Abstract

English-origin loanwords in Inuktitut are integrated morphologically. As an example, the Inuktitut word guulu, from English “gold”, can undergo affixation with the bound morphemes siuq, meaning “to search for”, and vik, denoting a place where an action takes place, to create the word guulusiurvik, meaning “gold mine”, then attach to grammatical markers that indicate the function of the new word within the sentence. This paper investigates how and why these loanwords are morphologically integrated, as well as the variation observed in this integration. The corpus used for this investigation was The Nunavut Hansard Inuktitut-English Parallel Corpus 2.0, containing transcripts of all the proceedings of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from April 1999 to November 2007, excluding 2003. Within the corpus, the following selection of English-origin loanwords was assessed: paper, company, license, cigarette, tobacco, cheque, skidoo, gold, bus, and coffee. It is suggested that an established morphological framework for integrating loanwords in Inuktitut stems out of necessity due to the typological differences between Inuktitut and English, however individual deviations arise from liberties taken by bilingual speakers in their speech when drawing on both Inuktitut and English grammatical and morphological systems while using an English-origin loanword. These findings are relevant to the linguistic documentation of Inuktitut and shed light on the language contact situation between the Indigenous language Inuktitut and the settler language English.

Abstract

One common dilemma in the Filipino language is the poor spelling skills among students. This is reflected in their written outputs and even posts in social media. Good spelling of words in a language is a manifestation of linguistic familiarization and even mastering its vocabularies. This action research study explored the spelling gaps among high school students. A primary goal is to find out the spelling proficiency problem as evidence of claimed poor spelling skill and an intervention is applied. A quasi-experimental method was used in this study. Pre-test and post-test were all administered to two groups of respondents. A word-paragraph discrimination strategy (WPDS) was used as an intervention for the experimental group. The basis for the standard spelling and rules was anchored from the Orthography of Filipino released by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF). The results revealed that in the pre-test, both groups gained poor results which support the observed poor spelling proficiency of the students. Meanwhile, the result in the post-test revealed a big difference for both groups. The control group did not meet significant progress while the experimental group had gained excellent results which signifies great improvement. The intervention used is proven effective and can help in improving the spelling proficiency of the students in Filipino. Strategy such as WPDS promotes a metalinguistic awareness of maintaining the standard of a language, consonantly, acclimating students in the conventions of spelling and vocabularies.

Abstract

Reading is very important for students’ school study, especially their language learning. Some students, especially those in primary schools, have various reading problems all over the world and Brunei is not an exception. However, this problem has not caused enough attention in Brunei’s academic research. This paper is such an effort to explore the causes contributing to reading comprehension deficits in primary school students in Brunei from teachers’ perspectives. The research is based on survey responses from English language teachers in primary schools, who highlight several concerns: limited time for reading-focused lessons, a significant gap between reading and comprehension skills, insufficient reading resources, and a lack of parental support. The findings show that although reading programmes are implemented in schools, they may not be sufficient to bridge the reading and comprehension gap without proper support. This paper concludes with recommendations to improve reading comprehension in schools.

Abstract

The Current Vitality of the Kedayan Language in Brunei Darussalam Abstract The Kedayan language is a minority language spoken by the Kedayan community in Brunei Darussalam. However, its usage has been in steady decline, particularly among the younger generation who tend to use Brunei Malay or English in daily communication. Previous studies by Martin (1995) estimated the language’s vitality was at level 3.0, while Noor-Azam (2016) later suggested a further decline to level 2.0. However, neither study explicitly stated the framework used, nor did they include empirical data to support their conclusions. Therefore, this study aims to assess the current vitality level of the Kedayan language using a structured questionnaire distributed among the Kedayan speakers in Brunei Darussalam. The questionnaire was designed based on two major frameworks: the UNESCO Language Vitality and Endangerment (LVE) scale and the Expanded Graded Intergenerational Disruption Scale (EGIDS). The data were analysed descriptively to identify patterns of language use, speaker attitudes, and community perceptions regarding the maintenance of their heritage language. Findings indicate that the Kedayan language currently stands at level 3.0 (Definitely Endangered) according to UNESCO, and between level 6b and 7 (Threatened/Shifting) on the EGIDS scale. This language is no longer being naturally transmitted to younger generations, and its use is increasingly limited in daily contexts. This study also identifies several key factors contributing to the language’s decline and proposes several practical strategies for the revitalization and long-term preservation of Kedayan.

Abstract

The emergence of large language models (LLMs) like Catgut has sparked both excitement and anxiety in the translation field. This literature review critically examines how generative AI is reshaping professional translation and translator education in the post-LLM era. Early studies showed that ChatGPT could produce translations between major languages with quality on par with neural machine translation, fueling hopes for productivity gains. However, trust in generative AI among translators remains limited. Surveys indicate that practitioners adopt tools like ChatGPT cautiously, primarily for ancillary tasks such as summarisation or drafting ideas. Key concerns, including data privacy, confidentiality, output accuracy, and the threat of job displacement, undermine translators’ trust in AI systems. We situate these concerns within technology acceptance models (TAM2) and AI trust frameworks, highlighting how perceived usefulness, reliability, and transparency shape adoption. At the same time, generative AI is transforming translation workflows: translators’ roles are evolving toward post-editing and quality control, raising questions of professional identity and autonomy. In translator education, recent experiments integrating ChatGPT show improved student performance and confidence, provided that pedagogical approaches emphasise critical AI literacy and post-editing skills. This review synthesises theoretical and empirical insights from 2023 to 2025 to present a balanced perspective on generative AI in translation. We argue that a human-centric integration of GenAI, one that builds translator trust, addresses ethical/legal risks, and nurtures new competencies, will be essential for harnessing these technologies’ benefits without undermining professional standards.
