Abstract

Introduction: Breastfeeding in the early postpartum period is critical for maternal–infant health, yet maternal psychological conditions may influence breastfeeding practices. This study aimed to examine the association between maternal mental health status and breastfeeding behavior among early postpartum mothers at PKU Muhammadiyah Delanggu Hospital, Indonesia. Research Methodology: A quantitative descriptive–analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted during June–July 2023. A total of 65 early postpartum mothers were recruited using accidental (convenience) sampling. Maternal mental health was assessed using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), while breastfeeding behavior was measured using a validated questionnaire and LATCH observation. Data were analyzed using univariate statistics and the chi-square test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: Overall, 50.8% of mothers had good mental health, and 58.5% demonstrated positive breastfeeding behavior. A significant association was found between maternal mental health and breastfeeding behavior (χ² test, p = 0.018). Mothers with good mental health were more likely to exhibit positive breastfeeding behavior compared with those with poorer mental health (36.9% vs 21.5%). Conversely, negative breastfeeding behavior was higher among mothers with poorer mental health (27.7% vs 13.8%). Conclusion: Maternal mental health is significantly associated with breastfeeding behavior in the early postpartum period. Integrating routine mental health screening into postpartum care may improve breastfeeding outcomes and support maternal well-being.

Abstract

Introduction: Preoperative anxiety is a common and clinically significant issue among surgical patients, contributing to adverse perioperative outcomes. Despite growing attention to patient-centered care, structured educational interventions remain inconsistently implemented in Indonesian hospitals. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of structured preoperative education in reducing anxiety among surgical patients. Research Methodology: A parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted in two tertiary hospitals in Indonesia from January to April 2026. A total of 140 adult patients scheduled for elective surgery were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 70) that received structured preoperative education or a control group (n = 70) that received standard care. Anxiety was measured using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Data were analyzed using independent t-tests and multiple linear regression, with α = 0.05. Results: Baseline characteristics were comparable between groups (p > 0.05). The intervention group demonstrated significantly lower post-intervention anxiety scores compared to the control group (34.5 ± 6.8 vs. 42.3 ± 7.2; mean difference = −7.8; p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis confirmed that structured preoperative education was independently associated with reduced anxiety (β = −7.12; 95% CI: −9.85 to −4.39; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Structured preoperative education is an effective and clinically meaningful intervention for reducing anxiety among surgical patients. Integrating standardized educational protocols into perioperative care may enhance patient-centered outcomes and improve surgical service quality in resource-constrained settings.

Abstract

Introduction: Second-degree burns require effective topical therapy to accelerate tissue regeneration and reduce complications. Current treatments remain limited by side effects and suboptimal regenerative outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a combination gel of Jatropha multifida L. latex, placenta extract, and carboxymethyl chitosan (JM–P–CMC) on burn wound healing by assessing fibroblast growth factor (FGF) expression, fibroblast count, and collagen density. Research Methodology: A post-test-only controlled experimental design was conducted using 18 male Sprague-Dawley rats, allocated into 6 groups. Standardised second-degree burns (1×1 cm) were induced and treated for 15 days. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses were performed at days 5, 10, and 15. Data were analysed using the Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests (α=0.05), with effect sizes expressed as median differences (%) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: The JM–P–CMC group demonstrated significantly higher FGF expression compared to saline (Day 15 median: 75 vs 33; =42%; p=0.0015; 95% CI: 18–60). Fibroblast counts were also significantly increased (median: 55 vs 17; =38%; p=0.0001; 95% CI: 20–64). Collagen density was markedly higher in the intervention group (58.83% vs 21.70%; p<0.01). A strong positive correlation was observed between fibroblast count and collagen density on day 10, whereas FGF showed an inverse regulatory relationship with collagen during the remodelling phase. Conclusion: The JM–P–CMC gel significantly enhances burn wound healing through modulation of FGF expression, fibroblast proliferation, and collagen deposition. This formulation represents a promising, safe, and cost-effective alternative for topical burn management and supports the integration of bioactive-based therapies into clinical and nursing practice.

Abstract

Introduction: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic condition requiring sustained self-management to prevent complications and maintain quality of life. Despite increasing prevalence, evidence on how self-care behaviors influence patient-reported outcomes in primary care settings remains limited. This study aimed to examine the association between self-care practices and quality of life among patients with T2DM. Research Methodology: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted at Cendrawasih Health Center, Makassar, Indonesia, from June to September 2023. A total of 266 participants were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the WHOQOL-BREF and Self-Care Activity Scale. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were performed, followed by logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratios (AOR) with 95% confidence intervals. Results: Most respondents demonstrated good self-care (98.5%) and very good quality of life (96.6%). Bivariate analysis showed a significant association between self-care and quality of life (p < 0.001; C = 0.489). In multivariate analysis, good self-care was strongly associated with higher odds of a very good quality of life (AOR = 12.85; 95% CI: 2.10–78.60; p = 0.005), after adjusting for age, sex, duration of diabetes, and education level. Conclusion: Self-care practices are a strong and independent determinant of quality of life in T2DM patients. Strengthening structured self-management education, continuous monitoring, and community-based support systems is essential to improve patient outcomes. Integrating behavioral and health system interventions may enhance sustainable diabetes management.

Abstract

Introduction: Linguistic strategy has emerged as a critical yet underexplored determinant of health service quality within public administration systems. Ineffective policy language, inconsistent terminology, and a lack of cultural alignment often create barriers to service access and utilization. This study aimed to examine the role of linguistic strategies in shaping health service quality and quantify their impact across key service dimensions. Research Methodology: An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was employed, combining a cross-sectional survey (n = 422) with qualitative inquiry. Participants included health administrators, frontline workers, and service users in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Data were collected using validated questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multivariate regression models. Statistical significance was set at α = 0.05. Results: Linguistic strategy dimensions were significantly associated with service quality outcomes. Cultural appropriateness showed the strongest effect (β = 0.35; 95% CI: 0.24–0.46; p < 0.001), followed by clarity of communication (β = 0.32; 95% CI: 0.21–0.43; p < 0.001) and terminology consistency (β = 0.27; 95% CI: 0.16–0.38; p < 0.001). Feedback mechanisms also demonstrated a significant contribution (β = 0.22; 95% CI: 0.11–0.33; p = 0.002). Demographic variables had a limited influence. Conclusion: Linguistic strategy is a decisive and modifiable determinant of health service quality. Integrating clear, consistent, and culturally adaptive communication into health administration reform can substantially improve accessibility, responsiveness, and user satisfaction. Policy interventions should prioritize standardized terminology, simplified policy discourse, and strengthened feedback systems to enhance overall system performance.

Abstract

Early rupture of membranes is one of the complicators in pregnancy and childbirth that plays a role in increasing perinatal maternal pain and death that can be caused by infection, where the amniotic membrane that is a barrier to the entry of infection-causing germs is no longer there so that it can be dangerous for the mother and fetus. The purpose of conducting research is to determine the incidence of SC with indications of premature rupture of membranes in Poso area general hospitals—descriptive research method with a Retrospective approach. The study subjects were mothers with SC delivery with hints of KPD selected using purposive sampling techniques. The results of 30 SC mothers with symptoms of Early Rupture of Water (KPD) at the Poso Regional General Hospital were dominated by mothers aged 20-35 years, primiparous parity, gestational age ≥37 weeks, and not working. It can be concluded that it cannot be ascertained that there is a relationship between maternal age and the incidence of KPD because the development or maturity of each woman's reproductive organs is not the same; other causative factors can also be seen from a psychological and financial perspective, such as mothers who experience anxiety in primigravida mothers. Gestational age also influences the older the gestational age will result in the opening of the cervix and stretching of the amniotic membrane, which affects the amniotic membrane so that it is weaker and more accessible to break. Regarding the activities of maternity mothers who work and do not work, it will not affect their health if the mother can still control rest and knows the limits of work. The cause of KPD is multifactor and is usually associated with increased physical stress that causes the amniotic membrane to become weak.

Abstract

Stunting is a serious public health problem, especially in children under five. The causes of stunting are complex and involve a variety of factors. However, parenting that does not pay attention to nutrition, health education, feeding practices, attention, stimulation, and access to health services has been identified as significant contributors. This study aims to determine the factors that influence the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 6-59 months. The research design is observational analytics using a case-control research design. The results showed an odds ratio (OR) value of 4.681, which means toddlers 6-59 years old with a significant parenting style will be at risk of stunting 4.68 times accompanied by a confidence interval of 95% (CI) (Cl 95%), obtained a Lower Limit (LL) value of 1.641 and Upper Limit (UL) 13.350. It can be concluded that parenting affects the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 6-59 months. Poor parenting in nutrition, health education, feeding practices, attention, stimulation, and access to health services can contribute to the risk of stunting in early childhood. Parents need to provide proper attention and support regarding nutrition, health, and stimulation of children to support optimal growth and development
