Abstract

The viral phenomenon of "tumbler tuku" at PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is one example of the dynamics of digital communication in the social media era. This case began with a passenger's complaint posted on social media and then escalated into a communication crisis involving multiple parties. The purpose of this research is to examine this phenomenon from a cyberpragmatic perspective, particularly regarding how context functions to understand the intent of utterances in the digital space. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach by examining utterances on social media, institutional responses, and media coverage. The results indicate that utterances on social media tend to be emotional and judgmental, which can lead to misunderstandings. The virtual context plays a crucial role in rectifying, affirming, clarifying, and underlying the intent of utterances from a cyberpragmatic perspective. Conflicts in the digital public space increase due to misinterpretation of context.

Abstract

Social media has become a space for interaction that allows users to express themselves quickly and openly. This often gives rise to debate, especially when involving communities with different cultural backgrounds, such as the Sea-Blings and Knetz. This study aims to analyze the forms of speech and speech acts that emerge in interactions between these two groups on social media. This study uses a pragmatic approach with a focus on the study of speech and speech acts, along with descriptive quantitative methods. The research data consists of written utterances obtained from social media posts and comment columns. The data are then classified based on the type of speech act (locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary), and the type of illocutionary function (expressive, directive, assertive, and commissive). Furthermore, the data are analyzed quantitatively to determine the frequency and trends of each type of speech act. The results show that expressive and directive speech acts are the most dominant forms in interactions between the Sea-Blings and Knetz. These utterances are generally used to convey emotions, criticism, defense, and affirmation of group attitudes and identities. Differences in cultural background and perspective influence how speakers convey and interpret speech, potentially leading to misunderstandings and verbal conflict. This research is expected to provide insight into language usage patterns on social media and raise user awareness of the importance of using polite, wise, and contextually appropriate language in online communication.

Abstract

The phenomenon of communication on social media often gives rise to various forms of linguistic impoliteness influenced by emotional factors, freedom of expression, and the lack of social control. One case that attracted public attention is the statement made by Dwi Sasetyaningtyas, an alumna and recipient of the LPDP scholarship, which went viral and triggered diverse responses from the public. This study aims to analyze the implicatures, speech acts, and forms of linguistic impoliteness that emerge in online discussions related to the case. The method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach. The data were obtained from posts and comments on social media related to the phenomenon, and then analyzed using a pragmatic framework. The results show that linguistic impoliteness appears in the form of direct accusations, insults, sarcasm, and the use of emotional language. In addition, implicatures were found that imply criticism toward the individuals involved, as well as various types of speech acts, such as expressive, directive, and declarative. These findings indicate that communication on social media not only functions as a means of conveying information but also as a space for expressing opinions that can potentially lead to conflict if not accompanied by an awareness of linguistic ethics.

Abstract

The phenomenon of code-mixing between Indonesian and English has become increasingly prevalent among Generation Z, particularly in social media communication. This study aims to examine the forms, causal factors, and impacts of code-mixing in youth speech, especially the variety known as “Jaksel language.” This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected from social media content such as TikTok and YouTube. Data collection techniques include observation, documentation, and note-taking, while data analysis is conducted through data reduction, classification, and interpretation based on a sociolinguistic framework. The findings reveal that the dominant forms of code-mixing involve the insertion of English elements at the levels of words, phrases, and clauses, with Indonesian remaining the primary language. The factors influencing this phenomenon include bilingualism, the prestige of English, communicative efficiency, and the influence of social media and global culture. Furthermore, code-mixing functions as a means of self-expression and a marker of social identity among urban youth. In terms of impact, code-mixing has positive implications in enriching vocabulary through integration processes, but it also has the potential to cause interference if it affects the structure of the Indonesian language. Socially, this phenomenon can strengthen group solidarity while also creating exclusivity in communication. Therefore, code-mixing is a complex and multidimensional linguistic phenomenon that reflects the dynamic nature of language in a bilingual digital society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze linguistic phenomena, including code-switching, code-mixing, interference, and language integration, in TikTok videos from the account @Sabreensdiary. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques using observation and note-taking methods. The primary data source is a TikTok video uploaded on December 26, 2025, supported by captions and user comments. The findings reveal that code-mixing is the most dominant phenomenon, particularly in the form of English words and phrases inserted into Indonesian (outer code-mixing). Code-switching is also identified in several forms, including metaphorical, intrasentential, and extrasentential switching. Meanwhile, interference is not significantly found, as there are no deviations from Indonesian grammatical rules. Language integration is evident in commonly used words such as vibes, sunset, and headphone. The factors influencing these phenomena include bilingualism, language contact through digital media, social prestige and identity, communicative efficiency and expressiveness, as well as globalization and popular culture. These phenomena have both positive and negative impacts. Positively, they enhance linguistic creativity, strengthen social identity, and expand vocabulary. However, they may also lead to language shift, communication gaps, and the weakening of standard Indonesian usage.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss and identify forms of code-switching and code-mixing, analyze the factors underlying them, and examine the prevalence of these forms in the Instagram content of creator Lege Marbun (@legerigi). The study was conducted using a qualitative descriptive approach with the observe-and-record technique. This analysis identified 12 authentic speech data points from 25 Reels/Stories posts from January to March 2026. The data source came from the Instagram account of Lege Marbun, a Batak diaspora content creator with 83K followers. Data collection involved observation and note-taking; data analysis techniques included data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that code-mixing is the most dominant form with 7 instances (58.3%), compared to code-switching with 5 instances (41.7%). The most common contributing factors are dual ethnic identity and a bilingual diaspora audience. This phenomenon reflects the communication style of the urban Batak youth in the digital age, which is flexible, expressive, and reflects a multilingual identity. These findings align with the sociolinguistic theories of Suwito, Holmes, and Wardhaugh, which emphasize the close relationship between language choice, social context, and identity strategies.

Abstract

This article investigates linguistic phenomena in digital spaces arising as a response to a humanitarian tragedy intersecting with controversial public policy. The primary focus of this research is the analysis of netizen speech acts on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) following the suicide of a fourth-grade elementary student, YBS, in Ngada Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) in January 2026. This tragedy became a national discourse as it was triggered by the victim's inability to purchase stationery, amidst a heated debate regarding the allocation of the IDR 335 trillion Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) budget, which consumes a significant portion of education funds in the 2026 State Budget. Utilizing a critical pragmatic approach, this research aims to identify types of illocutionary acts, their pragmatic functions, and the politeness and impoliteness strategies employed as instruments of social criticism. The research method is qualitative descriptive, using the non-participatory observation technique (SBLC) on 47 netizen utterances. Findings indicate a dominance of expressive (38.3%) and directive (34.0%) speech acts, reflecting an escalation from collective emotion into structured political demands. This study confirms that social media has transformed into a digital arena where linguistic power is exercised to dismantle structural injustice and demand state accountability for fundamental educational rights.

Abstract

This study uses Teun A. van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis model to examine the media framing of President Prabowo Subianto's mediation offer in the Iran-US-Israel conflict in early March 2026. Six news articles from Kompas.com, Tempo.com, and Kumparan.com were analyzed through three dimensions: discourse structure (macro, superstructure, micro), social cognition, and social context. The analysis results show different framing patterns: Kompas.com emphasizes diplomatic balance accompanied by realistic skepticism of American dominance; Tempo.co highlights political pragmatism and doubts about its effectiveness; while Kumparan.com displays strong support from Iran while sharply criticizing that the initiative is unrealistic due to US hegemony. Overall, the media discourse reflects Indonesia's independent, active, and neutral foreign policy, but is influenced by domestic political interests and global power dynamics. This study contributes to the understanding of media framing in geopolitical crisis situations and the development of van Dijk's model in the context of Indonesian digital journalism.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dominant types of illocutionary speech acts found in public comments on social media related to the video of violence by Brimob officers against students in Tual City. This issue is important because the use of excessive force, or police brutality, triggers strong emotional reactions on digital platforms like TikTok. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and Searle's pragmatic theory, this research examines netizen comments collected through documentation and note-taking. The results show that expressive and directive illocutionary speech acts dominate the conversation. Expressive acts serve as a means for shared anger and empathy, while directive acts manifest as public demands for a thorough investigation. These findings suggest that language on social media works not only as a communication tool but also as a method of social control and mass mobilization that pressures law enforcement to uphold accountability and professionalism.
