Abstract

The advance of technology has eased human’s work in almost all field of jobs including in the field of translation. The traditional translator fully used their translation skills in transfering the messages of original language to the targeted language. Nowadays, by the existence of translation technology, translator could pose as a reviewer oft he translation product done by the translation machine. One of the media which serves automated translation is YouTube. YouTube auto translation is analyzed in this research by looking at the probloms which might occur when audience accessed it. This is a qualitative research which try to explain the nature oft he data descriptively. The data are taken from Johnny Harris‘ YouTube video „Why Indonesia is always Erupting“. Thirtheen data of possible problems occur in YouTube auto translation are explained in result and discussion section oft he paper.

Abstract

What people think about Superman is that he was not real. There was no one as strong as Superman in the world. However, some people believe that what matters about Superman is he cares about everyone in the universe without exception, without judgment. The article aims to elevate Superman’s values to human existence. The research focuses on the character of Clark Kent in Zack Snyder’s two movies entitled Man of Steel. Clark initially used his powers covertly to help people and prevent or thwart disasters. He is valuable to human’s existence in the universe. The theory that is used to support to the analysis is Nietzsche’s super human version, the Übermensch in English means Beyond-Man, Superman, Overman or Superhuman. It is the concept of Nietzsche’s philosophy. Nietzsche’s thought on human philosophy directs us to fully love the life and position humans as superhuman. The research design that is taken is qualitative research. There is one literary approach that meets the analysis, that is, archetypal approach. The finding of the research is that Clark Kent as the representation of Übermensch is a human that sees himself as a source of value. Human who has reached Übermensch is a person who always says “yes” to everything and is ready to face challenges, who has an attitude of always affirming his life.

Abstract

This research aims to describe fashion and feminism in the film The Devil Wears Prada. This research aims to understand the picture of fashion in the world of work and explain the lifestyle changes experienced by the female character, Andy. This research analyzes fashion can express self-confidence and even social class. In this research, the researcher uses Ebunoluwa's theory about feminism. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The research method also uses two approaches, the feminist and sociological approaches. The results of the analysis show that fashion is depicted as an important thing in the film The Devil Wears Prada and the impact of Andy's change into a fashionable woman. Fashion in this film can show a person's values and social class. Andy's new appearance is also balanced by her ability to fulfill all of Miranda's job demands, which she can do perfectly. So not only has her appearance changed, but Andy is also more competent in her job.

Abstract

Phatic Speech Acts are communication strategy that is a characteristic of a culture. Phatic speech acts have an important role in the communication process in Indonesia as the efforts made to demonstrate social identity and maintain social rapport in society. Therefore, this research discusses the types and function of phatic speech acts found in the daily conversation of English-speaking Indonesian students. The data source for this research is English-speaking Indonesian students at Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University, Madiun Campus. This research data was collected by using the non-participation observation method with the recording, note- taking, and role-play techniques. The findings of this research are a classification of 11 types of phatic speech acts consisting of (1) Addressing, (2) Expressing Empathy, (3) Gossiping, (4) Complimenting, (5) Giving Remarks, (6) Advising, (7) Offering, (8) Requesting, (9) Inviting, (10) Mocking, and (11) Swearing. The functions of phatic speech acts are: (1) Expressing hospitality, (2) Showing attention, (3) Making conversation more interesting, (4) Please others, (5) Showing concern, (6) Expressing empathy (7) Showing politeness, (8) Expressing social attachment, (9) Expressing solidarity, (10) Mocking, and (11) Building intimacy. The phatic speech act of addressing is the type of speech act that is most frequently found. On the contrary, the phatic speech act of complimenting is rarely used. The embodiment of the phatic speech act of addressing is dominantly carried out by students in daily conversations since it reflects the cultural identity of Indonesians that is friendly and warm. The phatic speech act of complimenting is not used frequently because of its conditional in nature. The complimenting requires the speaker to have an advantage that is worthy of praise, even though the praise is not sincere. The benefit of this research is to know that in daily communication, phatic speech acts could be implemented for smooth communication.

Abstract

The Hunger Games is a trilogy of novels that were made into movies. The Hunger Games are related to social life, such as class conflict and materialism, this is interesting to examine in literary criticism using a Marxist approach. The topic of this research is Marx's materialism in the movies entitled Hunger Games trilogy. This research analyzes materialism related to class conflict, there are two class conflicts, namely, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. This research focuses on two problems, namely, (1) the depiction of the bourgeoisie and proletariat in the movie Hunger Games sequel and (2) the effect of being bourgeoisie and proletariat toward the main characters. This research uses the theory of Marx (1998). This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. The results found a depiction of the bourgeoisie as powerful, wealth, and leadership. Meanwhile, the proletariat is a laborer or worker, poor, and powerless. This research finds the effects of being a bourgeoisie, namely, being powerful and oppressor while the proletariat becomes obedient and oppressed. Therefore, the aim of this research is that readers can learn about Marxism, especially about materialism related to class conflict namely, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the positive politeness strategies used in the comment section of Alinakim's TikTok account. The objectives of this study are to identify the types of positive politeness strategies used and to explain the purpose of those strategies. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The data were collected from the comment section of Alinakim's TikTok account. This study aims to analyze the positive politeness strategies used by users in the comments section of the @Alina Kim account on TikTok by utilizing the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987). This study method used in this study is qualitative research. The data and source of data are collected from the comment section of Alinakim's TikTok videos in December 2022. The findings of this study show that the dominant positive politeness strategies used in the comment section are intensifying interest and giving compliments. These strategies aim to enhance the hearer's positive face, making them feel good about themselves. These strategies aim to create a positive and supportive environment, which is essential in building a sense of community and belonging. The conclusion, the positive politeness strategies used in the comment section of Alinakim's TikTok , particularly the strategies of intensifying interest and giving compliments, are effective in creating a positive and supportive relationship. The findings suggest that positive politeness strategies play a crucial role in the construction of social relations in online communities because they help to establish rapport, create an atmosphere of mutual interest, promote discussion, strengthen groups, and maintain politeness in online interactions. Keywords: Positive Politeness Strategies, Comment Section, TikTok.

Abstract

Social deixis is one of the pragmatics studies. The study of social deixis is also found in digital comics. Therefore, this research discusses the use of social deixis to identify the types of social deixis and their functions in the Lore Olympus Webtoon. This research is classified as qualitative descriptive research. All of the data of this research were taken from the conversations in the webtoon entitled Lore Olympus which contain social deixis. The result of this research shows that there are two main classifications of social deixis used in the Lore Olympus Webtoon namely relational social deixis and absolute social deixis. Relational social deixis includes four sub-classification types, 1) speaker and referent; 2) speaker and addressee; 3) speaker and bystander; 4) speaker and setting. Then, absolute social deixis consists of 1) authorized speaker; and 2) authorized recipient. Furthermore, the result of this study shows that there are three functions of social deixis namely to express politeness and respect, to express intimacy, and to identify authority. In general, understanding social deixis means learning more to show respect, and politeness between the speakers and the addressee by mentioning the specific title or call based on the context

Abstract

The aim of this research was to describe the metaphoricalconcepts of themetaphorical expressions in Taylor Swift’s album Folklore and album Evermore,and to analyze the similarities and differences between the metaphoricalconceptsin Taylor Swift’s album Folklore and those in album Evermore. This research wasqualitative. The data of the research were in the form of words, phrases, andclauses containing metaphorical concepts. The data collection technique was document analysis. The result of this research showed the most dominant metaphorical concepts are Happy is Up, Anger is Fire, Sad is Down, and Love is a Story. Some similarities in terms of metaphorical concepts were also found inthose two albums, namely Anger is Fire, Time is Money, Love is a Story, and Sad is Down. This research confirms the previous research that metaphor cannot be avoided and systemic, that orientational metaphors can be dominant in some researches, and that metaphors can be used to talk about a given topic in manyways.
