gudang Garam Signature versi ”Ancaman Baru” (2019). Pendekatan semiologis Roland Barthes dijadikan sebagai alat bantu dengan maksud untuk menemukan makna denofatif, konotatif dan mitos di balik iklan. Metode kualitatif deskriptif dimanfaatkan sehingga menghasilkan deskripsi yang komprehensif. Kesimpulan awal penelitian adalah: rokok dan aktivitas merokok erat kaitannya dengan cara lelaki untuk merepresentasikan diri sebagai subjek yang rasional, pekerja keras, dan pasionet.Kata kunci: Semiotika Visual, Iklan, Roland Barthes, Mitos Lelaki.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berusaha untuk mengkaji konsep nasionalisme dalam pada puisi “Suara-suara dari Rumah Miring” karya Wiji Thukul. Sebagai pengarang dengan ideologi realisme sosialis, Wiji Thukul kerap dikaji dalam kaitannya dengan wacana kritik sosial yang acap muncul dalam puisi-puisinya. Penelitian ini mencoba untuk melihat karya Wiji Thukul dengan pendekatan postkolonial. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah konsep nation dalam kerangka teori spasial politik sebagaimana dikembangkan oleh Sara Upstone. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam puisi “Suara-suara dari Rumah Miring” muncul kritik terhadap konsep nasionalisme semu yang dikonstruksi oleh penguasa. Nasionalisme yang dikonstruksi tersebut bersifat cair, dibangun sesuai dengan kepentingan untuk melanggengkan rezim. Tidak heran apabila muncul pendapat bahwa nasionalisme masa kini hanyalah sebuah transformasi dari kolonialisme di era pasca-kolonial, oleh sebab mewarisi sifat-sifat bawaan kolonialisme.Kata Kunci: Nasionalisme, Postkolonialisme, Sara Upstone, Wiji Thukul, Realisme Sosialis.

Abstract

This study is purposed to uncover strengthening racial stratification done by African-Americans characters in a film, entitle The Help, written and director by Tate Taylor. This movie portrays the life of black maids who suffering racial stratification conducted by white women in Jackson Mississippi during the 1960’s. This study seeks to argue that the strengthening of African-American characters in this film highlights the racial attitude from the white women attitude. To analyze this film, a concept of racial stratification by Martin N. Marger is applied. The result of this study shows that the African-American characters in The Help strengthening their racial stratification for being diversity of appearance and diversity of class social. Taylor shows that the racial stratification is shown by white women who separate their social class as employers from black women who are maids. The maids get many differences of the facilities and attitude from their employers.Keywords: racial stratification, African-American, The Help.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis konsep dunia posmodern dalam kerangka teori fiksi posmodern Brian McHale pada cerpen "Mengenang Kota Hilang" karya R. Giryadi. Seperti halnya judulnya, cerpen "Mengenang Kota Hilang" mengisahkan tentang sebuah kota yang hilang dengan pendekatan permainan narasi fantasi. Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian terkait dengan ciri-ciri dunia posmodern dalam fiksi, dalam hal ini yakni cerpen "Mengenang Kota Hilang". Pendekatan teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori fiksi posmodern yang dikembangkan oleh Brian McHale. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat beberapa karakteristik dunia posmodern dalam cerpen “Mengenang Kota Hilang” karya R. Giryadi. Ciri-ciri dunia posmodern dalam cerpen “Mengenang Kota Hilang” dapat dilihat dari pembangunan zona melalui strategi interpolation (penyisipan) dan misatribution (misatribusi), kebanalan (permainan narasi fantasi), relasi historis, dan intertekstualitas.Kata Kunci: Dunia Posmodern, Brian McHale, R.Giryadi, Puitika Pascamodernisme.

Abstract

The movie entitled 12 Years a Slave movie written by John Ridley and directed by Steve McQueen is a movie about the African-American, Solomon Northup, being a slave. This movie is reflection of the real social condition in the era of 1981s such as gets an unequal treatment or discriminative attitudes through the colonizer in United States. The purpose of this study is to uncover the racial discrimination toward the character. As an African- American writer, Ridley depicted a story about an African-American freeman character enslaved in the United States for 12 years. Ridley argues that this condition gives the African- American character to get a position of being mistreated and being segregated in the society. To analyze this novel, the theory of Ali Rattansi (2007) is used to support the concept of the racial discrimination. The result of this study shows that the African-American character in 12 Years a Slave suffers from the racial discrimination trough the mistreated by the superior and also, they are being segregated in society, and finally it leads his existence as the minority.Keyword: African-American, Slavery, Racial Discrimination, Ali Rattansi.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis konsep hasrat dan arus bawah sadar dalam kerangka teori psikoanalisis Jacques Lacan pada cerpen "Antara Den Haag dan Delft" karya Rilda A. Eo. Taneko. Cerpen "Antara Den Haag dan Delft" menceritakan tentang pergulatan batin dan persoalan identitas seorang kakek pada masa mudanya yang melakukan perjalanan lintas negara. Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini antara lain terkait dengan hasrat dan arus bawah sadar yang terjadi pada tokoh kakek, utamanya terkait dengan persoalan identitasnya. Pendekatan teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori psikoanalisis yang dikembangkan oleh Jacques Lacan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tokoh kakek memiliki hasrat untuk menjadi orang Belanda, meskipun pada dasarnya ia tetap hidup sebagai "liyan". Hal tersebut menunjukkan adanya ketidakutuhan dalam pembentukan kepribadiannya seperti halnya pada konsep psikoanalisis Lacanian.Kata Kunci: Psikoanalisis, Lacan, Rilda A. Eo. Abstract

This study is aimed to uncover some Marxist issues in one famous poetry in Romantic period: Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Song to the Man of England". Shelley sees that life with hierarchy in social structure is not fair. The life of working class is so miserable. They work hard with all of their power, energy, time, and mind to serve the landlord. However, the working class never get a fair justice for their life. Some concepts of Marxism such as class struggle and alienation will be used as theoretical framework in this study. The result of the study shows that Shelley’s “Song to the Men of England” represent the characteristic of romantic poem written by romantic poet which is full of the sanctity of imagination. It constructs an ideal world based on the contemplation of beauty. It tries to be the founder of civil society and the inventors of the arts of life. It tries to be a kind of prophecy which has ability to change the condition of politics, social, and spiritual life, especially the life of working class in England.Keywords: Marxism, Alienation, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Romanticism.
