Abstract

The YouTube Auto-Translation (YAT) feature represents an innovation in translation technology development. This feature allows for translating songs into other languages by displaying subtitles. The present research aims to investigate the application of translation techniques in translating the song Janji Setia by Tiara Andini using the YAT feature. By analyzing the translation techniques used, it is possible to identify the tendencies in methods and ideologies of translation. The present research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a product-oriented translation approach. Data is collected through listening and note-taking techniques, then transcribed into written form. The researcher listens to the song’s version in Indonesian and records it along with its English subtitles. Data analysis involves data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The findings indicate that the YAT feature employs nine translation techniques in translating the lyrics of Janji Setia into English. These techniques are established equivalence, linguistic amplification, compensation, reduction, amplification, adaptation, discursive creation, and literal translation. Based on the translation techniques used, it is evident that the method and ideology of the YAT feature in translating song lyrics are oriented towards the target language with a domestication ideology. This research enriches the understanding of how translation techniques, methods, and ideologies are applied in translating song lyrics using the YAT feature.

Abstract

The phenomenon of code-switching occurs in people's speech both through conversation and text. One of them is found in a YouTube video. This study aims to analyze the types and functions of code-switching found in the utterances of host and guest stars in Boy William's YouTube video entitled "Episode 1: Livy dan Vior Ribut Besar". In conducting this research, the methodology chosen is a qualitative descriptive method that analyzes the type and function of code-switching by watching the video multiple times, taking notes, and classifying the types and functions of code-switching. The theory used in this research was proposed by Poplack (1980) to analyze the different types of code-switching. While the theory proposed by Apple & Muysken (2005) is used to analyze the function of code-switching. The results showed that there were 3 types of code-switching found in the host and guest star's conversations in the video. The types of code-switching consist of tag switching, intra-sentential switching, and inter-sentential switching. All types of code-switching found amounted to 144 data with intra-sentence switching being the most dominant type with 121 data, and the least dominant type is tag switching with only 6 data. In this study, there are five functions of code-switching. The most dominant function is the referential function with 48 data and the least dominant function is a directive function with only 1 data.

This study is descriptive qualitative research, the content analysis is used as a method to identify and analyze the reduction techniques in movies and the translation accuracy in reducing subtitles in the movie. The result findings are the language unit translated by deletion are 79 data (68.69%), concision 34 data (29.56%), and implicitation 2 data (1.73%). The most dominant technique is deletion. The total of accurate translations is 91 data (79.13%) then the total of less accurate and inaccurate translations is 19 data (16.52%) and 5 data (4.34%). Abstract

Comprehending the theory of speech acts is very important in communication because everyone needs to understand each other. Communication might involve a lot of interactions containing expressive speech acts, especially in the entertainment world. This research aims to identify the types of expressive speech acts and to describe the function of each type of expressive speech act in DharMann’s serial show on YouTube. This research is classified as qualitative descriptive research. The data of this research were utterances that contain expressive speech acts found in the DharMann’s channel videos. Collecting data was collected by transcribing the English subtitles of DharMann’s videos, classifying the type of expressive speech acts, and the last is coding the data. Furthermore, the data analysis technique was based on Kreidler’s (2013) classification of expressive speech acts. The collected data were classified based on the types of expressive speech acts. After that, the functions of each type were described based on the pragmatics contexts. The result described the five types of expressive speech acts used by the characters from DharMann’s videos, such as attitude, apologizing, praising, thanking, and congratulating. Attitude functions to make the interlocutor understand what the speakers feel. Apologizing functions as a form of self-acceptance for a mistake that has been made. Furthermore, praising functions to make the person being praised feel comfortable and happy while thanking functions to show gratitude and respond to statements made by the speaker. Then, congratulation functions as a form of appreciation for someone's achievement. The most dominant type of expressive speech act was attitude. This fact strengthens the theory which states that expressive speech acts are used to express feelings related to psychological conditions. Congratulating is rarely found because the contexts related to one’s achievement are limited. Through expressive speech acts, the speaker's sincerity is conveyed so that the listener can believe in what the speaker has said. In general, expressive speech acts are used on the serial show to trigger viewers’ emotions as a part of entertainment.
