Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of literature integration in English language learning with a sociocognitive approach on the multimodal literacy skills of agricultural students. The research methods used include multimodal literacy tests before and after the intervention for 8 weeks, as well as a questionnaire to collect students' perceptions. Quantitative results showed that before the intervention, there was no significant difference in multimodal literacy skills between the experimental group (mean score 65.4) and the control group (mean score 64.8). However, after the intervention, the average score of the experimental group increased significantly to 85.2, while the control group only experienced a slight increase to 68.5. Inferential statistical analysis confirmed that the difference in score improvement between the two groups was significant (p <0.05), indicating the effectiveness of literature integration in improving multimodal literacy skills. Qualitative results from in-depth interviews with students revealed key themes related to the learning experience, including increased engagement and motivation, improved multimodal literacy skills, and better social interactions in the literature-based learning context. Students from the experimental group reported that literature helped them better understand cultural and historical contexts, improved critical thinking skills, and expanded their understanding of different modes of communication. These findings support the importance of using contextual and interactive learning strategies to enhance the effectiveness of English language learning in agricultural education contexts. This study makes an important contribution to curriculum development and teaching practices in higher education, considering the important role of multimodal literacy in modern education.

Abstract

This research examines Tara Westover's memoir, Educated, through Jack Mezirow's Transformative Learning Theory, which emphasizes critical reflection as a catalyst for profound personal change. The memoir chronicles Westover's journey from an isolated and oppressive upbringing to achieving academic success, illustrating education's role in fostering self-awareness, resilience, and identity transformation. Using qualitative methods, including literature analysis, the study focuses on the stages of transformative learning disorienting dilemma, self-examination, critical reflection, and reintegration as reflected in Westover's narrative. The findings reveal how education challenges ingrained beliefs, enabling individuals to navigate societal constraints and redefine their perspectives. Westover's academic journey, culminating in a doctorate from Cambridge University, underscores the power of education to transcend familial limitations and foster personal growth. This analysis highlights the dual function of education: as a means of acquiring knowledge and a transformative tool for personal empowerment. By linking individual experiences with societal structures, the study contributes to discussions on education's broader implications. Westover’s memoir serves as a compelling testament to the transformative power of education in reshaping identities, fostering adaptability, and enabling individuals to contribute meaningfully to society.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effectiveness of innovative technology-based learning in improving students' communication skills in English learning at SMA Tribhakti Tanggulangin. The background of this study is based on the low level of student engagement and communication skills in conventional learning. The innovative learning implemented integrates technology such as learning applications, interactive videos, and online discussion platforms to create a dynamic and collaborative learning environment. The research method uses a descriptive quantitative design with a quasi-experimental approach, involving 60 grade XI students who are divided into experimental and control groups. The results showed that the experimental group that participated in technology-based learning experienced significant improvements in speaking and listening skills, compared to the control group that used traditional methods. In addition, students in the experimental group reported higher levels of engagement, felt more confident in communicating, and were more motivated in learning English. This study also identified that obstacles such as internet access and devices were still obstacles, although the benefits of using technology were much more dominant. The conclusion of this study confirms that English learning that combines innovative and technological approaches can have a positive impact on improving students' communication skills significantly and enjoyably.

Abstract

In the context of tourism-driven economies such as Bali, English proficiency has become an essential skill for micro-entrepreneurs, especially in culinary sectors targeting international customers. This study explores the potential use of English among kebab sellers in Bali as part of their business development and customer service strategies. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study involved interviews with a newly established kebab vendor whose business is located outside major tourist areas. Although the vendor had not yet interacted with foreign tourists, they expressed strong awareness of the importance of English for promotional and service purposes. Findings reveal three main insights: (1) limited interaction with foreign customers due to location and business age; (2) strong perception of English as a key asset for business expansion and professionalism; and (3) high interest in participating in free English training programs tailored for small business needs. This reflects a gap between motivation and access to practical language support for entrepreneurs in non-tourist zones. The study emphasizes the need for contextual English training that integrates communication strategies, marketing skills, and customer interaction scenarios. It also highlights the importance of early intervention and inclusive language education policies to empower micro-entrepreneurs beyond tourism hotspots. This research contributes to the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) by presenting a unique perspective on language readiness among aspiring entrepreneurs in the informal sector.

Abstract

Accurate pronunciation is fundamental to effective communication. Meanwhile, many EFL learners struggle due to limited exposure and first language interference. This study investigates the effectiveness of two AI-based applications ElsaSpeak and ElevenLabs in improving English pronunciation accuracy among Indonesian vocational students. Employing a comparative descriptive method, 20 first-semester students were divided into two groups based on equal pre-test scores. Each group received three pronunciation practice sessions using one of the tools. Post-test results showed significant improvement in both groups, with ElsaSpeak yielding slightly higher gains due to its real-time, phoneme-level feedback. Learner responses confirmed positive experiences with both tools, although ElsaSpeak was preferred for its interactive features. These findings suggest that AI-assisted pronunciation tools can serve as effective supplements to traditional instruction by offering individualized, flexible learning. The study highlights the value of integrating such technologies into EFL pedagogy to enhance pronunciation development and promote learner autonomy.

Abstract

English plays a crucial role in the educational context of Indonesia, especially in enhancing students’ communication abilities. However, many students, particularly in Islamic boarding schools, often face difficulties in mastering English due to limited practice time, teaching methods, and lack of motivation. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method and was conducted at SMP Plus Aisyah Samawa, involving seventh-grade students. Data were collected through classroom observations, questionnaires distributed to twenty-seven students, and semi-structured interviews with seven selected respondents. The findings revealed that students held very positive perceptions toward ice breaking activities. They considered ice breaking to be enjoyable, motivating, and helpful in reducing anxiety, increasing vocabulary retention, and creating a more engaging classroom atmosphere. Students also reported feeling more confident and enthusiastic in participating during lessons. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that ice breaking activities have a significant positive impact on both the emotional and cognitive aspects of students in English language learning. Abstract

This study investigates the politeness strategies used by Indonesian netizens in TikTok comments directed at public figure Fuji An. As social media becomes a dominant space for public discourse, understanding how politeness and impoliteness are linguistically expressed is essential. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyzed 40 purposively selected comments from one of Fujian’s TikTok videos. The comments were categorized using Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, which includes bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record strategies. The findings show that positive politeness was the most frequently used strategy, indicating strong affective support from followers. However, instances of impoliteness and verbal attacks, particularly those targeting religious aspects and personal identity, were also present. These results suggest that TikTok comment sections represent a complex interactional space where empathy, criticism, and hostility coexist. The study concludes that digital politeness strategies are shaped by cultural proximity, public perception, and platform dynamics. The findings imply the need for greater digital literacy and ethical awareness to foster respectful online communication, particularly toward local public figures in Indonesia.
