Folia Medica Indonesiana, as indicated by its name, focuses on publishing good quality articles about research and education on health science and medicine in Indonesia. However, due to the fast growth of science and knowledge in these fields, we also welcome submitted articles from around the world, especially the ones that contain related matters from lower-middle income countries. Folia Medica Indonesiana is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal that is published online at least four times a year. The scope covers various aspects of basic medical sciences includes anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, and molecular medicine) and clinical medicine (covers specialties like internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, oncology, psychiatry, etc). We highlight the pathology and potential treatment of metabolic syndromes and infectious diseases. Folia Medica Indonesiana also encourages the publication of articles about health education. The scope includes, but is not limited to, articles that emphasize on preventive education on certain diseases in a community, also research report of various materials and/or methods to develop medical education. We recognize the importance of this type of articles to be published alongside the assigned topic in each of our yearly issues, to provide our readers with updated information in medical sciences’ research and education simultaneously.

Abstract

DM with ulcer can result in a decrease in the quality of life of patients and need to reduce the intensity of pain and odor on the ulcer, preventing amputation and Hyperbaric Oxygen as an adjuvant therapy in accelerating wound healing. This study aims to explain the effect of HBO on the quality of life of patients with diabetic foot ulcers at RSAL Dr. Ramelan Surabaya. Methods: The research used quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design approach. The samples were 70 patients from population of all diabetes patients who suffered from diabetic foot ulcers at RSAL Dr. Ramelan. Data were collected by WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Analyzed byWilcoxon signed rank test and Mann Whitney U test. Result: Mann Whitney in the post test, the physical p-value domain (0.000), psychological domain (0.012), social domain (0.003), and environmental domain (0,001), where the intervention group has a better value than the control group. Wilcoxon signed rank test results on the physical domain (0,000), psychological (0,012), social (0,003), and environmental (0,001), meaning there were significant differences between pre post test in intervention group. Discussion: Diabetes mellitus patients with foot ulcers given hyperbaric oxygen showed improvement on wound condition, thus reducing pain and medical needs. This makes patients motivated, reduce anxiety, and improve interpersonal support and confidence. Therefore, it is necessary to socialize the effect of HBO on DM patients with foot ulcer, as a treatment option in improving the quality of life of DM patients with foot ulcers.

Abstract

After approximately 6 months of age, term breastfed infants are increasingly depend on other sources of iron to avoid iron deficiency anemia, due to the depletion of the low concentration of iron in human milk. The appropriate complementary feeding must include a balance composition of foods containing an adequate amount of macro- and micronutrients to avoid iron deficiency anemia. This study aimed to compare the risk of iron deficiency and growth in breastfeed infants receiving commercial fortified complementary foods or home-made. A cross-sectional study was held on April-June 2016 to evaluate infants aged 6-24 months with breast feeding intake for 6 month of life. Complementary feeding practices were determined by questionnaire; an unquantified food frequency and feeding practices questionnaire was used to determine usual food intake. Biochemical assessment of haemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin (SF) and serum iron (SI) level were measured. Anthropometric were assessed using WHO Child Growth Standard 2005. Statistical analysis used were Chi-square Test. Thirty eight infants were enrolled, mean age of 16.2 (SD 10.5) months. 17 infants consumed commercial complementary foods and 21 infants use home-made. Infants with home-made had lower Hb level, SF and SI than those receiving commercial complementary food, and had higher risk of underweight, stunted and wasted. Infants with home-made complementary food had lower haemoglobin, serum feritin and serum iron levels than those in fortified complementary food CF; and a higher risk of stunted and wasted than children with commercial fortified CF.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of different dose methylmercury (II) chloride on astrocyte in cerebellar cortex of white rat (Rattus norvegicus) exposed. This study used randomized control design using 15 adult female Wistar rats weight 180-200 g of body weight. Before treatment the white rats was adapted in a week, then randomly divided into 3 groups each consist of 5 rats. P0 as control were given 0.5 ml aquades, P1 and P2 were given 0.1 and 0.2 mg/kg/day respectively. All groups were given treatment per oral in 30 days with sonde. The data was analyzed by ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range (Duncan's Multiple Range Test). White rats exposed by methylmercury (II) chloride, had a significant differences in the percentage of necrotic astrocyte (p<0.05). Methylmercury chloride exposure increases the number of necrotic astrocytes on white rat.

Abstract

Overweight and obesity is a major health problem in throughout the world. Hyperlipidemia and obesity are risk factor the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. Exercise is recommended as a therapeutic lifestyle changes because it leads to a variety of health benefits. Fun Aerobic gymnastics aerobics one which is quite popular in the community and a gym. Describe the gymnastics fun aerobic workout's effectiveness against related to prevention of cardiovascular disease with seeing the results before and after doing gymnastics with the result of increasing levels of HDL-c and LDL/HDL Ratios as well as lowering LDL-c levels. Using design research one group pretest and posttest design with the subject as many as 19 people and given gymnastics moderate fun aerobic intensity for 45 minutes 3 day a week for 6 weeks. Gymnastics moderate fun aerobic intensity can increase HDL-c and LDL/HDL ratio and LDL-c. The paired t test results HDL-c pre test and post test (p = 0.000), LDL-c pre test and post test (p = 0,015), HDL/LDL Ratio (p = 0.000). Mean there are meaningful difference between the before and after of gymnastics. The effect of moderate intensity fun aerobic gym on the increase of HDL-c and LDL/HDL Ratio and a decrease in LDL-c in overweight women.
