Abstract

This study investigated the role of citizenship education as a vehicle for nation building: perspective of Nigeria citizens. The study was guided by four objectives and also answered four research questions. The study used social constructivist theory propounded by Lev Vygotsky in the mid 20th century. The study employed a cross-sectional survey research design targeting Nigerian citizens, including students, civil servants, public servants, policymakers, business people, parents, politicians, and traditional rulers. A sample of 400 respondents was selected through stratified sampling to enhance representativeness, precision, and reliability, particularly for studies on citizenship education and nation-building. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire developed by the researcher, comprising demographic questions (Section A) and 30 items under four subheadings on a four-point Likert scale (Section B). Content validity was ensured through expert review, and reliability was confirmed via split-half method, yielding a reliability coefficient of 0.87. Data collection was conducted online via Google Forms, and analysis was performed using descriptive statistics through mean and standard deviation computed in SPSS version 25.0. The analysis revealed that citizens have various and varying perception towards nation building and the study also identify corruption, tribalism, political instability, ethnic sentiments, and religious conflict as significant challenges to nation-building in Nigeria among others. The study recommended among other things that, Nigerian government and educational institutions intensify efforts to integrate comprehensive citizenship education into all levels of the educational curriculum. And the curriculum should emphasize national unity, democratic values, and the importance of inclusiveness in governance.

Abstract

A rich interplay of astronomy, religion, and mythology is reflected in the naming of days across cultures, providing insights into how societies organized time and perceived the universe. This study focuses on Ethiopia's distinctive calendar and religious influence while examining the cultural importance of weekday naming customs in other countries. The goal is to scrutinize how astronomical observations and antiquated customs from Mesopotamia, Egypt, Asia, and Ethiopia combine to influence modern timekeeping. This study tracks the development of day-naming customs throughout multiple civilizations by analyzing historical documents, linguistic trends, and religious writings using a comparative cultural analysis approach. The findings demonstrate that while many cultures, including Ethiopians, name their days after solar or lunar events, religious beliefs also play a major role, particularly in Ethiopian Orthodox Christian traditions. Day naming is a valuable tool for tracking time and a representation of cultural identity, according to the study, which finds that day name is heavily influenced by mythology and religion. It is suggested that conventional timekeeping methods be preserved via digital preservation and teaching and that interdisciplinary study be encouraged to delve deeper into these relationships.

Abstract

This study examines viewership of Korean films among Nigerian undergraduates. It took a descriptive survey of undergraduate students across various universities in Southwest Nigeria. The sample frame was narrowed down to mass communication undergraduates in six universities cutting across Lagos (Lagos State University of Science & Technology; NOUN-Ikorodu campus), Ogun (Christopher university) and Ondo (Adekunle Ajasin University- Akungba Akoko; Wesley University) States, respectively. While serving as an exploratory study, it was aimed at measuring the level of viewership and interest in Korean movies and, identify their preference for Korean and Nollywood movies. The researchers used the survey method of convenience sampling technique where link to a 15-item online questionnaire was shared through WhatsApp platforms to the select universities. Findings from the study revealed that Nigerian undergraduates watch Korean drama a lot. The study also found that, though many Nigerian youths enjoy and prefer Korean movies to Nollywood movies, there is a reasonable number of the youths who still prefer Nollywood movies. Therefore, the study concluded that the rising interest in Korean movies among Nigerian youth may not be harmful to their life. However, there is concern of addiction and craze for Korean beauty products. The researchers, therefore, recommend that Nigerian youths be sensitised on social media and on television, regarding the danger of getting obsessed with Korean beauty products as they try to look like the casts in Korean movies.

Abstract

The arrival of the internet has opened a new vista and opportunity for everyone to send messages to a wide, large, dispersed, anonymous, and heterogeneous audience, which is traditionally the duty of an organization. In this case, the situation has become a “one-to-many model”, and more so, the internet has triggered the development of social media; a platform where users meet to interact, receive and share information. In this direction, this study examined the influence of social media on newspaper patronage among lecturers in University of Nigeria Nsukka. The study is anchored on Technology Acceptance Theory and Media Richness Theory. The study adopted the survey research method because of its ability to investigate problems in realistic settings. The total population of lecturers in UNN is 2889 while the sample size is 340. A multi stage sampling technique was adopted for this study using cluster sampling and simple random sampling. Face validity was adopted for this study. The method of measuring reliability adopted for this work was the Test-Retest Method. Based on the findings, the study discovered that a large number of respondents use social media for information purposes as against the little number of those who do not access social media. The findings indicate that most of the respondents rely on social media for news very often. The study also found that there are factors that lead to accessing social media for use. From the findings, it is not out of place to conclude that the news ecosystem will continue to evolve just as distributed content will become commonplace. News organizations will have to struggle for relevance in the digital landscape.

Abstract

Social media has become an indispensable aspect of modern life since it enables the distant creation of material for the purposes of amusement and information exchange, facilitating quicker and easier information sharing in Nigeria and around the globe. Through social networks and online communities, social media, as computer-mediated technology, promotes the development and exchange of concepts, awareness, professional interests, information, and other forms of expression. In Nigeria, the Covid-19 outbreak ushered in a digital age of first-ever marketing. During that time, citizens used social media to raise awareness among the public and demand action from the government to stop the spread of the virus. Within this conceptual context, the postulation of Technological Determinism theory serves the study goal. The study used secondary data to generate information on the subject matter. These sources provided concrete context for the thematic area of analysis. To interrogate the literature, a content analysis of secondary data was conducted. This made it possible to assess the body of knowledge in order to determine its applicability, consistency, and replication. It was established that customers used to rely on more traditional media, including radio and television, which included comparatively fewer and more reputable news sources. Consumers today are exposed to online information sources (the Internet), which was created to spread information and shape public opinion on topics by dictating what information is made available. The study concludes that the way that real-time audience participation has led to crowd sourcing content, which reflects the effects of rapidly evolving digital technology, online behaviors, and newsgathering techniques that has transformed journalistic practice as a result of social media. Members of a network can now communicate globally as a result of web-based applications, which facilitate the spread of fake information.

Abstract

This study critically examines the trajectory of United States policy during the presidency of Donald J. Trump (2017–2021) by analyzing his public statements through the lens of critical discourse analysis (CDA). Unlike traditional studies that focus on institutional outputs such as legislation or executive orders, this research foregrounds presidential rhetoric as a key instrument for articulating and shaping national policy. Drawing from 50 selected speeches, interviews, and tweets, the analysis reveals consistent rhetorical patterns reflecting themes of nationalism, protectionism, securitization, and polarization. The study categorizes Trump's discourse into five policy domains: foreign policy, economic policy, immigration, national security, and crisis communication. Within each domain, the research identifies how language was strategically employed to frame threats, mobilize support, delegitimize opposition, and justify controversial policy moves. The findings underscore the centrality of language in governance, demonstrating how presidential discourse acts as both a symbolic and operational force in shaping public perception and political direction. This article contributes to interdisciplinary conversations in political communication, discourse studies, and policy analysis, while offering a model for understanding how populist rhetoric redefines leadership and democratic norms in the digital age.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of 21st-century life and is playing a crucial role in foreign language learning, especially in improving students' English proficiency. This article highlights AI’s transformative role in delivering personalized learning experiences, intelligent tutoring, gamified environments, language learning applications, and automated assessments. These tools adapt to individual needs, provide instant feedback, engage learners interactively, and enhance language skill evaluations, leading to greater student engagement and autonomous learning. While AI offers many advantages, potential challenges and issues in its implementation must be considered. How can Artificial Intelligence be utilized to transform English language learning/teaching by offering diverse learning opportunities and improving the educational experience for both students and teachers? In Madagascar, the importance of English learning and teaching is increasing as various centers and institutions strive to promote the language. A survey conducted in July 2024 with 50 engineering students from the University of Vakinankaratra and 10 students from the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Antananarivo shows high receptiveness to AI in language learning, with 90% of participants demonstrating a strong understanding of its role. Additionally, surveys from 12 English teachers in Antananarivo revealed that 75% of them recognize the benefits of AI for both teaching and learning. These findings underscore AI's expanding role in English education, its positive influence on language acquisition, and its potential for enhancing teaching methods.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) as a therapeutic intervention for individuals suffering from drug, gambling, and pornography addictions. Recognizing addiction as a complex interplay of cognitive distortions, emotional dysregulation, and maladaptive internal narratives, this research employs a mixed-methods design combining quasi-experimental pretest-posttest analysis with phenomenological inquiry. A total of 45 participants from three Indonesian rehabilitation centers underwent either NLP-based therapy or standard counseling over six weeks. Quantitative results from the Addiction Severity Index (ASI), Cognitive Distortion Scale (CDS), and Language Use Assessment (LUA) revealed statistically significant improvements in the NLP group across all addiction types. Participants exhibited reduced cravings, greater emotional regulation, and shifts in self-narration from passive, deterministic language to agentic, self-aware expressions. Qualitative findings further underscored the therapeutic value of NLP techniques such as submodality shifts, reframing, anchoring, and timeline therapy, which helped participants reprogram internal triggers and traumatic associations. The study concludes that NLP effectively addresses the neurocognitive and linguistic dimensions of addiction, facilitating sustained behavioral change. Its adaptable, experiential, and non-pharmacological nature makes it a promising complement to existing treatment modalities. Further research is encouraged to explore long-term effects and broader clinical integration of NLP in addiction recovery.

Abstract

This study explores the grammatical tone pattern in Ùhànmì, a speech form that belongs to a sub-group of Edoid language family spoken in Ìṣùà-Àkókó of Òǹdó State, Nigeria. The study employs qualitative research method. Data collection was carried out using Ibadan 400 word- list, and was also modified to include sentences in the speech form. The data was sourced from native speakers of the language whose ages range between 50 and 70. The informants were asked questions and their responses in the speech form were recorded, translated and transcribed for accuracy. The study adopts the framework of autosegmental-phonology for its analysis. In the study, specific areas are examined with a view to shed light on the tone system of the speech form. The areas that are investigated include the basic tones in the speech form, functions of tone, and tonal processes in the speech form. Findings from the study demonstrate that Ùhànmì operates four basic tone levels; these are high, mid, low and falling tones. Tone is a unique feature in Ùhànmì, quite distinct from segmental feature. The study reveals that these tones distinguish meaning of segmentally identical words. The study also shows that tones play a distinctive grammatical function in present and past tense. Tonal processes such as tone simplification, tone raising, tone elision, and tone polarization are observed in the speech form. The research is motivated by the need to prevent the speech form from extinction. The study also stems from the missing gap in the knowledge as there is a paucity of publication on the speech form. The research contributes to knowledge in the field of phonology.

Abstract

The Theatre of the Absurd emerged as a significant post-World War II movement that profoundly questioned traditional narratives and structures in drama, reflecting the existential philosophy of the era. The movement, largely attributed to the works of Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, and Jean Genet, explores the absurdity of human existence, characterized by the collapse of conventional meaning in both language and action. Consequently, this work provides a detailed analysis of the origins of the Theatre of the Absurd and postcolonialism. Its philosophical influences, particularly theatre of the absurd from existentialist thought as articulated by Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, and its impact on contemporary theatre. Postcolonialism is also an essential field of academic inquiry that delves into the multifaceted ramifications of colonialism and imperialism on cultural, political, and economic landscapes. It scrutinizes the enduring effects of human dominion and exploitation over colonized populations and territories. Emerging as a pivotal intellectual framework, postcolonial theory endeavors to unravel the intricate layers of colonial governance and its aftermath, shedding light on the complexities and repercussions therein. By interrogating power dynamics, cultural hegemony, and socio-economic disparities, postcolonialism strives to unveil the enduring legacies of colonial rule, fostering a deeper understanding of historical injustices and contemporary global dynamics. However, this work brings some instances of absurdity in Bode Ojoniyi’s works on A Visit to a Graveyard and Samuel Becket’s Waiting for Goddot. In addition, this work looks into some postcolonial plays by Tunde Fatunde’s No Oil Boom & Sweat and Blood, Wole Soyinka’s Death and the King Horseman and Ahmed Yerima’s The Trials Of Oba Ovonramwen.
