Abstract

This structured literature review explores the role of corporate governance in enhancing the effectiveness of management control systems (MCS), with a particular focus on the emerging challenges and strategic directions in implementation. Drawing on peer-reviewed publications from 2020 to 2025, the study synthesizes four critical themes: (1) the functional role of governance in MCS design, (2) multidimensional indicators of control system effectiveness, (3) barriers to governance-aligned MCS implementation, and (4) strategic responses to contemporary governance demands. The review reveals that corporate governance improves MCS by reinforcing transparency, accountability, risk mitigation, and stakeholder engagement, particularly when supported by internal audit, board independence, and digital capabilities. It also highlights emerging concerns such as cybersecurity, remote work productivity, technological adaptation, and employee well-being. Theoretically, this study contributes by integrating control systems theory with digital governance and behavioral insights; practically, it offers guidance for designing responsive, ethical, and performance-driven control architectures. Limitations include the reliance on secondary sources and the lack of empirical generalization, prompting future research to investigate causal mechanisms through mixed-methods approaches

Abstract

This review explores the transformative impact of digital technologies on management control systems (MCS), synthesizing recent developments, theoretical insights, and practical implications. In the digital era, MCS have evolved from static, hierarchical tools into dynamic infrastructures powered by Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and Cloud Computing. These technologies enhance decision-making, real-time monitoring, and operational transparency, but also introduce complex challenges related to cybersecurity, digital competence, and regulatory compliance. The review identifies key barriers—including cultural resistance, data protection demands, and skills gaps—while highlighting the strategic advantages of automation, system integration, and adaptive control mechanisms. Furthermore, the analysis emphasizes the role of non-financial factors such as employee well-being, self-efficacy, and engagement, all of which influence the effectiveness of digital MCS in modern organizations. The integration of governance structures and digital infrastructure is shown to be vital for managing risk and sustaining organizational agility. This study contributes to the literature by reconceptualizing digital MCS as both technical systems and sociotechnical processes. The review concludes with a discussion of limitations and a future research agenda focused on empirical validation, longitudinal analysis, and the ethical implications of control in digitally transformed workplaces.

Abstract

This study critically reassesses the effectiveness of performance-based incentive systems in enhancing employee productivity and engagement. Through a qualitative descriptive literature review, the paper explores both the intended benefits and unintended consequences of incentive schemes in organizational contexts. Findings reveal that when designed with clarity, fairness, and strategic alignment, performance-based incentives can improve motivation, strengthen work discipline, and support talent retention. However, challenges such as stress, output manipulation, and short-termism may arise, particularly in poorly governed or culturally mismatched environments. The role of internal control, corporate governance, and non-financial performance indicators is highlighted as essential to shaping employee behavior and preventing incentive-related burnout. This review contributes to existing literature by integrating motivational theories with practical considerations, emphasizing the contextual dynamics of incentive effectiveness. Recommendations are offered for future research to examine longitudinal impacts, cultural moderating factors, and digital performance infrastructures in incentive governance

Abstract

This study explores the evolving role of digital transformation in shaping management control systems (MCS) by synthesizing recent literature on technological integration, organizational adaptation, and control effectiveness. Drawing from a qualitative descriptive review of academic and practical sources, the study identifies key enablers such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, IoT, and data analytics that improve planning, monitoring, and decision-making. It also highlights major challenges including data overload, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, digital literacy gaps, and cultural resistance. Framed within the broader paradigm of Industry 5.0, the findings suggest that successful digitalization of MCS requires not only infrastructure readiness but also strategic alignment, behavioral readiness, and adaptive human capital. The study contributes by offering a structured lens for understanding how organizations can navigate the paradoxes of digital innovation and control. Recommendations for practice and future empirical inquiry are also discussed

Abstract

This review explores the dynamic interplay between environmental uncertainty, organizational strategy, and multinationality in shaping the design and implementation of management control systems (MCS). Amid rapid technological disruption, regulatory complexity, and globalization, organizations must adopt adaptive, real-time control frameworks to remain competitive and resilient. Strategic postures—particularly analyzer strategies—require a dual balance of flexibility and control to manage complexity across diversified operations. Multinational firms face additional challenges due to cultural divergence, regulatory fragmentation, and currency risks, all of which necessitate context-sensitive and integrated MCS design. The review also integrates behavioral dimensions such as employee engagement, cybersecurity awareness, and governance structure into the control discourse, highlighting the growing relevance of non-financial indicators. Drawing on contemporary literature, this study contributes both theoretically and practically by offering a multidimensional understanding of how control systems must evolve to address strategic, institutional, and digital complexity in global environments
