Abstract

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, which may lead to disability and death. Stroke prevention behavior among hypertensive patients is influenced by several factors, including knowledge and self-efficacy; adequate knowledge of stroke and its risk factors increases patients’ awareness of preventive action, while high self-efficacy strengthens patients’ confidence to consistently practice a healthy lifestyle. Purpose: To determine the relationship between knowledge and self-efficacy with stroke prevention behavior among hypertensive patients in the working area of Ponre Public Health Center. Methods: This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The population comprised all 6,103 hypertensive patients in the working area of Ponre Public Health Center; the Slovin formula yielded a sample of 98 respondents. Knowledge was measured using the Stroke Prevention Knowledge Questionnaire (SPKQ), self-efficacy using the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), and stroke prevention behavior using a questionnaire adapted from Riskesdas 2018. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate (Chi-Square) analysis. Results: The Chi-Square test showed p = 0.000 (p < 0.05) for both the knowledge–behavior and self-efficacy–behavior relationships, indicating a significant association between knowledge and self-efficacy with stroke prevention behavior among hypertensive patients in the working area of Ponre Public Health Center. Conclusion: The higher the knowledge and self-efficacy of hypertensive patients, the better their stroke prevention behavior; continuous health education and support are needed to improve patients’ knowledge and self-efficacy in preventing stroke.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that may lead to serious complications, including diabetic foot ulcer. Adequate foot care is essential to prevent this complication, and patients’ knowledge of foot care is one of the factors that can influence their foot care behavior. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the relationship between foot care knowledge and foot care behavior among diabetes mellitus patients in the working area of Ujung Loe Public Health Center, Bulukumba Regency, in 2026. Methods: This study used a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. Ninety respondents were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using the Diabetic Foot Knowledge Scale (DFKS) and the Nottingham Assessment of Functional Footcare (NAFF) questionnaires, and were analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: Most respondents had a good level of foot care knowledge and good foot care behavior. The statistical test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between foot care knowledge and foot care behavior. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between foot care knowledge and foot care behavior among diabetes mellitus patients. Health care providers are expected to strengthen foot care education so that patients can perform independent foot care to prevent diabetic foot ulcer.

Abstract

Obesity among university students requires weight management strategies that are simple and applicable to daily life. Observing the voluntary (Sunnah) fast on Mondays and Thursdays is a potential approach, yet evidence regarding its impact on body weight remains inconsistent. This study aimed to analyze differences in weight change between obese university students practicing the Monday–Thursday fast and a control group. A pretest-posttest control group design was employed involving 12 male students (Class of 2022) from the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara, with six respondents in each group. The intervention lasted four weeks. Weight change was calculated as the difference between posttest and pretest measurements and compared between the intervention and control groups using an Independent Samples t-test following a Shapiro-Wilk normality test. The intervention group experienced an average weight loss of 4.083 ± 1.889 kg, whereas the control group showed an average weight gain of 1.667 ± 2.338 kg. The difference in mean weight change was 5.750 kg (t = −4.685, df = 10, p = 0.001). The findings indicate a significant difference in weight change between the two groups after the four-week intervention. However, these results should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size and the lack of complete comparability regarding baseline body weight between the groups. Further research with larger samples, more comparable groups, and longer observation periods is needed to confirm these findings.
