Abstract

Children with special needs have a higher susceptibility to oral health problems. Factors that contribute to this include difficulty in cleaning teeth, limited motor coordination, and certain medical conditions. So that a comprehensive approach is needed that involves cadres and parents in assisting maintaining dental health in children with special needs. This community service implements a method of empowering health cadres and parents in an effort to assist brushing teeth in children with special needs. The assistance begins with the formation and training of health cadres. Health cadres are then involved in assisting parents of children with special needs regarding proper brushing techniques and habits. Furthermore, parents assist in the process of brushing the teeth of children with special needs for 21 days. The implementation of this program aims to improve the skills and habits of brushing teeth in children with special needs. The program of assisting parents and health cadres in brushing teeth in children with special needs through the empowerment method has proven effective in improving tooth brushing behavior in children with special needs.

Abstract

Problems in Kaligawe Village related to the lack of knowledge of the community, especially the elderly, about denture materials (acrylic, valplas, and metal) and proper care are a challenge in dental health. This lack of understanding leads to poor decisions in choosing dentures, which affects comfort, durability, and price. In addition, improper care of dentures can lead to infection and damage to oral tissues. Health counseling and two-way discussions in small groups were used as methods to improve this knowledge. This method proved effective in providing a more in-depth and interactive understanding, allowing older adults to understand the advantages and disadvantages of different denture materials and the importance of proper care. Studies show that direct interaction in small groups helps older adults remember information better and improves their quality of life. In conclusion, this increased understanding through education enables people to make better choices in using dentures, which has a positive impact on their health and quality of life. Keywords: education, denture materials; dental health; interactive discussion

Abstract

Visual impairment can lead to challenges in maintaining oral hygiene for visually impaired people. Individuals with visual impairment have a higher risk of experiencing oral health problems compared to those with normal vision. This limitation is one of the inhibiting factors for blind people in obtaining knowledge about oral health, which in turn will affect their attitudes and actions in maintaining oral hygiene. The sensitivity of blind children is in one of their senses, namely sensitivity to sound through their hearing. Based on these problems, an innovation was made in the form of Smart Card With Audio Connection media to improve the teeth brushing skills of blind children. In the implementation of this activity, through several stages, namely the preparation stage (including licensing and preparation of officers), the implementation stage (pretest of tooth brushing skills and dental hygiene status, training to teachers, and simulation of brushing teeth using Smart Card with Audio Connection), and the evaluation stage (including post test of tooth brushing skills and dental hygiene status). This activity is 17 blind children in SLB Negeri Jepara. The results of the activity show that the Smart Card With Audio Connection Model is effective in improving the teeth brushing skills and dental hygiene status of visually impaired children.

Abstract

The results of the Riset Kesehatan Dasar (RISKESDAS) in 2018 stated that oral health problems in the Indonesian population increased in 2018. In 2013, the percentage of the Indonesian population who had oral and dental problems was 25.9% and then increased in 2018 to 57.6%. Forced children are quite vulnerable to oral health problems. The poor state of the oral cavity is due to unsupervised brushing, other factors such as brushing techniques, motor skills and assistance that are still ignored. In addition, there is a lack of visualization to understand and master oral hygiene practice techniques. Brushing is a common way to clean teeth from plaque and other dental debris. Plaque that remains in the oral cavity is one of the local irritant factors that cause caries and gingivitis. Therefore, the Dental and Oral Health Pocketbook innovation was made to overcome problems related to the dental health maintenance behavior of children with disabilities through parental assistance. Some of the steps applied in this activity include the preparation, implementation, and evaluation stages. This activity involved 7 children with disabilities, each accompanied by their parents in the implementation process. As a result of this activity, it can be concluded that the Pocket Guide proved to be effective in helping children with disabilities understand and apply proper tooth brushing techniques. In addition to improving skills, the program also succeeded in raising awareness about the importance of maintaining oral health.Keyword : pocket guide; tooth brushing skills; dental hygiene status; children with disabilities

Abstract

The most common diseases in the elderly based on the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) are stroke (77.7%), hypertension (41.62%), arthritis (34.18%), diabetes mellitus (12.32%), heart disease (8.5%), and dental and oral problems (87.6%). Basically, diseases suffered by the elderly are rarely with a single diagnosis, but almost always multi-diagnosis. One of the dental and oral health problems experienced by the elderly is Xerostomia (dry mouth). Xerostomia in the elderly can affect the quality of life, due to discomfort in the oral cavity, difficulty in speaking, bad breath and affecting dental and oral health. To overcome this problem, oral gymnastics is carried out for the elderly to maintain and improve the oral function of the elderly. This activity aims to improve the oral health of the elderly through proper diet and oral gymnastics that effectively stimulate saliva production and prevent problems such as dry mouth, gum infections, and tooth decay. Some of the steps taken are strengthening the knowledge and independence of the elderly through counseling, dental examinations, oral gymnastics and evaluation. The target of the activity is 21 elderly people in Padangsari Village. From the results of these activities, it can be concluded that this training provides benefits for the elderly in improving oral health. Through proper dietary patterns and oral exercises, it has been proven effective in maintaining and improving oral cavity function such as stimulating saliva production and preventing oral health problems that are often experienced by the elderly, such as dry mouth, gum infections, and tooth decay. Overall, this training program helps improve the quality of life of the elderly through a holistic and practical approach. Keywords: Community empowerment; optimization of oral cavity movements; oral exercises; elderly.
