Abstract

The debate on the reading of the Qur'an and methods of interpretation represents a dynamic and evolving aspect of academic discourse, particularly within the context of the contemporary intellectual landscape. Two of the most prominent Muslim intellectuals are Mohammed Arkoun and Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid. The two figures in question exhibit similarities in their approach to Qur'anic interpretation, particularly in their reliance on Arabic literary sources. However, they employ disparate methodologies in their respective interpretations of the Qur'an. The objective of this article is to examine the methods proposed by Mohammed Arkoun and Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid and to ascertain how these two figures interpret the contemporary Qur'an. A comparative study revealed that Mohammed Arkoun and Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid adopt a similar approach, namely hermeneutics. However, the hermeneutical approach of each figure differs. Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid adheres to a progressive quasi-objectivist hermeneutical perspective, whereas Mohammed Arkoun espouses a subjectivist hermeneutical stance. In his approach to reading the Qur'an, Arkoun draws upon epistemological principles, whereas Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid employs discourse criticism. Arkoun regards the Qur'an as the language of revelation enshrined in the corpus (the Ottoman Mushaf) as God's parole. In contrast, Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid views the Qur'an as a historical text that must be contextualised in order to gain an accurate understanding of its ideals, which are shālihun likulli zamān wa makān.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of religious minorities in Indonesian public discourse using a critical hermeneutics approach integrated with critical discourse analysis. The scope of this study includes mass media discourse, public officials’ statements, policy documents, and popular religious discourses circulating in the public sphere. The objective of this study is to reveal patterns of representation of religious minorities, identify the ideologies and power relations underlying these representations, and explain their social implications for the position of religious minorities. This study employs a qualitative method with a critical-interpretative design, in which data are collected through documentary analysis and examined textually, contextually, and ideologically through hermeneutic reflection. The findings indicate that religious minorities are predominantly represented as social threats, deviations from majority norms, objects of state regulation, and passive subjects with limited discursive space. These representations function as symbolic mechanisms that reproduce majority dominance and structural injustice. The study concludes that critical hermeneutics is an effective approach for uncovering the relationship between meaning, ideology, and power in Indonesia’s religious public discourse.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon in higher education where many students still have intolerant attitudes and lack inclusive attitudes. This study was conducted with the aim of describing and analyzing the role of multicultural Islamic education in building the inclusive character of students in higher education. The method used is a descriptive qualitative method with a literature study approach. Data in this study were obtained by collecting, reviewing, and analyzing data from several literature sources such as books, journals, and research relevant to this research. Data analysis uses the Miles and Huberman model. The results show that the implementation of multicultural Islamic education is a solution in building and strengthening the inclusive character of students in college through the integration of Islamic values with the curriculum, learning methods, and academic culture of higher education. Thus, multicultural Islamic education does not only focus on theoretical understanding, but also on efforts to internalize Islamic values in the learning process, thereby creating a tolerant and inclusive generation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in strengthening the character of ninth-grade female students (santriwati) at SMP Islam Sabilul Wafa in the digital era. The background of this research is based on the rapid development of information technology, which brings both positive impacts and challenges to students' character formation, particularly in moral and religious aspects. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research subjects consisted of five female students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observation, while data analysis used an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that PAI plays a significant role in strengthening students' character, especially in terms of religiosity, discipline, and responsibility. In the digital era, PAI also functions as a moral foundation that helps students filter information and use technology wisely. Supporting factors include a religious school environment and the role of teachers as role models, while inhibiting factors come from technological influences and external environments.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the low level of student participation in learning the Qur'an in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) subjects in class VII at A MTs Daarul Ihsaan Cimahi. This condition is indicated by the lack of student activeness in reading, asking questions, and interacting during the learning process. This study aims to describe the implementation of the peer tutoring method and to determine the improvement of student participation in learning the Qur'an. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) with the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages conducted in two cycles. The subjects of this study were seventh-grade students of MTs Daarul Ihsaan Cimahi, totaling 28 students. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the implementation of the peer tutoring method significantly improved student participation in learning the Qur'an, as indicated by increased student activeness in reading, asking questions, discussing, and engaging in group activities. In Cycle I, student participation reached 62%, and in Cycle II it increased to 85%, exceeding the predetermined success indicator of 75%. Therefore, the peer tutoring method can be an effective alternative in improving the quality of PAI learning, especially in Qur'anic learning.

Abstract

The learning of kitab kuning (classical Islamic texts) in Islamic boarding schools plays an important role in shaping students’ character. The ta’lim approach not only emphasizes the transfer of knowledge but also instills moral values, discipline, and spirituality. This article aims to analyze the strategy of ta’lim-based learning of kitab kuning in shaping students’ character by examining relevant academic sources. The method used is a literature study with content analysis of sources taken from Islamic education journals. The results show that strategies such as bandongan, sorogan, and the habituation of proper conduct significantly influence the development of students’ religious character. In addition, several spelling errors were found in the analyzed sources, indicating the need for improvement in academic writing.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of learning methods in creating joyful learning within Islamic Cultural History (Sejarah Kebudayaan Islam – SKI) instruction. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through structured observations, semi-structured interviews with teachers and eight selected students, student perception questionnaires using a 5-point Likert scale, and learning documentation. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, supported by source and method triangulation to ensure data validity. The findings reveal that the implemented learning methods encouraged active student engagement, generated positive emotional responses, strengthened reflection on character values, and enhanced students’ ability to connect historical figures and events in Islamic history with their personal experiences. Students’ enthusiasm increased significantly from 48% to 85%, as indicated by observational data. These findings suggest that Islamic Cultural History learning can be developed not merely as a process of historical knowledge transmission but also as a space for character development and spiritual reflection. This approach aligns with the transformative principles of the Merdeka Curriculum and supports the broader goal of providing quality education.

Abstract

This study aims to definitively formulate and comprehensively evaluate the role of Murobbi (close mentors/dormitory supervisors) in instilling adab (Islamic etiquette and morality) among students at Pesantren Subang. Amidst the rapid waves of modernization and digitalization that trigger various moral degradation phenomena among the younger generation, Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) consistently uphold the universal principle of prioritizing adab before knowledge. Utilizing a qualitative approach with a descriptive analysis method, this study positions the author as the primary instrument conducting direct participatory observations and intensive in-depth interviews with the Murobbi board and students at Pesantren Subang. The results indicate that the Murobbi plays a pivotal role transforming into three strategic functions: as Uswah Hasanah (a conceptual living role model), an embedded mentor (through psychological-spiritual approaches), and a dynamic daily behavior evaluator. The integration of this strategy is empirically proven to significantly improve the quality of students' adab towards teachers, peers, and the environment. This study concludes that strengthening the function of close mentors (Murobbi) is an absolute prerequisite for the successful internalisation of character values and moral revitalization in contemporary Islamic educational institutions.
