Abstract

In the era of digital information, this article will discuss how to be a professional lecturer and its challenges in the shift to Industry 4.0. The method used was qualitative-descriptive. The purpose of this descriptive research is to make a description, description or painting systematically, factually and accurately about the facts, characteristics, and relationship between the phenomena being investigated, while the data sources used as references in this study include literature references source from literature-related to the lecturer profession and learning challenges in digital transformation era. Specifically, the government has determined that the strategies and priorities of national education development. The finding also showed that lectures are a profession that must have innovation and creativity because lectures must be able to provide quality teaching, so as to produce students who are unable to think critically. The use of artificial intelligence (AI), is one of the strategies used in technology. It is one of the innovative initiatives that has great potential to change the way to teach in the era of digital information.

Abstract

Students’ reading habit in Indonesia is still low. Gerakan Literasi Sekolah (GLS) is created by the government to solve this problem. Reading non-learning book in 15 minutes before the lesson begun is one of activities in this movement. Observation, interview, students’ response journal, field note, and video recording were done for data collection to investigate the implementation of GLS in one of state Islamic junior high school in a small city in East Java to find out students’ negotiation to a text for their reading comprehension and to know that the implementation of GLS is effective or not for teaching reading. The result of this descriptive qualitative research shows that the school is in habituation implementation stage of GLS. The students use both of bottom-up and top-down process to negotiate with a text for their reading comprehension. This research also proves that the implementation of GLS is effective as a technique for teaching reading. Keywords: GLS, Teaching Reading, Teaching Technique

Abstract

This study explores the English proficiency levels of vocational university students majoring in Mechanical Engineering, assessed through a TOEIC simulation test. Seventy-four students participated in the study, which used a modified TOEIC test with 18 representative questions due to time constraints and students' unfamiliarity with the full test format. The results indicated a mean score of 53.38 out of 100, with a significant range from 15 to 90, highlighting substantial variability in proficiency levels. The majority of male students scored higher than female students, suggesting potential gender-related differences in language acquisition within this cohort. A positive correlation was found between students' TOEIC scores and their academic performance in Mechanical Engineering courses, underscoring the importance of English proficiency for academic success. The discussion contextualizes these findings within second language acquisition theories and compares them with previous studies, emphasizing the necessity for targeted English language support tailored to vocational students' needs. Practical recommendations include integrating specialized English training into the vocational curriculum, offering supplemental language support, and implementing regular language proficiency assessments. The study's implications for policy and practice highlight the need for enhanced language instruction to improve vocational students' academic and professional outcomes.

Abstract

Examining recorded lectures’ effectiveness to teach grammar in the context of flipped classroom model has not been widely research. Furthermore, this type of teaching has not been frequently used in the research area which applies English for Specific Purpose (ESP) materials that require special treatment in teaching grammar. This study, therefore, aims to uncover the unknown research findings by implementing quasi experimental research by involving two classes in Mechanical Engineering department. Both classes were given pre-test before treatment to ensure the similarity of initial grammar skills and post-test after treatment to know the impact of recorded lectures in flipped classroom model for students in experimental group. Data gained through independent t-test from SPSS indicated that there was a significant impact of the treatment on students’ mastery in grammar proven by the significant value of 0.05 (above 0.05) As this type of teaching has been proven to be effective for teaching grammar especially in the context of ESP, lecturers who teach in the same setting are suggested implement recoded lecturers.

Abstract

Education system should use technology. The domination of technology had influenced in all human aspects especially education. In modern Education, both language learning and technology influence by each other. Many variations of English language teaching and learning activity improve English language skill combined with appropriate teaching tool or media. Mobile assisted language learning as one of sophisticated technological tool in education performs many advantages to teach English language learning for improving students English skills. Moreover, English lecturers prefer to utilize it to teach English for Islamic Studies. This research was qualitative research. It was conducted at Islamic Institute of Riyadlotul Mujahidin Ngabar Ponorogo. The subjects were second semester students of Islamic Religious Education department and this reserach only focused on teaching English for Islamic Studies used Mobile Assisted Language Learning. The data in this research was collected by interview, documentation and observation. The research showed that the implementation of Mobile Assisted Language Learning had given students’ opportunity to understand English for Islamic studies material through several applications in android system. Those applications are U Dictionary, Google, Youtube, Thesaurus,Pdf Reader and Whats app. Mobile Assisted Language Learning support teaching English for Islamic Studies determined from the following indications: firstly, students really enjoyed and were more enthusiastic in learning process. Second, they understood easily about English for Islamic Studies material. Then, younger students prefer a modern style in English language learning. The last, English language communication between teacher and students had been realistically happened. The obstruction was about the cell phone signal. To maximize the use of global digital learning, this article eventually persuades that MALL is implemented for EFL teaching and learning particularly for teaching English for Islamic Studies at Islamic Higher Education.

Abstract

While WhatsApp Messenger has been utilized beyond its primary use as a communication tool, there is only a limited number of studies in pedagogy which highlights the importance of WhatsApp in teaching-learning activities. Therefore, this paper was initiated to present a wide perspective of valuing WhatsApp Messenger mobile app as a strategic learning tool in English Foreign Classes. This article reviews the use of WhatsApp Messenger as a tool to support English foreign language class by outlining its uses. The way WhatsApp Messenger supports English foreign language classes can be comprehended through a series of discussion which also involves teaching language skills—speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Based on the review, the articles also provide advantages and disadvantages of using WhatsApp Messenger in language classroom.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, the flow of cultural, informational, and technological exchanges underscores the importance of mastering foreign languages as a tool for cross-national communication. In Indonesia, proficiency in foreign languages has become increasingly relevant, especially in supporting the development of technological and vocational education. As foreign languages dominate various aspects of life, the rich local culture with its traditional values risks being marginalized. This phenomenon is particularly evident in the education sector, where many students prioritize foreign language proficiency to meet the demands of the global labor market while understanding local socio-cultural values becomes increasingly neglected. This study aims to find strategic solutions to integrate foreign language proficiency without compromising the nation's socio-cultural identity in technological and vocational education. The research method used is a literature review with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection was conducted through web and metadata search applications for research articles. Data analysis followed the Miles & Huberman model, which includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study indicate that the interaction between socio-cultural factors, including foreign language skills, has a significant impact on the development of technological and vocational education in Indonesia. The implications of this study recommend that policymakers give substantial attention to these factors to enhance technological and vocational education rather than hinder it.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of technology on language learning in the 21st century, focusing on how technology is shaping modern pedagogy in language education. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, this research analyzes recent studies from the past five years on the application of technology in language learning. The findings indicate that technology, such as language learning apps, e-learning platforms, and artificial intelligence (AI), has significant benefits in enhancing basic language skills, such as vocabulary and reading comprehension. However, technology has not fully addressed challenges in developing speaking and writing skills, which require social and contextual interaction. Additionally, challenges include the lack of digital training for teachers and the digital divide that affects the quality of language education. Therefore, the integration of technology in language teaching should be accompanied by appropriate pedagogical approaches, professional training for teachers, and improved infrastructure to overcome digital inequalities. This study provides valuable insights for the development of language education policies that effectively incorporate technology.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the forms and purpose of code mixing applied by the English teacher in In Classroom Interactions. This study is descriptive qualitative method in which the data are conversation that has done by the English teacher in teaching and learning process. There are two instruments is used to get data namely recorder and structured interview. Meanwhile techniques of data collection are recording and interview. Data analysis involved three steps, those are data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The result of this study found, 45 forms of word 19 forms of phrase 9 form of hybrid 2 forms of word repetition and 11 forms of clause. Meanwhile, the researcher found 3 purposes of using code mixing those are need feeling motive, more being informative and expressing self-emotion.

Abstract

Due to the arrival of COVID-19 in Indonesia, offline learning shifted to online learning, creating new challenges for both teachers and students. They began using new online platforms for their lessons, including an online meeting platform and WhatsApp groups for sharing information. A qualitative study was conducted by the researcher, who used interviews and documentation to gather data from English teachers at MTs Negeri 2 Kota Kediri. The study involved five teachers as participants. Another research tool used was documentation. The findings showed that ELMA was the main app supporting the learning process, as it allowed for activities like explaining materials, assigning tasks, recording attendance, and assessments. During the pandemic, teachers used ELMA and integrated it with other apps, which proved effective for distance learning. However, despite technology's help in the learning process, the study found that its use was not fully optimized due to issues with network connections and students' comprehension. Nevertheless, teachers were aware of these challenges and implemented strategies to address them, one of which included offering free weekly consultations for students who struggled with lessons. The teachers also applied various strategies to ensure the teaching and learning process ran smoothly
