Abstract

Textbooks significantly influence student learning, shaping values, beliefs, and cultural perspectives. They convey gender roles, social norms, and biases, making it crucial to create gender-neutral materials. This requires a thorough review of existing textbooks to ensure they are free from gender bias. The purpose of this study is to examine five specific aspects of selected previous research: gender representation in language and terminology, visual representation, representation of professional roles, occupations and jobs, leisure activities and play, as well as cultural and regional differences in gender portrayal in textbooks. A comprehensive strategy was employed to search and identify research papers from Web of Science, Scopus, Springer Link, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and ERIC. The selected papers span from 2007 to 2024. From 358 results, 68 publications representing 45 selected papers were analyzed and discussed, investigating stereotypes and gender bias in English textbooks at the school level. The findings reveal that illustrations are dominated by male figures, often in active leadership roles, while females are underrepresented or shown in passive roles. Boys are depicted in adventurous activities, whereas girls are portrayed in domestic settings, with textbooks consistently minimizing women’s achievements across various cultures and regions. This study contributes to the understanding of gender bias in textbooks, highlights the unequal representation of male and female roles, and provides a foundation for developing more inclusive and equitable educational policies in shaping children’s social perceptions from an early age.

Abstract

Indonesia continues to face structural gender discrimination, encompassing economic, political, and social inequalities that limit women’s empowerment. Although UN Women Indonesia has initiated policies and programs, their effectiveness is constrained by patriarchal norms, unequal resource distribution, and limited access in remote areas, resulting in suboptimal gender transformation. This study analyzes the role of UN Women Indonesia in empowering women from a Marxist Feminist perspective, highlighting violence reporting technologies (AI Chatbots, DELILA) and strategic collaboration with non-state actors. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, focusing on policy advocacy, public education, and cross-actor collaboration, with data validity strengthened through triangulation of social media, official websites, and academic literature. The findings indicate that UN Women Indonesia promotes women’s empowerment and addresses gender-based violence through advocacy, social programs, cross-sector collaboration, and technology. From a Marxist Feminist perspective, women’s empowerment must be understood within the context of economic structures, class relations, and reproductive labor, requiring the integration of advocacy, community education, and structural policies to achieve substantial and sustainable gender equality. The results underscore the need for integrative, technology-based, and inclusive women’s empowerment policies that address resource redistribution, reproductive labor, and male engagement to effectively reduce patriarchal domination in Indonesia.

Abstract

Domestic violence against women in Birnin Kebbi remains a persistent social problem, reflecting complex dynamics shaped by power imbalances, patriarchal norms, and family structures. Acts of physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, and economic abuse not only harm victims but also undermine social well-being, indicating the urgent need for context-specific preventive strategies and empowerment interventions. This study aims to examine the patterns, causes, and experiences of survivors of domestic violence in Birnin Kebbi, raise public awareness, and promote women’s empowerment, equality, and anti-violence norms. A quantitative survey design with multi-stage sampling was employed, collecting data from 259 married women across diverse wards, residential clusters, streets, and households. Structured questionnaires captured experiences of domestic violence systematically, ensuring reliability, representativeness, cultural appropriateness, and confidentiality. Domestic violence in Birnin Kebbi Metropolis is shaped by high prevalence of physical, emotional, verbal, and economic abuse, social and cultural norms legitimizing male dominance, and structural factors like low education and women’s economic dependency. These dynamics perpetuate power imbalances and multidimensional impacts on women. Effective prevention requires comprehensive interventions targeting behavior, socio-cultural norms, legal awareness, and women’s empowerment. The study implies that Domestic violence prevention must integrate legal, social, and economic strategies, including gender-norm transformation, education access, vocational training, and women’s empowerment, to address structural vulnerabilities, reduce abuse, and effectively disrupt cycles of domestic violence.

Abstract

The research problem addresses how gender norms are reflected in pesantren curricula, where analysis of kitab kuning and teaching materials reveals the reproduction of patriarchy: men are positioned as primary authorities, while women’s roles are confined to domestic spheres, influencing pedagogical practices and the formation of students’ habitus. This study aims to identify hidden gender norms in pesantren education, exploring how materials, teacher–student interactions, and organizational structures reproduce, construct, and are challenged by both female and male actors. Employing a critical ethnographic and case study approach, data were collected from curriculum documents, kitab kuning, and interviews with students and teachers across three pesantren in East Java. Data analysis utilized Critical Discourse Analysis and thematic approaches, supported by triangulation, to uncover the reproduction and negotiation of patriarchal norms. This study shows that the pesantren curriculum in Indonesia reproduces patriarchal norms through texts, pedagogical practices, teacher-student relationships, and institutional structures. Resistance emerges from female students and progressive educators through reinterpretation of texts, critical discussion, and alternative practices. Segregation of learning spaces reinforces patriarchy. Potential micro-transformations, however, require sustained policy support, teacher training, and gender-responsive curricula. The implications of the study emphasize the need for reforming the pesantren curriculum to be gender-responsive, training teachers for equality, and institutional policies that support women's participation. These steps are important to change patriarchal structures and encourage inclusive educational transformation.

Abstract

The reproduction of gender-based symbolic violence in the Kediri ikat weaving industry occurs through seniority hierarchies, cultural norms, and gendered division of labor, which normalize obedience, limit women's creative autonomy, and restrict their access to training, innovation, and decision-making. This study aims to analyze how interactions among female actors in the Kediri ikat weaving industry reproduce gender-based symbolic violence through intergenerational mechanisms, skill transmission, cultural norms, and pedagogical practices that reinforce power hierarchies. This study uses a qualitative-critical approach with an intrinsic case study design in three weaving houses in Kediri. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, analyzed thematically to explore the reproduction of gender-based symbolic violence through habitus, doxa, and symbolic capital. This study shows that symbolic violence in the Kediri ikat weaving industry is reproduced through relational mechanisms, social surveillance, and the internalization of cultural norms. Habitus, doxa, and intergenerational authority reinforce seniority while limiting the creativity and autonomy of junior artisans. Javanese social norms and economic vulnerability moderate these processes, resulting in the internalization of domination, hierarchical stability, and a cycle of intergenerational power reproduction. The findings highlight the need for community-based interventions, such as participatory training, cross-generational mentoring, and transparent wage schemes, to challenge symbolic domination while preserving artisans’ creativity, autonomy, and the sustainability of ikat weaving traditions.

Abstract

This study addresses the problem of the low and uneven empowerment of female teachers in utilizing digital competencies and integrating AI in Islamic schools in Southern Pakistan. Limited access, pedagogical readiness, institutional support, and gender disparities potentially hinder teaching effectiveness and learning quality. The study aims to analyze the effects of digital competence, AI usage, and informal digital learning on the teaching effectiveness of female teachers, as well as the relationship between digital competence and AI use in Islamic secondary schools in Southern Pakistan. Employing a quantitative design, the study surveyed 450 female teachers from Islamic secondary schools in Southern Pakistan. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, validity and reliability tests, and multiple linear regression to examine the effects of digital competence, AI, and informal digital learning on teaching effectiveness. The findings conclude that the empowerment effectiveness of female teachers is more strongly influenced by basic digital competence and informal digital learning than by AI adoption. Regional differences highlight the role of institutional context and social support. Digital competence has a direct impact, informal learning acts as a reinforcing factor, while AI remains insignificant due to limited pedagogical integration and insufficient policy support. This study contributes by emphasizing the importance of foundational digital competence and informal learning as key pillars of female teacher empowerment, while critically questioning assumptions about the automatic effectiveness of AI in Islamic education contexts.

Abstract

Historical record showed the number of woman of companions of prophet who memorize Al-Qur'an. Historically, however, the tradition of giving chance to women to memorize Al-Qur'an did not continue in the next periods. Memorizing Al-Qur'an was claimed only for men. It can be seen that there is no woman perawi in Al-Qur'an in transmission system. In Indonesia, for instance, the chain of sanadlima figures of Al-qur'an memorizers become the main reference and has a role in the spread of tahfizul Qur'an that does not mention any of the female characters included in the chain. This study employs quantitative research using field research through feminist approach. Data is presented in verbal not numbers. The use of feminist approach was caused the lack of marginalization of women role in transmission system of tahfiz Al-qur'an which cannot release from unstable gender. The following are the result of the study. First, there is phenomenon of woman marginalization in Al-qur'an transmission system although man dominates it. In reality, Nyaiand Ustałzah who have pondok pesantren tahfiz listen called menyemak and educate tahfiz students. After they finish reciting Al-qur'an and memorizing it, Kyai will give the certificate. Second, the factors underlying the marginalization of al-Qur an transmission system states as follow. First, theologically, man is imam and woman is makmum. Moreover, since woman get menstruation, the religious experience became imperfect and less opportunity to dedicate in public. Sociologically and naturally, man memorizes faster than woman and he has more chance to join khataman and seaman. Third, the implementation of gender equality in tahfiz al-Qur'an culture has not been conducted yet.

Nowadays the farmers in Indonesia alienates from the profession sociologically and anthropologically. It is proved that they do not want to pass their profession to their grandchildren; moreover, the farmers are not proud of their own product. Abstract
