Abstract

Textbooks significantly influence student learning, shaping values, beliefs, and cultural perspectives. They convey gender roles, social norms, and biases, making it crucial to create gender-neutral materials. This requires a thorough review of existing textbooks to ensure they are free from gender bias. The purpose of this study is to examine five specific aspects of selected previous research: gender representation in language and terminology, visual representation, representation of professional roles, occupations and jobs, leisure activities and play, as well as cultural and regional differences in gender portrayal in textbooks. A comprehensive strategy was employed to search and identify research papers from Web of Science, Scopus, Springer Link, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and ERIC. The selected papers span from 2007 to 2024. From 358 results, 68 publications representing 45 selected papers were analyzed and discussed, investigating stereotypes and gender bias in English textbooks at the school level. The findings reveal that illustrations are dominated by male figures, often in active leadership roles, while females are underrepresented or shown in passive roles. Boys are depicted in adventurous activities, whereas girls are portrayed in domestic settings, with textbooks consistently minimizing women’s achievements across various cultures and regions. This study contributes to the understanding of gender bias in textbooks, highlights the unequal representation of male and female roles, and provides a foundation for developing more inclusive and equitable educational policies in shaping children’s social perceptions from an early age.

Abstract

Indonesia continues to face structural gender discrimination that limits women’s empowerment, while United Nations (UN) Women programs are constrained by patriarchal norms, unequal resource distribution, and limited access in remote areas. The aim of this study is to analyze the role of UN Women Indonesia in advancing gender equality through advocacy, national campaigns, economic empowerment, and technological innovation, as well as to evaluate the alignment of its programs with Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the global gender agenda. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, focusing on policy advocacy, public education, and multi-actor collaboration, while data validity was strengthened through triangulation of social media, official websites, and academic literature. The findings show that: (1) UN Women Indonesia implements three pillars and three strategic functions, although field-level challenges remain; (2) multi-level programs reach 88 cities across 18 provinces, but local sustainability and impact measurement remain weak; and (3) women’s political participation is still at 22%, and Indonesia’s position in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) remains suboptimal, indicating the need for stronger and sustained cross-sector collaboration. This study concludes that UN Women Indonesia plays a strategic role in reaching 88 cities; however, substantive gender equality has not been achieved due to patriarchy, class inequality, and unequal access to services. The study contributes by integrating Marxist feminist perspectives and evaluating technological innovation as a form of structural transformation, while emphasizing resource redistribution and men’s engagement as essential for substantive gender equality.

Abstract

Domestic violence against women in Birnin Kebbi remains a persistent social problem, reflecting complex dynamics shaped by power imbalances, patriarchal norms, and family structures. Acts of physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, and economic violence not only harm victims but also undermine social well-being, indicating an urgent need for context-sensitive prevention strategies and empowerment-based interventions. The objective of this study is to analyze the prevalence, forms, and women’s perceptions of domestic violence in Birnin Kebbi LGA, while also exploring the socio-demographic, economic, and cultural factors that influence vulnerability to violence. This research employs a quantitative survey involving 259 married women in Birnin Kebbi, combining multi-stage random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and comparative methods. Validity, reliability, and confidentiality were ensured throughout the research process. The findings indicate a very high prevalence of domestic violence in Birnin Kebbi Metropolis (61.83%), with physical violence (25.1%) and economic violence (23.72%) being the most dominant forms. Cultural normalization is evident, as 41.99% of respondents perceive wife beating as a form of discipline and uphold the belief in the husband's absolute sexual rights. Low levels of education and women's economic dependency further exacerbate victims' vulnerability. This study concludes that domestic violence in Birnin Kebbi is systemic and multidimensional, rooted in power imbalances, patriarchy, and socioeconomic inequalities that perpetuate cycles of violence. This study contributes to strengthening domestic violence theory by identifying education and economic dependency as mediating mechanisms, while also proposing multidimensional interventions.

Abstract

Pesantren in Indonesia maintain traditional gender structures through formal and non-formal curricula, reproducing male dominance, limiting female participation, and reinforcing patriarchal hierarchies amid rapid social change. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of gender power reproduction and contestation in three pesantren in East Java through a critical ethnographic approach, tracing layered patriarchy and symbolic agency within pedagogical practices and the pesantren curriculum. This study employed a critical ethnographic approach with a case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 informants and analyses of curriculum documents. Data analysis applied Carspecken’s critical ethnographic framework, supported by source triangulation, theoretical triangulation, and ideological critique. The findings revealed four main issues: (1) pesantren curricula reproduce gender inequality through patriarchal roles and vertical power relations; (2) resistance emerges through progressive female teachers, critical students, and informal learning groups; (3) gender-responsive curricula are hindered by monolithic religious content, patriarchal structures, and limited teacher competence; and (4) minimal representation of female Islamic scholars limits students’ recognition of women as religious role models. The study demonstrates that pesantren reproduce patriarchy through curricula, institutional structures, and symbolic representations, while resistance from female teachers and students remains largely symbolic due to the absence of sustainable structural reform. This study contributes to expanding the concept of patriarchal habitus and proposes a pesantren patriarchy contestation model through curriculum reform, critical pedagogy, inclusive policies, and strengthening women’s participation toward sustainable structural transformation.

Abstract

Gender-based symbolic violence in weaving industries is reproduced through informal work systems, wage disparities, and age hierarchies normalized by local culture, producing inequalities perceived as natural in informal labor contexts. This study aims to analyze symbolic violence in the Kediri ikat weaving industry across three domains working hours, wage structures, and age disparities that reproduce domination, inequality, and worker compliance. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design in three weaving centers in Kediri, involving 12 participants. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation, and were analyzed thematically with triangulation for validation. This study identifies three forms of symbolic violence: (1) working-time exploitation through the putting-out system, subtle threats, rights removal, and dominant habitus; (2) wage inequality through gender-based differentiation, devaluation of women’s labor, and elimination of bonuses; and (3) age-based inequality through uniform wages, internalized resignation among elderly workers, and bonus allocation based on proximity to power structures. This study concludes that symbolic violence in working hours, wages, and age within the Kediri weaving industry is naturalized as normal practice, thereby sustaining structural inequalities that persist without resistance or critical awareness. This study contributes to the extension of Bourdieu’s theory by revealing the reproduction of symbolic violence in weaving labor, and offers practical implications in the form of wage transparency, recognition of skills equality, and fair bonus distribution.

Abstract

Female teachers in Islamic schools in Southern Punjab, Pakistan face unequal digital access, minimal Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration, and stark variations in digital competence. These conditions undermine teaching effectiveness and professional empowerment, with extreme regional disparities that cannot be ignored. This study analyzes regional differences in digital technology utilization, AI adoption, and informal digital learning, as well as how variations in access, digital competency, and institutional support influence teaching effectiveness among female teachers in Islamic secondary schools. Using a quantitative approach, the study examined the effects of digital competency, AI use, and informal digital learning on teaching effectiveness with 450 valid and reliable respondents, employing multiple regression analysis. The findings indicate that the empowerment of female teachers in Southern Pakistan varies across districts. First, female teachers’ contributions to instructional tasks differ regionally. Second, workload distribution and technology adoption also vary. Third, female teachers demonstrate strong digital competence and actively engage in informal learning; however, technology adoption is influenced by regional contexts. The study concludes that the empowerment of female teachers through digital competence and AI in Southern Pakistan is shaped by regional contexts. Variations in contributions across districts indicate a dependence on local ecosystems and adaptive capacity, rather than merely access to technology. This study contributes to highlighting the importance of institutional support, revealing structural inequalities, and emphasizing the role of informal learning over AI adoption in empowering female teachers.

Abstract

Historical record showed the number of woman of companions of prophet who memorize Al-Qur'an. Historically, however, the tradition of giving chance to women to memorize Al-Qur'an did not continue in the next periods. Memorizing Al-Qur'an was claimed only for men. It can be seen that there is no woman perawi in Al-Qur'an in transmission system. In Indonesia, for instance, the chain of sanadlima figures of Al-qur'an memorizers become the main reference and has a role in the spread of tahfizul Qur'an that does not mention any of the female characters included in the chain. This study employs quantitative research using field research through feminist approach. Data is presented in verbal not numbers. The use of feminist approach was caused the lack of marginalization of women role in transmission system of tahfiz Al-qur'an which cannot release from unstable gender. The following are the result of the study. First, there is phenomenon of woman marginalization in Al-qur'an transmission system although man dominates it. In reality, Nyaiand Ustałzah who have pondok pesantren tahfiz listen called menyemak and educate tahfiz students. After they finish reciting Al-qur'an and memorizing it, Kyai will give the certificate. Second, the factors underlying the marginalization of al-Qur an transmission system states as follow. First, theologically, man is imam and woman is makmum. Moreover, since woman get menstruation, the religious experience became imperfect and less opportunity to dedicate in public. Sociologically and naturally, man memorizes faster than woman and he has more chance to join khataman and seaman. Third, the implementation of gender equality in tahfiz al-Qur'an culture has not been conducted yet.

Abstract

Nowadays the farmers in Indonesia alienates from the profession sociologically and anthropologically. It is proved that they do not want to pass their profession to their grandchildren; moreover, the farmers are not proud of their own product. They consume rice on the market (import) without considering quality and health impact as the innate of the product. They do not concern about synthetic rice in the market. The process of harvest is done by the buyers itself. While for their daily need, they have to buy by retail in the shops. Abstract
