Abstract

Applied archaeological research, especially conservation in Indonesia, is really needed, considering that it is still relatively new, and historically, cultural heritage maintenance techniques have still focused on chemicals. The emergence of essential oils as conservation materials initiated by the Borobudur Conservation Center agency was the forerunner to the birth of scientific developments and research regarding care materials for cultural heritage and the use of local plants as inhibitors of the growth of biodeteriorating agents. The data in this paper focuses on a review of several studies that used local plants as conservation materials for cultural heritage made from brick, stone, and paper. Reflection in this developing long-term research is needed to create a protocol to use essential oils as a conservation material in every cultural heritage, which is a different material

Abstract

This article critically examines the role of digital heritage media in framing recent archaeological discoveries and government heritage policies within the framework of Cultural Resource Management (CRM). Using Moyang.co, an Indonesian Instagram-based heritage media platform, as a case study, this research analyzes how news related to new archaeological findings, research outcomes, and state interventions are communicated, questioned, and negotiated in the public sphere. Employing qualitative content analysis of selected Moyang.co posts published between 2024 and 2025, this study applies CRM perspectives emphasizing values-based management, public archaeology, and participatory heritage governance. The results demonstrate that Moyang.co functions not merely as an information outlet, but as a critical mediator that connects archaeological discovery with issues of management responsibility, policy transparency, and stakeholder inclusion. By consistently situating discoveries within broader governance and conservation contexts, Moyang.co challenges state-centered heritage narratives and highlights gaps between policy formulation and on-the-ground management. This article argues that digital heritage media has become an integral yet under-recognized component of contemporary CRM, particularly in contexts where archaeological discoveries are rapidly publicized while management responses remain slow, contested, or opaque.

Abstract

Bali is known as the island of a thousand temples, but is it true that only Hinduism has grown and developed there? In fact, various relics of different religions can be found, especially in North Bali. In the era of the kingdom, North Bali once had a renowned harbor. There was a strong connection between the harbor, various activities, and encounters among people of diverse ethnicities, religions, and nations. This article focuses on the distribution of archaeological remains closely related to religion in Singaraja. Singaraja, the capital of the Kingdom of Buleleng, later became an afdeling and eventually the capital of the Sunda Kecil. Implicitly, the writing of this article also obtains results from existing archaeological traces and provides an identity to Singaraja as an multicultural city, that is not only rich in culture but also rich in elements of various religions which can be used as an educational resource.

Abstract

A museum is one of the institutions that has an important role in preserving the cultural heritage of a community. The existence of a museum not only functions as a place to store historical objects but also as an information center, a learning medium, and a means of cultural recreation for the community. This study aims to understand the history of the establishment of the Bharugano Wuna Museum, the development of the Bharugano Wuna Museum, and its role in preserving the culture of the Muna community in Muna Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. This research uses a historical research method which includes the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data sources were obtained through interviews with museum managers, direct observation at the research location, as well as documentation studies of various written sources related to the Muna museum and culture. The research results show that the Bharugano Wuna Museum was originally a traditional Muna house built in 2017 and was then converted into a museum in 2018. This museum plays an important role as a center for cultural information, a medium for learning history, a facility for preserving cultural heritage, as well as a cultural tourism attraction in Muna Regency. In addition, community participation in contributing to museum collections shows the collective awareness of the community in preserving and maintaining local culture. Thus, the existence of the Bharugano Wuna Museum becomes one of the strategic efforts in maintaining the cultural identity of the Muna people while introducing regional cultural heritage to the wider public. Abstract

This article examines the potentials and constraints of utilizing Selokan Mataram as a heritage tourism resource in Special Region of Yogyakarta. As a cultural heritage structure with historical, social, technological, cultural, and educational significance, Selokan Mataram demonstrates considerable potential for development as a heritage-based tourism destination. However, its primary function as an active irrigation system presents challenges for tourism utilization and management. This study aims to identify these potentials and constraints and to formulate preliminary management strategies that support both heritage conservation and tourism development. The research employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical method through a literature-based study by integrating values-based heritage management and the 4A tourism framework (attraction, amenity, accessibility, and ancillary services). The findings indicate that Selokan Mataram possesses strong tourism appeal as a living cultural landscape characterized by historical narratives and a functioning irrigation system. Nevertheless, its tourism readiness remains limited due to environmental degradation, infrastructure deterioration, inadequate facilities, and the absence of tourism-oriented institutional management. Therefore, the development of Selokan Mataram should be conducted gradually through environmental improvement, infrastructure enhancement, and institutional strengthening to maintain a balance between tourism utilization, heritage conservation, and its primary irrigation function.

Abstract

Post-1945 events in Korea and the Korean War (1950–1953)’ constitute a pivotal chapter in East Asian history, profoundly shaping the region's political, social, and security landscape to this day. The end of the Japanese occupation in 1945 resulted in the division of the Korean Peninsula into two spheres of influence: North Korea under the Soviet Union and South Korea under the United States. Diverging ideologies in these regions subsequently ignited the Korean War in 1950. Various historical sites associated with these events remain extant, serving as vehicles for preserving the public's collective memory. This study aims to identify sites linked to post-1945 Korea and the Korean War and to analyze how historical information can be developed and applied at these locations. A historical research method with a qualitative approach utilizing literature reviews and documentation was employed. The findings indicate that sites such as the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), Panmunjom, the War Memorial of Korea, Imjingak Peace Park, and the United Nations Memorial Cemetery hold significant historical value as educational resources. Developing historical information through interpretive media and digital technology can enhance public understanding of modern Korean history.

Abstract

Industrial heritage sites in Indonesia often reflect the continuity of colonial infrastructures within contemporary urban landscapes. The PT Garam warehouse in Sosromenduran, Yogyakarta, represents one such example as a colonial industrial structure that remains active in the present as a form of living heritage. Despite its historical significance, the building has not been officially designated as a cultural heritage site, making it vulnerable to functional transformation and potential demolition. This study aims to examine the social dynamics between the warehouse and the surrounding community and to explore the heritage narratives constructed by various stakeholders. This research employs a qualitative approach through field observation, interviews, and archival study method that were framed within industrial archaeology and cultural landscape theories. The findings indicate a shift in the social role of the warehouse from an open and socially integrated space into a more restricted and institutionally controlled environment, contributing to increasing social distance between the community and the site amid urban development and gentrification. Despite its significant historical, social, and cultural value, the absence of formal recognition and limited community involvement pose challenges to its preservation. Therefore, this study highlights the importance of inclusive heritage management to ensure the sustainability of industrial heritage within an evolving urban context.

Abstract

The Pañcabrahmā Inscription is one of Indonesia's cultural heritage artifacts that possesses significant historical, archaeological, and educational value. Despite its importance, its potential as an educational resource has not been fully utilized. At the same time, the rapid development of digital media, particularly YouTube, has created new opportunities for disseminating knowledge and raising public awareness of cultural heritage. This study aims to develop a comprehensive narrative that interprets the messages embedded in the Pañcabrahmā Inscription and highlights its historical significance during the Ancient Mataram Kingdom. Furthermore, the research explores the use of YouTube as a digital platform to communicate these historical narratives and examines its long-term potential as a bridge for connecting broader audiences with the history of the Ancient Mataram Kingdom across past, present, and future generations. The findings indicate that audiovisual presentations are capable of conveying the historical background, inscriptional content, cultural values, and social context of the Pañcabrahmā Inscription in a more engaging and accessible manner than conventional text-based media. Moreover, YouTube facilitates wide-reaching, interactive, and sustainable dissemination of educational content, thereby contributing to improved cultural literacy, particularly among younger audiences. Nevertheless, the educational effectiveness of such content depends on the quality of its presentation, the accuracy of the information provided, and appropriate communication strategies. Therefore, collaboration among scholars, archaeologists, cultural heritage institutions, and digital content creators is essential to produce reliable and engaging educational materials. This study concludes that YouTube offers an innovative approach to supporting the preservation and dissemination of knowledge about the Pañcabrahmā Inscription while strengthening public understanding and appreciation of Indonesia's cultural heritage.

Abstract

In Old Javanese tradition, inscriptions were used as a mark of honor or to commemorate particular events. Inscriptions constitute an archaeological resource that makes an important contribution to the reconstruction of past historical events. This study aims to analyze the content of the Renek Inscription and its potential as a source for history education. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with literature review as the data-collection technique. This study positions the Renek Inscription as a foundational primary source for reconstructing the local history of Pasuruan during the fourteenth century reign of Hayam Wuruk, demonstrating that the region functioned as an active center of regional administration, land tenure law, and juridical resolution rather than a peripheral area. Beyond supplying verifiable historical data on administrative structures, ancient toponyms, and land disputes under the authority of Sri Wijayarajasa, the inscription holds significant pedagogical value for history education. Its alignment with the Phase E curriculum for tenth grade enables its use as a concrete, place-based case study, effectively bridging historiographical research and secondary education to teach Hindu-Buddhist acculturation through contextual local wisdom.

Abstract

The conservation of cultural heritage requires not only the protection of the physical remains of archaeological resources but also the preservation of their archaeological contexts and the diverse values associated with them. The Klanceng Site in Jember Regency, East Java, contains megalithic remains, including batu kenong and dolmens. Changes in land ownership have led to the relocation of several megalithic remains from the Klanceng Site to the Duplang Site, potentially diminishing the contextual value of these remains. This study aims to formulate a conservation strategy for the megalithic remains of the Klanceng Site based on a Values-Based Heritage Management approach integrated with Cultural Resource Management. The research employed direct observation and a literature review, with an analysis of the site's condition, archaeological context, heritage significance, conservation issues, threats, and conservation needs. The findings indicate that conservation efforts need to balance the physical protection of archaeological remains with the preservation of their archaeological contexts and heritage values. The proposed strategies include pre-relocation documentation, technical conservation, the protection and arrangement of archaeological remains, interpretation, digital documentation, scholarly publication, and collaborative management involving government authorities, academics, local communities, and heritage conservation institutions. This approach is expected to support the sustainable and participatory management of the megalithic remains from the Klanceng Site while maintaining their archaeological context and associated heritage values.
