Abstract

Streptococcus suis is an important zoonotic pathogen in pigs that causes substantial economic losses and public health concerns. Vaccination using local bacterial strains is considered a promising approach to improve antigenic compatibility and protective immune responses. However, information regarding the effects of different vaccine adjuvants on total erythrocyte counts remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate total erythrocyte counts in piglets vaccinated with an inactivated local S. suis strain formulated with different Montanide™ adjuvants. A total of 12 eight-week-old male Landrace piglets were randomly divided into three groups: control (sterile 0.9% physiological saline), vaccine with Montanide™ ISA 201 VG, and vaccine with Montanide™ Gel 01. Vaccination was administered intramuscularly twice at a 28-day interval. Clinical observations, body weight measurements, and blood sampling were performed weekly for nine weeks. Total erythrocyte counts were analyzed using a VetScan HM5 hematology analyzer, and data were evaluated using repeated measures ANOVA. No significant differences in total erythrocyte counts were observed among treatment groups (p > 0.05). However, observation time significantly affected erythrocyte counts (p < 0.05), with temporary increases occurring during weeks 3 to 5. Overall erythrocyte values remained within normal physiological ranges. In conclusion, inactivated S. suis vaccines formulated with Montanide™ ISA 201 VG and Montanide™ Gel 01 did not significantly affect total erythrocyte counts in Landrace piglets and were well tolerated under the conditions of this study.

Abstract

Companion animals, especially domestic cats, are known to be colonized by Staphylococcus aureus, which produces exotoxins known as staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs). However, the role of cats as reservoirs of enterotoxin-producing strains and their impact on human health remain insufficiently understood. This study narratively reviewed existing literature to examine the relationship between feline-associated S. aureus and the effects of SEs on human health. Findings indicate that cats can harbor S. aureus in multiple anatomical sites and act as asymptomatic carriers, with some isolates possessing enterotoxin genes such as sea, seb, and sec. Evidence also suggests potential bidirectional transmission between cats and humans, particularly in close-contact environments. The stability and superantigenic properties of SEs contribute to their role in foodborne illness and immune-mediated conditions. However, most studies focus on gene detection rather than active toxin production, and direct evidence linking feline-associated strains to human disease remains limited. These findings highlight a potential zoonotic risk and emphasize the need for a One Health approach to surveillance and prevention.

Abstract

Batuan Kaler Village in Gianyar, Bali, exhibits close communitarian interactions between the local community, domestic animals, and livestock. However, the absence of valid population demographic data and animal health status mapping often hinders the effectiveness of veterinary intervention programs and sectoral development in rural communities. This community service activity, conducted through the XXXVIII Veterinary Clinical Work (KKV), utilized a door-to-door census survey method across four banjars (traditional neighborhood/community unit in Bali) (Sakah, Dauh Uma, Cangi, and Blahtanah) to collect data on animal populations, dominant clinical complaints, and socio-economic constraints of the residents. The census recorded a total domestic animal population dominated by poultry/chickens (488 heads) and dogs (249 heads), while pig ownership was completely absent (0 heads). The most pervasive clinical complaints across all banjars were ectoparasite-induced skin diseases (pruritus, ticks, and hair loss) alongside low dog sterilization rates. Sectorally, residents faced challenges including rodent pest infestations and weather fluctuations in agriculture, manure accumulation issues in livestock management, as well as capital instability and declining tourist visits in the craft and trade sectors. This community service has successfully established a crucial database for veterinary management in Batuan Kaler Village. Integrated follow-up programs are urgently required, focusing on mass skin disease treatment, dog sterilization, and training on transforming livestock waste into organic compost (eco-farming) to sustain the economic resilience of the local community.

Abstract

Creams are one of the most widely used topical formulations for the treatment of acne because they are easy to apply, comfortable to use, and easy to wash off. Averrhoa bilimbi leaves are known to contain flavonoids and tannins that have potential as antibacterial agents against acne-causing bacteria; however, natural-based formulations generally have poor physical stability. This study aims to determine the effect of varying propylene glycol concentrations on the physical and chemical stability of Averrhoa bilimbi leaf extract cream formulations and to identify the most optimal propylene glycol concentration. This study is an experimental study using three formulations with varying propylene glycol concentrations, namely 8%, 10%, and 12%. Physical properties were evaluated through organoleptic testing, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, adhesion, and stability testing using the freeze-thaw cycling test method for 3 cycles or 6 days. The results showed that all formulations met the requirements for organoleptic testing, homogeneity, and pH. However, only formulation 3 with a 12% propylene glycol concentration met all physical evaluation parameters, including spreadability and adhesion. Formula 3 showed a spreadability value of 5.49 cm before the stability test and 6.10 cm after the stability test, as well as an adhesion value of 4.61 seconds before the stability test and 4.35 seconds after the stability test. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that variations in propylene glycol concentration affect the physical stability of the Averrhoa bilimbi leaf extract cream formulation, and a 12% propylene glycol concentration is the most optimal formula.

Abstract

Vulnus laceratum is a lacerated wound with an irregular shape caused by either sharp or blunt objects that penetrate the skin or underlying muscle. A three-year-old white dog named Snowi, weighing 24 kg, presented with an open wound near the base of the penis, which had become infected after repeated scratching over the past three weeks. Based on the history and observed clinical signs, the dog was diagnosed with vulnus laceratum at the base of the penis, with a favorable prognosis (fausta). Surgical management was performed according to standard wound care principles, including wound cleansing, removal of necrotic or damaged tissue (debridement), and wound closure using sutures. Postoperative treatment included administration of cefotaxime at a dose of 10 mg/kg, cefixime twice daily for seven days, and topical application of iodine to the sutured wound. By day nine, the wound had dried and the sutures were removed. The treatment in this case proved effective, as complete healing was achieved by the ninth day. The owner is advised to provide better care both during the postoperative period and afterward to prevent recurrence of similar lacerated wounds.

Abstract

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease that causes severe pain and compromises cattle welfare. Objective pain assessment is challenging but essential for effective therapeutic management. This study aimed to comprehensively characterize the pain profile in FMD-infected cattle by validating the use of the visual analog scale (VAS) through a multidimensional analysis of pain behavioral manifestations. To ensure robustness, the validation process included inter-rater reliability assessments and a comparison with established pain indicators, addressing concerns about the VAS's reproducibility. This qualitative descriptive study was conducted on 15 FMD-infected cattle in Makassar City and Gowa Regency. Pain intensity was evaluated using the VAS based on direct observation of a series of behavioral parameters. The results indicated heterogeneity in pain intensity across parameters. Locomotor deficits, such as lameness and slowness, as well as agitation (restlessness), consistently correlated with moderate pain levels. Conversely, interactive responses, such as aggression and most postural changes, were identified in the mild pain category. It was concluded that the VAS is a valid and reliable instrument for multidimensional pain assessment in FMD-infected cattle, with mobility and agitation being the most significant markers for the early detection of moderate pain.

Abstract

Avian Influenza (AI), Infectious Bronchitis (IB), and Newcastle Disease (ND) often infect broilers and layers. This study aimed to identify the immunological response of laying hens following vaccination against AI, IB, and ND. Laying hens received a multivalent vaccine containing AI, IB, and ND antigens at 18 and 45 weeks of age. Subsequently, antibody titers were assessed as a measure of the post-vaccination response. Blood samples were collected on days 7, 14, and 21 post – vaccination. Blood samples were collected from the brachial vein of laying hens that had been previously vaccinated. Data will be analyzed descriptively, and comparisons will be made in accordance with existing literature. The variables examined included AI, IB, and ND antibody titers. Results from the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test for ND and AI antibodies demonstrated a notable increase in titers over the observation period. At day 0, the mean antibody titers for ND and AI were 2.5 and 4.6, respectively, suggesting that baseline antibody levels prior to the post-vaccination immune response were optimal. The ELISA IB test results were seropositive in all samples, both before and 21 days after vaccination. This indicates that all chickens already had antibodies against the IB virus. The study concluded that the highest protective antibody titers for AI, ND, and IB vaccines occurred between days 14 and 21 for AI and IB. Meanwhile, for ND, a decline in protection is observed after day 14, attributable to several factors including vaccine efficacy not guaranteeing complete protection, the timing of administration, the vaccine dose and route of administration, human error (particularly with injectable routes), and the specific strain used. Implementing biosecurity measures within poultry houses is crucial to prevent ND transmission.
