Abstract

This study investigates how mistranslated buyer comments affect the accuracy and efficiency of sample making in the Pattern and Marker Department of a garment factory. In global fashion, English is the main language between buyers and suppliers. However, unclear translations caused by incorrect word choices, unfamiliar vocabulary, or poor sentence structure often lead to mistakes in sample making. These issues can slow down production, increase workload, and also reduce the quality of the final product. The research aims to find out what kinds of translation errors happen in buyer comments and how they affect the sample-making process. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study is based on real work experiences and interviews with staff from pattern, merchandising, and sample teams. Due to confidentiality, actual buyer documents aren’t shown, but the examples reflect real cases. The results show common problems include pragmatic, semantic, syntactic, and lexical errors. For instance, measurement notes are sometimes seen as change requests, terms like "clean finish" are misused, and words like "drop" are taken too literally which leading to wrong patterns and wasted time. The study highlights the need for translators to understand both English and garment-making terms. To reduce errors, it suggests creating internal glossaries, training staff on buyer comment styles, and improving teamwork across departments.

Abstract

This study investigates the preservation of imaginative and mythological components in the Indonesian translation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold." The words are abundant in fantastical places, mythical figures, and vibrant natural imagery that establish an enchanting ambiance. Translating such a text necessitates meticulous attention to preserve symbolic significance, aesthetic elegance, and cultural subtleties. This research employs a descriptive qualitative methodology utilizing comparative text analysis between the source and target texts. The results indicate that although the translation effectively preserves mythical names and the fundamental narrative structure, essential poetic elements like melody, rhyme, and metaphorical richness are often diminished. This influences the interpretive depth and the poetic ambiance of the original. The study emphasizes that while the fundamental content is retained, the preservation of poetic aesthetics is a significant challenge. It suggests further solutions including footnotes, adaptable rhythmic variations, and innovative methods to maintain the imaginative and symbolic dimensions for the intended audience.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of deixis in the film Damsel (2023) directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, with a pragmatic approach. Damsel tells the story of Elodie, a young woman caught up in a royal conspiracy and struggling to survive and fight the threat of dragons. The main focus of this research is to explore how deixis is used to build relationships between characters, create cohesion in the narrative, and enrich the social and emotional themes present in the movie. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method to identify various types of deixis found in the dialog between characters in the film, namely deixis personalia, spatial, temporal, discourse, and social. The deixis theory used refers to Levinson (1983), which discusses how words and phrases used by characters function in their social and communication contexts. Through this pragmatic analysis, it is hoped that this research can provide new insights into the role of deixis in conveying messages in films and contribute to the understanding of communication structures in visual media.

Abstract

Teddy Soeriaatmadja's film Lovely Man (2011) presents a nuanced depiction of gender performativity through the protagonist, Ipuy, a transvestite confronting societal shame while navigating his relationship with his daughter, Cahaya, who adheres to heteronormative standards. This study seeks to examine the representation of gender performativity in the film through the lens of Judith Butler's theory, which posits that gender is not an inherent quality but a construct that is perpetually enacted and negotiated within daily life. The employed research method is qualitative analysis, utilizing a critical discourse analysis methodology with an examination of representation within the film. The study's findings indicate that Ipuy's gender identity is not static, but is expressed variably depending on the social setting. Within the transvestite and sex worker subculture, Ipuy's gender presentation is embraced; nevertheless, in familial and broader societal contexts, his identity is repudiated and socially stigmatized. This film critiques the notion of gender binary by illustrating how Ipuy, despite embracing his feminine identity, retains elements of masculinity in his paternal role. Consequently, Lovely Man serves as both an exploration of the intricacies of gender identification and a critique of the inflexibility of societal gender conventions.

Abstract

Gender identity and social impressions are greatly shaped by language, which also is crucial. Gender-neutral language's emergence seeks to support inclusivity and fit non-binary identities. This paper investigates society opinions, debates, and difficulties with gender-neutral terminology. It looks at how gender identity representation is shaped by language patterns and the elements causing acceptance or opposition. It also looks at how legislation and the media shape public perceptions and their contributions to either supporting or impeding language reform. This study examines scholarly literature, policy documents, and media reports using a library research approach. By means of case studies from many linguistic backgrounds, a qualitative study reveals recurrent themes in gender-neutral language acceptance and opposition, therefore evaluating the efficacy of media advocacy and policy implementation. The esults show that even if younger generations are embracing gender-neutral language more and more, institutional and cultural barriers cause opposition. The paper emphasises how media helps to normalise inclusive language and the influence of government actions in either supporting or hindering their acceptance. The study finds that reconciling inclusivity with cultural traditions depends on collaborative efforts among policymakers, educators, media, and language institutions.

Abstract

This research analyzes the types and causes of social deixis used in Duduk Atas Village, West Lombok. Social deixis refers to linguistic expressions that encode social relationships between speakers and addressees. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the researcher collected data through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and note-taking from speakers across five areas of the village. The findings show that the community employs a wide range of social deixis depending on age groups, social status, occupation, religious achievements, and peer relationships. Social deixis used among children includes side and meq/ante, while among teenagers additional forms such as kak tuan/tuanno, bapak, and jejalek appear based on social status and friendship circles. Adults use deixis such as wayahanno, mamiq, and bapak, while elderly individuals are referred to using niniq and puk tuan as markers of respect. General deixis such as ne, ie, and mbilinan are used across all age groups. The study concludes that variations in social deixis are influenced by age, social hierarchy, religious status, jobs, and interpersonal relationships. These findings highlight the importance of social deixis as a sociolinguistic system that shapes politeness, social identity, and communication patterns in the Sasak-speaking community of Duduk Atas Village.

Abstract

Semantics is a branch of linguistics that studies meaning in language, both literal and implicit meanings that are shaped through context and the use of figurative language. In song lyrics, figurative meanings are often used to convey emotions and complex messages, allowing listeners to engage with the song more deeply. This study aims to identify the various types of meanings contained in song lyrics and to analyze the role of semantic aspects in constructing emotional and social messages. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a semantic analysis approach. The findings show that the lyrics of both songs contain various types of semantic meanings, including lexical meaning, grammatical meaning, contextual meaning, referential meaning, non-referential meaning, denotative meaning, connotative meaning, conceptual meaning, associative meaning, terminological meaning, idiomatic meaning, and proverbial meaning. These diverse meanings function to strengthen the delivery of themes such as self-empowerment and feelings of alienation or being forgotten, which are central to both songs. Thus, the semantic meanings within the lyrics not only enrich the content of the songs but also build an emotional connection between the singer and the listener.

Abstract

This academic paper examines the translation techniques applied in the Indonesian translation of the children’s fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk” (A.O.V.P., 1876). The primary objective of this study is to analyze the translation methods employed by the translator in bridging cultural differences embedded in the fairy tale. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, with conclusions drawn after a systematic analysis of the collected data. Primary data were obtained through textual analysis of the translated version of the story. The findings indicate that the translation of “Jack and the Beanstalk” employs various translation techniques, including word-for-word translation, free translation, idiomatic translation, literal translation, adaptation, and transference/borrowing. In addition, reduction, modulation, and amplification techniques are also identified in several parts of the text. The results suggest that the applied translation techniques produce a translation that is easily comprehensible for target-language readers, particularly children as the primary audience. Appropriate selection of translation techniques enables effective transfer of meaning from the source language into the target language. In literary translation practice, a deep understanding of cultural context is essential in order to produce translations that are acceptable and meaningful to target readers. The application of appropriate translation methods and strategies contributes to translations that are accurate, natural, and reader-oriented. This study may serve as a reference for future analyses of translation techniques in adapted fairy tales translated from foreign languages into Indonesian, particularly those involving distinct cultural backgrounds and literary nuances.
