Abstract

This study aims to describe the linguistic challenges faced by Thai students in attending Indonesian-medium lectures at higher education institutions in Yogyakarta. It also explores their adaptation strategies and evaluates the role of Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) programs in supporting academic readiness. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews with seven Thai students from different study programs. The findings reveal that the main difficulties involve limited academic vocabulary, differences between formal and informal language varieties, and unfamiliar technical terms used in lectures. These barriers contribute to communication anxiety and passive classroom participation. Students cope with these challenges by seeking peer support, practicing self-regulated learning, and using translation technologies. The BIPA program is considered inadequate in addressing academic needs due to its short duration and emphasis on daily communication rather than academic language. This study concludes that academic vocabulary mastery is central to Thai students’ successful adaptation. Accordingly, it highlights the need to develop Thai-based instructional materials and more academically oriented BIPA programs to improve learning autonomy and effectiveness for international students.

Abstract

Anomic aphasia is a language disorder resulting from brain damage, characterized by difficulty accessing lexical items, particularly in the elderly population post-injury. Although previous research has described language deficits in various types of aphasia, a deep understanding of the manifestations of anomic aphasia in older adults and the compensatory strategies they use is still limited. This study aims to comprehensively describe language disorders and identify compensatory communication strategies used by elderly subjects with anomic aphasia post-brain injury. Qualitative research with a case study approach was conducted on a 59-year-old female subject with a history of brain injury who exhibited symptoms of verbal/semantic paraphasia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews in two sessions (30 minutes each), then analyzed using linguistic analysis (paraphasia classification, Mean Length of Utterance/MLU) and thematic analysis. Data source triangulation was conducted with the caregivers to ensure the validity of the findings. Frequency analysis shows a dominance of lexical-semantic errors (verbal/semantic paraphasia = 95.24%) compared to phonemic errors (4.76%), confirming the diagnosis of fluent (anomic) aphasia. A very high MLU (71.0 words/utterance) and intact intonation and prosody rule out speech motor disorders. The deficit centers on the failure of lexical access from long-term memory (self-name substitution, procedural memory loss) and short-term memory (tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon, inconsistency of quantitative information). Thematically, lexical deficits trigger high self-monitoring and extreme cognitive load, manifested in significant silent pauses (4–6 seconds). Subjects adopted three main compensatory strategies: circumlocution as a linguistic/cognitive strategy, gestures as nonverbal compensation, and self-acknowledgment leading to adaptive introversion. The manifestations of anomic aphasia in elderly subjects are multidimensional, involving not only linguistic deficits but also cognitive load management impairments due to high metacognitive awareness. Clinical management requires a holistic approach that includes lexical rehabilitation interventions, support for working memory function, and communication anxiety reduction strategies.

Abstract

Digital transformation in second language learning has driven significant changes in the teaching practices of Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) in a global context. This study aims to examine the forms of digital media innovation used in BIPA instruction and their relevance to global language learning. The research employs a narrative literature review method by analyzing academic publications, policy reports, and recent research findings (2020–2025) related to the digitalization of language learning and educational policies across various contexts. The findings indicate that the digitalization of teaching materials through the use of various digital platforms such as Google Sites, E-BIPA 2.0, Canva, and multimodal interactive media plays an important role in enhancing learning flexibility, efficiency, and personalization. The integration of Indonesian cultural content in digital formats further expands the function of BIPA as a means of cultural diplomacy at the global level. Nevertheless, challenges remain in terms of teachers’ digital competencies, gaps in learners’ technological literacy, and the consistency of instructional material quality. Overall, the digitalization of BIPA offers significant opportunities to strengthen the position of the Indonesian language as an international language through creative, adaptive, and sustainable learning media. These findings are expected to serve as a foundation for the development of technology-based BIPA policies and instructional models in broader global contexts.

Abstract

Writing is often understood as merely an activity of putting words together. In reality, developing writing skills involves processes of understanding situations, considering meaning, and arranging experiences into ideas. This condition causes the writing process to become disconnected from students’ thinking experiences. This study addresses this gap by utilizing augmented reality–based learning media as a visual experience trigger prior to writing activities. The purpose of this study is to examine how three-dimensional visual stimuli influence students’ critical thinking processes and writing skills across educational levels. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with subjects consisting of elementary, junior high, and senior high school students who learned using the NegoCard AR Learning media. Data were obtained through classroom observation and analysis of students’ written work. The findings indicate that augmented reality visuals help students build situational understanding, connect everyday experiences, and develop ideas before translating them into writing. Differences in educational levels affect the depth of ideas, text structure, and the way students interpret visual contexts. This study confirms that writing instruction initiated through visual experiences encourages students’ cognitive engagement and naturally opens space for critical thinking. Augmented reality is viewed as a medium capable of bridging experience, thinking processes, and writing skills in Indonesian language learning.

Abstract

Reading instruction of children’s literature in elementary schools plays a crucial role in developing literacy and supporting students’ character formation. However, educational practices reveal a gap between the didactic potential of children’s literature and its classroom implementation, as instruction remains focused on literal text comprehension. This study aims to explore trends in children’s literature reading instruction based on local culture from a didactic values perspective. The study employed a qualitative approach using an exploratory design based on a literature review. Data sources consisted of theoretical books and scholarly journal articles related to children’s literature instruction, local culture, and didactic values. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis to identify patterns and tendencies across previous studies. The findings indicate that children’s literature reading instruction is still dominated by technical orientations, while explicit exploration of didactic values has not become a primary focus. Local culture is generally used as a supporting context rather than as a reflective pedagogical foundation. Didactic values tend to appear implicitly in literary texts, with their reinforcement largely dependent on teachers’ initiatives. This study highlights the need for a shift toward a didactic and contextual approach to children’s literature reading instruction and proposes a conceptual framework that positions local culture as an interpretative medium to support meaningful value construction and character education in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the types and processes of abbreviations in each short story contained in the short story collection Jreng by Putu Wijaya. The research method chosen is a qualitative descriptive method with a listening and note-taking data collection technique. The data are in the form of abbreviated words found in the short story manuscript. The data source in this study is the short story collection Jreng by Putu Wijaya. The stages carried out by the researcher in data analysis used the interactive analysis method of Miles et al. (2014), which consists of data collection, data condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Based on data analysis, the study found that the types of abbreviations in the short story collection were 35 abbreviations (the initial syllable of a word, the last syllable of a word, the omission of the first letter, the first three letters, the first four letters, and the first five letters), 14 truncations (the initial syllable of a word, the last syllable of a word, the omission of the first letter, the first three letters, the first four letters, and the first five letters), 9 acronyms (the first letter of each word, the first syllable of each word, the first three letters of each word, the first two letters of word 1 and the first three letters of word 2, and irregular), 4 contractions (the omission of letters at the beginning of a word and the omission of letters in the middle of a word), and 2 letter symbols (letter symbols mark currency and letter symbols mark monetary units).

Abstract

This study examines code-mixing as a linguistic and socio-psychological strategy in creating humor on the Bintang Emon YouTube podcast (siniar). Specifically, this study examines the forms and purposes of code-mixing in the podcast, which is known for its humor strategies. The focus of the study is on how the mixing of Indonesian, English, and regional languages is used to create humor and closeness with the audience. The approach used is descriptive qualitative with sociolinguistic analysis of 32 speech samples from several episodes of the podcast. The results show five forms of code-mixing: word, phrase, clause, hybrid (baster), and sentence, with the word form dominating. Functionally, code-mixing is used to create humorous effects, affirm cultural identity, adapt to the audience, and clarify meaning. In conclusion, code-mixing in the Bintang Emon podcast is a creative linguistic strategy that reflects social identity, spontaneous humor, and the linguistic dynamics of the digital age.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the existence of Javanese female characters in the novel Nonik Jamu by Rina Suryakusuma through the lens of Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism. The analysis focuses on two main aspects: first, how women are positioned as the Other within the patriarchal structure of Javanese culture; second, how the female protagonist, particularly Kinanti, asserts her existence through Beauvoir’s three existential strategies: working, becoming an intellectual, and initiating social transformation. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis techniques on narrative excerpts that reflect gender inequality and the struggles of female characters in the novel. The results reveal that the women in the story are not merely portrayed as victims of patriarchy, but as active subjects who build awareness, claim autonomy, and challenge traditional constraints. Beauvoir’s existential strategies prove relevant for understanding the transcendence of Javanese women toward an authentic life. The findings of this study are expected to enrich feminist literary studies in Indonesia and serve as a reference for literature learning that applies gender and existentialist perspectives.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of myths and their relationship with nature in Papuan folklore. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method. The research data are in the form of sentence excerpts found in the Kumpulan Cerita Rakyat Papua (Collection of Papuan Folktales), which serves as the primary data source for this study. These data were collected using the reading and note-taking technique. Subsequently, the collected data were analyzed using an interactive analysis technique. The results of the study indicate that Papuan folklore contains a wide variety of myths. These include origin myths, karma myths, demigod myths, myths about the supernatural powers of characters, myths about sacred objects, myths about deities, myths about astral beings, and myths about animals. These myths have a strong relationship with nature. This is because the various forms of myths are closely linked to natural components, such as trees, animals, and natural disasters. The relationship between myths and nature carries a profound meaning about the importance of protecting and preserving the surrounding natural environment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development of the personality structure of the character Sore in the film Sore: Istri dari Masa Depan through the integration of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic perspective and Mochtar Lubis’s theory of Indonesian human characteristics. The study focuses on the interaction between the id, ego, and superego in relation to sociocultural traits in influencing the character’s behavior and choices. The research employs a qualitative method using content analysis of the character’s dialogue and actions. Data collection was conducted through observation and note-taking, while data analysis encompassed the stages of reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings indicate that Sore’s personality structure undergoes significant changes correlated with the typology of the Indonesian people. A unique finding indicates the absence of any signs of superstition, proving that Mochtar Lubis’s theory is not entirely absolute and is dynamic, evolving in line with the development of individual rationality. The study concludes that the characteristics of the Indonesian people are highly dependent on their level of psychological maturity in negotiating with reality.
