Journal of Indonesian Islam (JIIS) publishes articles on Indonesian Islam from various perspectives, covering both literary and fieldwork studies. The journal puts emphasis on aspects related to Islamic studies in an Indonesian context, with special reference to culture, politics, law, society, eco­no­mics, history, and doctrines. Journal of Indonesian Islam always places Indonesian Islam in the central focus of academic inquiry, and invites any comprehensive observation of Islamic expressions with various dimensions in the country. The journal, serving as a forum for the study of Indonesian Islam, supports focused studies of particular themes and interdisciplinary studies in relation to the subject. It has become a medium of exchange of ideas and research findings from various traditions of learning that have interacted in the scholarly manner.

Abstract

This article examines the adaptation of pesantren through the Networking Package program implemented at Pesantren Aljauhari, Garut, West Java. The program promotes collaboration among the kyai, santri, and parents by extending religious education into the home, thereby strengthening the integration of pesantren and family-based learning. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study draws on field observations, interviews, and a review of relevant literature to analyze the program’s management and educational practices. The findings indicate that the program enhances parental engagement as co-educators and reflects a broader transformation in pesantren mana­gement. Rather than relying primarily on the kyai’s personal authority, the institution adopts structured and colla­borative management practices to address contem­porary educational challenges. These findings demonstrate that managerial innovation can strengthen institutional sustain­nability while preserving the traditional values of pesantren, providing a practical model for similar Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

Islamic peacebuilding faces a contemporary challenge: women are simultaneously affected by conflict, transnational labor vulnerability, and recruitment into violent extremist networks, yet their preventive and peacebuilding capacities remain under examined. This study addresses that gap by examining the experiences and perspectives of former Indonesian female migrant domestic workers (FMDWs) and assessing how religious diplomacy, religious moderation, and gender-responsive P/CVE can strengthen global security. Using a mixed-methods design, the study combines demographic data with closed- and open-ended responses from 104 former FMDWs, including 58 who had worked in the Middle East and 46 in Asian destination countries. Fifty-five participants reported familiarity with radical ideologies or groups. As protective measures, 32 emphasized moderate religious understanding and regular worship, 28 highlighted self-care, 14 stressed family communication, 9 identified critical use of social media, 11 called for stronger government intervention, and 6 recommended agency-led prevention training. The findings show that FMDWs should be understood not only as vulnerable workers but also as potential agents of peace. Gender-responsive migration protection, credible religious guidance, and coordinated P/CVE partnerships are therefore essential to inclusive and sustainable security.

Abstract

The ban on Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) in 2017 prompted its actors to adapt to digital platforms. Combining a case study approach with netnography, this article examines Felix Siauw’s da‘wa strategies for propagating Islamic Caliphate ideology after 2017. It finds that Islamic utopian thinking persists through evolving communication strategies and the rebranding of Islamic preaching within the digital media ecosystem. By collaborating with influencers on podcasts and engaging contemporary political issues through short videos and visual content, Siauw has developed a more adaptive and commercially oriented approach to digital preaching. His growing popularity as an alternative religious authority is also shaped by broader socio-political developments, including perceptions of Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama’s (NU) limited response to mining concessions and the One-Piece movement in August 2025, which mobilised young Indonesians through mass protests. These dynamics have expanded the discursive space for his digital presence, enabling him to rebrand as a digital entrepreneurial preacher while retaining his ideological commitment to Islamic utopianism.
