Abstract

This study comprehensively examines the role of the Majelis Permusyawaratan Ulama (MPU) in preventing violations of Islamic Sharia, with a focused case study in Aceh. The research is guided by institutional governance theory and conflict mediation concepts .The study traces the historical development of Islam in Aceh, the rationale behind establishing MPU, and the multifaceted challenges faced by the government and the ulama in enforcing Sharia law. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with key MPU members (Ustadz M. Khalis and Ustadz M. Husen), document analysis, and extensive field observations across various strategic areas in Aceh. Findings indicate that MPU, as an authoritative and consultative council of ulama, plays a critical role in interpreting Islamic law, issuing fatwas on issues such as khalwat and public morality, advising governmental bodies, and facilitating public deliberation forums to manage interpretative conflicts. Moreover, MPU functions as a mediator between state and society in Sharia-related issues, ensuring that policies are reflective of both traditional values and contemporary socio-political needs. Strategic recommendations include enhancing institutional capacity, implementing robust oversight mechanisms, and formulating adaptive, inclusive policies that resonate with present-day cultural and technological advancements.

Abstract

Religious life is a form of belief in supernatural powers believed to influence the lives of individuals and communities. Bandar Bireuen Village is a village in Bireuen Regency where the majority of the population is Muslim, but it also contains a minority community of Buddhists. The existence of the Buddhist community in the village reflects a harmonious, mutually supportive society despite differences in beliefs. The Buddhist community does not isolate itself and builds social relations in forums with the surrounding community, regardless of religious differences. This study aims to determine how the Buddhist community strives to maintain interfaith harmony in a Muslim-majority society. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Robert David Putnam's Social Capital theory, which emphasizes the importance of trust, norms, and social networks in creating societal harmony. This study used a qualitative, descriptive method. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the Buddhist community actively maintains harmony through social adaptation, interfaith communication, and involvement in various social activities. This community upholds prevailing cultural and religious norms and maintains close social relations with the Muslim community. Despite facing obstacles such as stereotypes, limited worship spaces, and challenges in passing on religious values to the younger generation, the Buddhist community remains consistent in maintaining peace. It is an important part of strengthening social harmony in Bandar Bireuen Village.

Abstract

This study aims to formulate and analyze the concept of the Contemporary City of Medina through the synergy of M. Umer Chapra's Islamic political-economic thought with Francis Fukuyama's social capital and institutional theory. Pasuruan City is used as an empirical case study, while Medina City is positioned as a normative-historical reference. This approach departs from a critique of the modern urban development paradigm that overemphasizes economic growth and technocratic efficiency, while often neglecting distributive justice, public ethics, and the quality of social relations. Using qualitative methods and a comparative design, the study views the city as a complex, adaptive entity shaped by the dynamic interaction between economic, social, institutional, and normative-spiritual dimensions. Data were obtained through a review of primary literature by Chapra and Fukuyama, historical documentation of Medina City, and studies on urban governance and sustainability. Secondary data include the RPJMD (Regional Medium-Term Development Plan), RTRW (Regional Spatial Plan), and socio-economic statistics of Pasuruan City, supplemented by semi-structured interviews with planning officials, religious scholars, community leaders, and local entrepreneurs. Content and thematic analysis were used to operationalizeto operationalize Chapra's concepts of justice, welfare, basic needs, and economic ethics, and to use Fukuyama's concepts of trust, social capital, institutional capacity, and rule of law as evaluation indicators. The results show that historical Medina serves as an ideal model, supported by high social capital, legitimate institutions, and an orientation towards collective welfare. Meanwhile, Pasuruan shows institutional progress and public services, but still faces social inequality, weak citizen participation, and limited integration of ethics into governance. The Chapra-Fukuyama integration produces a conceptual model of a city that emphasizes the harmony among maqasid al-shariah, good governance, and the SDGs through Islamic ethical governance and the co-governance of government and civil society, serving as a guide for just, inclusive, and sustainable city development.

Abstract

Adolescents are an age group vulnerable to emotional, social, and psychological changes, making mental health an important aspect that requires attention. In this study, families, especially parents, play a strategic role as the closest environment that can help adolescents cope with life's pressures through healthy interpersonal communication. This study aims to determine parental interpersonal communication patterns in supporting adolescent mental health in Banda Aceh City. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach, collecting data through in-depth interviews. The research informants numbered seven: three parents, three adolescents aged 17–20 years, and one child and adolescent psychologist. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, conclusion, and verification. The results show that parental interpersonal communication patterns play an important role in maintaining adolescent mental health through five main aspects: openness, empathy, support, positive attitudes, and equality. Openness provides a safe space for adolescents to share; empathy makes adolescents feel understood; support increases self-confidence; positive attitudes strengthen self-esteem; and equality encourages adolescents to feel valued. However, equality remains a challenge due to the influence of traditional parenting patterns and hierarchical family cultures. This study concludes that parental interpersonal communication is a protective factor for adolescent mental health. Therefore, parents need to build more open, empathetic, supportive, positive, and participatory communication in their daily lives.

Abstract

This research focuses on researching the construction of political identity carried out by the Banda Aceh mayoral candidate, Illiza Sa'aduddin Djamal, through the use of religious, local, and visual symbols when conducting an election campaign for the Banda Aceh City region in 2024. The approach used in this study is quantitative with a survey method using secondary data from 130 respondents in the Baiturrahman District who were selected through the proportionate stratified random sampling technique. This study aims to examine how religious symbols such as the chanting of the Badr prayer, the use of traditional musical instruments, Acehnese traditional clothing, and regional languages function as important instruments in shaping the construction of Illiza's political identity. The results of the study show that the construction of Illiza's political identity is built through: (1) religious identity that places candidates as a representation of Islamic values, (2) cultural identity that associates candidates with the cultural heritage and history of Acehnese women's struggles, and (3) self-visualization of candidates through attractive displays to attract youth groups. Based on the findings of the study, it shows that religious, local culture, and visual symbols are used as ornaments during campaigns that aim to attract public sympathy and trust towards Illiza. The use of symbols in the campaign received a positive response from the people of Banda Aceh City. Gen Z is interested in the visual symbols used by the Illiza-Afdhal candidate pair through uniquely designed billboards and banners, the use of campaign clothes with bright colors, and matching. Meanwhile, the elderly group is interested in the cultural and religious symbols used by Illiza-Afdhal during the campaign through religious tausiah, shalawat badar, and the use of traditional musical instruments that characterize the peculiarities of local culture.
