Abstract

Japanese shows a complex system of speech levels that reflects the speakers politeness towards the conversation partner, in accordance with Japanese cultural values that uphold politiness and respects. This level includes Sonkeigo (recpectful language), Kenjougo (modest language), Teineigo (polite language), and Futsugo (ordinary language). In addition, Japanese communication styles are influenced by the cultural concepts of Uchi (in-group) and Soto (out-group), which determine the dynamics of social interaction. These principles shape language behavior in various domains of society, including in the educational environment. This research examines the application of thi cultural and linguistic framework in the drama Gokusen by Toya Sato. The interaction between Yamaguchi Kumiko (teacher) and class 3D students illustrates the Uchi-Soto dichotomy, where the teacher is seen as an outsider (Soto) and students as an in-group (Uchi). The use of appropriate levels of speech in this relationship highlights traditional Japanese communication strategies. As reflected in this drama, the integration between language and culture emphasizes the importance of harmony and respect in Japanese society. This analysis shows that the concept of Uchi-Soto and levels of speech not only function as linguistic tools, but also reflect broader social norms

Abstract

This study examines the impression management of the main character, Umaru Doma, in the anime Himouto! Umaru-chan using Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical theory. The research focuses on three aspects behavior, academics, and how Umaru expresses her desires analyzed through two interaction areas: front stage and back stage. In the front stage, Umaru presents herself as an ideal, active, friendly, and accomplished student to meet social expectations, while in the back stage, she reveals a more relaxed and lazy side when at home. This study also explores Japanese cultural concepts such as wa (harmony), ganbaru (perseverance), and amae (emotional dependence) to understand the impression management strategies Umaru employs. The results show that Umaru consciously portrays a specific image in public spaces to gain social acceptance and sympathy, while in private, she freely expresses her true self without social pressure. These findings reflect how individuals may use impression management in daily interactions to achieve personal goals

Abstract

This thesis is titled "Gender injustice against the main character of Arte in the Arte Anime by Kei Ohkubo". This study aims to analyze the form of gender injustice as well as the efforts made in enforcing the existence of women. The method used is a literature study, using the theory of gender injustice by Fakih and the theory of existentialist feminism by Beauvoir. The results of the analysis suggest that gender injustices, such as marginalization, can be countered by upholding individual freedoms to prove that women are capable of working on a par with men. Psychic violence, experienced by the main character, is overcome by rejecting the concept of "liyan". Other forms of injustice, such as subordination and workload, are fought by being a persistent intellectual figure. In addition, gender stereotypes that limit women are also broken through the role of women in social transformation

Abstract

The standard structure of Giver ga Receiver ni camera wo yaru/kureru' follows the view of  Love  regarding Japanese Donatory Verbs.. The structure keeps some rules that Japanese learners rarely observe.  One of the aspects that is rarely seen is the social status of the subject filler Giver, the recipient of Receiver (dative) and Speaker (speaker). These three components have a great influence on the filler of the predicate, yaru or kureru. If the social status of S is inferior to G, while the social relationship between S and R meets  the criteria of uchi in blood or insider relationships, then the embedded verb is kureru. This consideration is the background of this research. Meanwhile, the purpose of this article is to illustrate the form of error in the use of Donatory Verbs sentences. The data collection method was carried out through questionnaires. The questionnaire details are compiled based on cases of incorrect in Indonesian to youngen the analysis of the sentence of acceptance in Japanese. The results of the analysis found that there are quite massive difficulties in the use of verbs that are in harmony with the social relations of G, R, S, as well as the placement of the role of G, R, S and the social status they hold. The analysis of the questionnaire also touched on the interference of the mother tongue structure into Japanese, the difficulty of considering the gradation of the keigo speech act (敬語) according to the view of Love on the rules of Donatory Verbs. A small percentage of respondents used a sentence translation unit with a selection of words or categories that did not match

Abstract

Motivation in achieving self-actualization often appears in literary works and popular media, including the Anime “Hajime no Ippo” by Jyoji Morikawa. The main character, Makunouchi Ippo, goes through a long journey to achieve self-actualization as a boxer, which is influenced by various factors that push him forward. This research aims to analyze how Ippo's motivation develops in his journey using a literary psychology approach and Maslow's (1943) hierarchy of needs theory. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a listening-recording technique, in which the data is analyzed based on dialogues and scenes in the Anime. The results of this study show that the most dominant motivation in Ippo's journey is the drive to achieve self-esteem. This motivation developed from personal experiences, such as the bullying she experienced, as well as support from the environment, such as gym mates, coaches, and family. In addition, Ippo's motivation was further strengthened after watching videos of boxing matches, which inspired him to become stronger and determined to prove himself. Ippo's motivation to become a professional boxer reflects the achievement of self-esteem and self-actualization needs in Maslow's hierarchy, which is key to his psychological journey in reaching his full potential

Abstract

This study investigates the representation of the disaster mitigation concept known as “Tsunami Tendenko,” a form of local wisdom originating from the Sanriku region of Japan. The concept has gained prominence due to its principle that contrasts with the conventional moral teachings of disaster response across Japan, which emphasize mutual aid. In contrast, “Tsunami Tendenko” prioritizes individual self-preservation. This study employs a descriptive-analytical method, using observation and note-taking as data collection techniques. The analysis identifies four core principles of “Tsunami Tendenko” as represented in the picture book Hana Chan no Haya Aruki Haya Aruki by Ube Kyouko: (1) taking personal responsibility for one’s own safety, (2) encouraging others to evacuate, (3) fostering mutual trust, and (4) reducing self-blame among disaster survivors. The study also reveals the pedagogical impact represented in the picture book, namely reducing disaster casualties, fostering disaster awareness and responsiveness, and promoting acceptance of disaster victims. This concept continues to develop as relevant local wisdom in the context of modern-day evacuation and disaster mitigation
