Abstract

The Current Vitality of the Kedayan Language in Brunei Darussalam Abstract The Kedayan language is a minority language spoken by the Kedayan community in Brunei Darussalam. However, its usage has been in steady decline, particularly among the younger generation who tend to use Brunei Malay or English in daily communication. Previous studies by Martin (1995) estimated the language’s vitality was at level 3.0, while Noor-Azam (2016) later suggested a further decline to level 2.0. However, neither study explicitly stated the framework used, nor did they include empirical data to support their conclusions. Therefore, this study aims to assess the current vitality level of the Kedayan language using a structured questionnaire distributed among the Kedayan speakers in Brunei Darussalam. The questionnaire was designed based on two major frameworks: the UNESCO Language Vitality and Endangerment (LVE) scale and the Expanded Graded Intergenerational Disruption Scale (EGIDS). The data were analysed descriptively to identify patterns of language use, speaker attitudes, and community perceptions regarding the maintenance of their heritage language. Findings indicate that the Kedayan language currently stands at level 3.0 (Definitely Endangered) according to UNESCO, and between level 6b and 7 (Threatened/Shifting) on the EGIDS scale. This language is no longer being naturally transmitted to younger generations, and its use is increasingly limited in daily contexts. This study also identifies several key factors contributing to the language’s decline and proposes several practical strategies for the revitalization and long-term preservation of Kedayan.

Abstract

The emergence of large language models (LLMs) like Catgut has sparked both excitement and anxiety in the translation field. This literature review critically examines how generative AI is reshaping professional translation and translator education in the post-LLM era. Early studies showed that ChatGPT could produce translations between major languages with quality on par with neural machine translation, fueling hopes for productivity gains. However, trust in generative AI among translators remains limited. Surveys indicate that practitioners adopt tools like ChatGPT cautiously, primarily for ancillary tasks such as summarisation or drafting ideas. Key concerns, including data privacy, confidentiality, output accuracy, and the threat of job displacement, undermine translators’ trust in AI systems. We situate these concerns within technology acceptance models (TAM2) and AI trust frameworks, highlighting how perceived usefulness, reliability, and transparency shape adoption. At the same time, generative AI is transforming translation workflows: translators’ roles are evolving toward post-editing and quality control, raising questions of professional identity and autonomy. In translator education, recent experiments integrating ChatGPT show improved student performance and confidence, provided that pedagogical approaches emphasise critical AI literacy and post-editing skills. This review synthesises theoretical and empirical insights from 2023 to 2025 to present a balanced perspective on generative AI in translation. We argue that a human-centric integration of GenAI, one that builds translator trust, addresses ethical/legal risks, and nurtures new competencies, will be essential for harnessing these technologies’ benefits without undermining professional standards.

Analysis of the Application of Tapsile Customary Values in Inclusive Education Policy within the Sasak Community Abstract This study aims to analyze the application of Tapsile customary values in supporting the formulation of inclusive education policies in the Sasak regency, Lombok. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, this research explores how Tapsile customary values can be integrated into inclusive education policymaking practices, as well as the challenges and opportunities that arise in the process. The findings show that Tapsile values, which emphasize collectivity, togetherness, and mutual cooperation, have strong potential to strengthen community support for inclusive education. In addition, the integration of these customary values has been shown to increase parental and community involvement in education, while also reducing stigma toward students with special needs. However, the implementation of this policy faces structural obstacles, including limited resources and cultural resistance to change. This study highlights the importance of collaborative strategies involving local stakeholders in the development of more inclusive and sustainable education policies. Therefore, the findings make a significant contribution to understanding how local values can play a role in improving the effectiveness of inclusive education policies in Indonesia.

Abstract

Trends in Receptive and Expressive Language Studies in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Bibliometric Analysis Abstract This study aims to analyse the trends in research on receptive and expressive language in Autism Spectrum Disorder (hereafter ASD) over the past decade (2014–2024). Receptive language refers to an individual’s ability to comprehend verbal communication, whereas expressive language involves the ability to convey ideas and information verbally. Individuals with ASD often experience challenges in both aspects of language, which in turn affect their communication development and social interaction. Employing a bibliometric analysis approach, particularly through the use of the VOSviewer application, this study analyses data extracted from the Scopus database to identify key research themes, document types, publication years, publication output, authorship patterns, publication venues, as well as networks of collaboration among researchers and institutions. The findings reveal that a total of 726 articles were identified in the Scopus database. This number indicates a significant increase in publications on “Receptive and Expressive Language in ASD” beginning in 2019 and continuing through 2024. Boston University emerges as the leading contributor in terms of publication output compared to other higher education institutions. In addition, prominent scholars such as Tager-Flusberg and Kasari have played a pivotal role in advancing scholarly discourse in this field. The keywords “Autism Spectrum Disorder,” “Receptive Language,” and “Expressive Language” are identified as the most frequently occurring keywords in the Scopus-indexed publications. This study provides not only an overview of the trends and developments in research on receptive and expressive language in ASD, but also highlights their interconnections within a broader scholarly network, including thematic focus, types of publications, research topics, and publication outlets. Abstract

This study investigates the indigeneity of the seven tribes of Bukidnon province through the Kaamulan Festival 2025. The festive celebration brings not only entertainment but also an exploration to know about the indigenous people and their culture. To carrried out the study, the researcher employed the ethnographic research method to describe the observed activities. A casual interview was done to few locals encountered. The immersion involved the use of field notes, cameras, and audio/video records. The findings discovered the participation from the seven tribes gathering in Malaybalay City is equally given importance in the celebration. Their presence through showcasing their practices, rituals, dances, and songs through performances helped to understand the Kaamulan festival. The festival is comprised of various events and exhibitions signifying unity. Primarily, the highlights of the Kaamulan is centered to ‘piniliyapan’, ‘pamalabag’, ‘pangampo’, etc. in branding its event. Authentic experience is engrained in the performances due to the real members of the indigenous people. They are performing their usual daily activities back home in their village. However, the authenticity of few and well-choreographed movements might eradicate the original and naturalness of particular cultural performance. This implies a delimma on authenticity. Hence to explore this, it is recommended to fully validate movements and actions to the people themselves. Their authority entails respect and establishing orientation to the multiple stakeholders who organize the Kaamulan.

Abstract

Ayoreo, a Zamucoan language of the Gran Chaco, lacks a formal word class for articles, presenting a significant challenge for understanding how universal functional domains of reference are realized in languages with limited descriptions. This research addresses a notable lacuna in the literature regarding a systematic analysis of the grammatical encoding of definiteness in Ayoreo. The primary objective is to characterize the diverse morphosyntactic and discursive mechanisms—including nominal suffixes, possessive prefixes, and demonstratives—that manage identifiability, familiarity, and uniqueness. Employing a mixed onomasiological and semasiological approach, the study analyzes a first-hand corpus collected between 2011 and 2022, supplemented by secondary sources and controlled elicitation. Previous studies reveal a specialized triple nominal marking system: the "full form" serves as the primary vehicle for definite reference, while the "indeterminate form" marks referential but non-specific entities. Additionally, a complex three-degree demonstrative system and possessive prefixes provide essential situational, anaphoric, and associative anchoring. Semantic mapping confirms that proper names and personal pronouns inherently encode uniqueness and familiarity. The study shows that although Ayoreo lacks independent articles, its robust suffixal and pronominal strategies satisfy cross-linguistic criteria for article-like functions. These results contribute essential data to the description of Chaco languages and facilitate broader typological comparisons of referential systems, suggesting that definiteness can be effectively realized through fusional morphology rather than independent word classes.

Abstract

Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) is widely recognized as an important factor contributing to students’ academic success, particularly in online and technology-enhanced learning environments. This study examined the role of demographic factors in students’ use of SRL strategies in higher education. A quantitative survey design was employed involving 236 university students from public and private universities on Lombok Island, Indonesia. Data were collected using the Indonesian adaptation of the Online SRL Questionnaire (OSLQ). Independent-samples t-tests and one-way analyses of variance (ANOVA) were conducted to examine differences in SRL strategies based on gender, age group, field of specialization, and year level. The findings revealed no statistically significant differences in SRL strategies between male and female students, t(94.41) = 0.55, p = .587. Similarly, no significant differences were found across age groups, F(3, 232) = 2.36, p = .073, fields of specialization, F(4, 231) = 1.11, p = .352, or year levels, F(2, 233) = 2.63, p = .075. The effect sizes for all analyses were small, indicating that demographic characteristics explained little variation in students’ SRL strategies. The findings suggest that SRL may be influenced more by psychological, instructional, and environmental factors than by demographic characteristics. Implications for higher education practice and future research are discussed.

Abstract

The Baram–Tinjar region of northern Sarawak is among Borneo's most linguistically diverse areas, yet it remains severely under-documented in comparative linguistics, despite sporadic scholarly attention since the mid-nineteenth century. This study explores how reflexive, ethnographically grounded fieldwork practices influence the quality, reliability, and comparative value of phonological and lexical data collected from severely underdocumented minority languages. The data presented from doctoral fieldwork conducted among minority languages in north Sarawak, including Narum, Kayan, Kiput, Miriek, Berawan, Bakong, and Tireng, documenting phonological systems, lexical inventories, and narrative data through ethnographic engagement. Framed as a comparative-historical linguistic study, the article examines fieldwork methodology, researcher positionality, relationship-building, and the social conditions of data collection as variables that directly affect data quality and historical-linguistic findings. Findings show that sustained, relationship-based fieldwork (rather than single-visit elicitation) yields more naturalistic and reliable comparative data, and that researcher reflexivity functions as a methodological control, not merely an ethical disclosure. Building on these findings, the study discusses how the resulting documentation can also support community-oriented revitalisation outputs, including pedagogical materials and local archives, as applications of documentation rather than the study's primary research aim. Overall, the study demonstrates that integrating comparative linguistics with reflexive fieldwork yields more defensible historical-linguistic data and generates practical resources for the documented communities.
