Abstract

The imperativeness of contextual nuances to textual meaning fixations has largely remained incontrovertible among scholars across various disciplines, though what counts as context may remain debatable. This paper explored the application of the relevant aspects of Lawal’s (2003) pragmatic theory to foreground the contextual inevitability to meaning processing of the treaty-based legislative text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights document of 1948 as adopted by the United Nations. The research adopted a qualitative approach of analysis with a view to experimenting the applicability of language-based theory of pragmatics to the explication of legal-based text. The research showed that legal texts, as products of linguistic deployments, are not only subject to the context of human conditions, but are also amenable to the application of context-based theory of natural language. It was revealed that the linguistic deployments in any communicative legal text is a function of non-linguistic factors of context such as sociological, historical, psychological, social and cosmological situations of the human parties to the ensuing legal contracts under the circumstance

Abstract

The Betawi language, which is the indigenous language of the original inhabitants of Jakarta, is currently in a precarious state due to rapid advancements and changes within the city's social and cultural landscape. This creates an urgent need for robust and effective strategies to conserve this linguistic heritage. The concern is rooted in the fear that the extinction of the Betawi language would result in the failure to transmit valuable Betawi traditions, technology, cultural norms, and customs to subsequent generations. Such a loss would signify the decay of a rich and unique civilization. This study is designed to assess the current health and vitality of the Betawi language, drawing upon the disciplines of Social Semiotics, Demography, and Sociology for its methodological framework. Rather than relying exclusively on quantitative data, this research employs a qualitative approach to capture the subtleties, nuances, and specific preferences related to the language's use and significance. The study's findings point out that the Betawi language is in an even more vulnerable state now than it has been in the past, and this decline has severe ramifications for the Betawi community. Despite these challenges, educational interventions show promise to aid in the preservation of the language. Going forward, it is imperative to develop a well-rounded strategy for the preservation of the Betawi language that involves collaboration from a variety of stakeholders across different sectors

Abstract

Naming is an integral part of Yorùbá culture. It has an identity effects on the bearers. It is also believed that names control the actions and conducts of the bearers. The Yorùbá film producers are always careful and conversant with the fact that names given to their character must reflect in their characterization because orúkọ ọmọ ní í ro ọmọ ‘name has effects on a child’. The script writer, Mike Bamiloye, uses the name to draw a sketch of the attitudes, behavior and stature of the characters. This study therefore interrogates the socio-semiotic interpretation of names given to selected characters in Yorùbá Christian film, Àbẹ̀joyè. It also examines the names given to individual character, family and town. The paper concludes that the Yorùbá philosophical beliefs in names reflect in the selected Christian movie despite the fact that Christianity abhors traditional beliefs; the cultural aspects cannot be underestimated. The film, Àbẹ̀joyè, which serves as our data source is produced by Mount Zion Film Productions, Nigeria and Flaming Sword Film Productions, Texas in 2020-2023. Bamiloye’s unique and stylish way of naming characters show his dexterity in Yorùbá literature which always portrays and projects her culture through the creative way of assigning name to characters. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on Yorùbá Christian film and names among Yorùbá people

Abstract

This research aims to explore how the Betawi language impacts the speech patterns of adolescents in Jakarta. Utilizing qualitative approach and descriptive analytics, the study focuses on words within sentences that show Betawi interference, categorized into affixation, reduplication, composition, and acronyms. Key findings reveal significant Betawi influence in the areas of affixation and reduplication. For instance, words were often modified with Betawi-inspired prefixes, suffixes, or confixes, and a specific form of repetition, 'dwilingga,' was also evident. Interestingly, no Betawi interference was found in composition and acronyms. This suggests Betawi language has a selective influence on speech morphology, primarily affecting affixation and reduplication. The study provides valuable insights for future research on linguistic influences in multi-ethnic and multi-lingual settings like Jakarta

Abstract

The Betawi language, akin to many global languages, is on the brink of fading due to various factors, one being the evolution of civilization. This decline jeopardizes several facets of the native Betawi culture. Hence, efforts to maintain and preserve the Betawi language are imperative. The challenge lies in understanding the extensive scope of Betawi's linguistic and textual context. Thus, it's crucial to develop a targeted strategy that pinpoints the primary elements influenced by the degradation and endangerment of the language, particularly in the Betawi community. This study identifies these elements after extensive on-field research, spanning over a year with round-the-clock observations. The research found that a sociological qualitative analysis, especially focusing on society's social evaluation, is the most effective method. Consequently, five key areas were identified to analyze the repercussions of the language's decline: linguistic aspects, individual identity, inter-generational communication, knowledge transfer, and economic implications

Abstract

This study examines focus construction process in Àfá; one of the endangered languages of Nigeria. Àfá is spoken in Òkè- Àgbè of Akoko North west local government area in Ondo state. The data for research were gathered from informants who are the native speakers of the language. The sentences with focus paradigm designed by the researcher were dictated to the informants, and their responses were recorded both in short and long hand for purpose of analysis and transcription. The study adopts Government and Binding Theory for its analysis. The study identifies the various constituents that can be focused in the language. It is established that focus construction is derived through Foc that projects into Foc-P and takes IP as its complement. It is discovered that there are two probes in the syntax of Àfá focus: Foc and Emph. This research serves as a part of the documentation of an aspect of the syntax of Àfá.

After the comparison is accomplished, the researcher attempted to draw another comparison between these two translations and the original text based on House’s model of TQA. The research tended to find the mismatches of relativization in these two translations. Relativization includes who, which, and where and they refer to people, things, and places respectively. Relative clauses are the same both in Persian and English translations as a result; there are many mismatches, which happen in these kinds of translations. Abstract

This research aims to reveal in depth how the influence of the Betawi language influences the speech patterns of teenagers in Jakarta. Through a qualitative and descriptive analytical approach, this research explores words in sentences that show characteristics of Betawi language interference, such as affixation, reduplication, composition, and acronyms. The findings highlight the significant influence of the Betawi language, especially in the areas of affixation and reduplication. For example, words often undergo modification with the addition of Betawi-inspired prefixes, suffixes or confixes, while specific repetition patterns such as 'dwilingga' are also clearly observed. However, interestingly, no Betawi language interference was detected in the formation of compositions and acronyms. This shows the selective influence of the Betawi language on speech morphology, especially influencing affixation and reduplication. This study provides valuable insights for future research into linguistic influences in multi-ethnic and multi-lingual environments such as Jakarta. The implications of this research include a better understanding of language dynamics in linguistically heterogeneous societies, as well as the potential to enrich knowledge about processes of language adaptation and change in complex urban contexts. Thus, this research not only broadens understanding of linguistic phenomena in Jakarta, but also makes an important contribution to the field of linguistic studies.
