Abstract

Emotional isolation is one of defense mechanism which is used to protect ones fromemotional distress by stop communicating with people. It can be triggered by socialisolation, infidelity, abuse, fear of abandonment and other trust issues whereemotional bonds have been broken. Hence, this paper aims to analyze Philip Carey’ssuffering from emotional isolation in the novel W.S. Maugham’s Of Human Bondage.The theory used is psychoanalysis theory: personal principles and defensemechanism  by Sigmund Freud. These contains about conscious and unconsious sideof human and the application in their behavioral life. The research design used inthis paper is qualitative method. The technique of collecting data is library researchand in the form of written text. As for the approaches are psychological approachand sociological approach. In the end of this paper, there are results that are shownin Philip’s behavior. These are as following; becoming self-conscious, fail to controlhis most burdensome bondage: passion, and wondering about his life: seekingfreedom from every bondages.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out experience of racism toward Jim Harris in All GodsChillun Got Wings, and to find out effects of racism toward Ella Downey. This research wasdescriptive. The data of this research were words, phrases, clauses, or discourse containingracism in the drama All Gods Chillun Got Wings. The source of the data was document, namelya drama entitled All Gods Chillun Got Wings written by Eugene O’neill’s. The technique ofcollecting the data was document analysis. Moreover, psychological approach and sociologicalapproach were applied to decide the strategy in analyzing the experience of racism and effects ofracism found in this drama. The analysis shows that (1) experience of racism toward Jim Harris.Furthermore, (2) the effects of racism toward major character Ella Downey. The conclusion isBlack people and white people cannot live together. White people always think black peoplecannot be a lawyer. If black people and white people marry they will get bad treatment and theywill be isolated by the society.

Abstract

This research is about loneliness depict in Ella Wheeler Wilcox poem entitle Solitude. There aretwo purpose of this research, the first is to figure out speaker’s social struggle revealed bysituational irony in the poem, and second is to find out the imagery which illustrate the struggleof the speaker’s. The researcher used library research to analyze the analysis. The main data ofthis research taken from a poem entitled Solitude written by Ella Wheeler Wilcox in 1883. Sometheories used to analyze the data are theory of Irony, theory of Imagery and theory of WomanStruggle.

Abstract

Pronunciation is one of the most important indicators of speaking and listening skill. It canchange the meaning of words and sentences when they are mispronounced. The features ofpronounciation can be devided into two such as segmental and supra segmental features.Segmental features consist of vowels and consonant while supra segmental features consist ofstress, intonation, and connected speech. The research was conducted at Madiun StatePolytechnic. The participants are the students of englis study program B class consisting of27 students in the academic year of 2018/2019. The Method of this research was RepetitionDrill of Audio-lingual Method. The aims of this research are; 1)to know that Repetition Drillof Audio-lingual Method can improve the students’ pronunciation of English vowels and 2) todescibe the process of teaching and learning activities of english pronunciation throughRepetition Drill of Audio-lingual Method. The qualitative and quantitative data were used inthis research. Qualitative data were taken from the scores of the pre-test of 27 students fromB class and all cycles of the research. The qauntitative data were taken through theobservation, interview, and questionnaire. Based on findings, discussions, and conclusions,The Repetition Drill of Audio-lingual Method is recomended to improve the english vowelspronunciation of the Second Semester of English Study Program of Madiun State Polytechnicin the Academic Year of 2018/2019.Keywords: Repetition Drill, Audio-lingual Method, Pronunciation, Vowels.

Abstract

Abstract Based on the result of preliminary study, it was found that students’ reading ability of second graders ofEnglish Department was considered low. This condition can be seen as the result of the pre-test in whichmost of the students scored lower than 68, since the institution in which this research took place gradedthe range score of 68 as “Good”. Therefore, an alternative method in reading activity was introducednamely SQ4R. SQ4R is a reading strategy which consists of 6 steps; survey, question, read, recite,relate, and review. There were 27 students involved in this research. The data were gathered from theresult of test in each Cycle, observation and FGD. The result of the research which was conducted intwo Cycle shows that there was significance improvement of students’ reading score in which 23 out of27 students (85%) of the students could score 68.  Keywords: reading, reading skill, SQ4R

Abstract

The  objectives  of  this  study  entitled  Feministic  Responses  Toward  PatriarchalSociety in Jane Austen Emma are (1) To describe patriarchal culture in Jane AustenEmma (2) To describe feministic responses toward the patriarchal culture in JaneAusten Emma (3) To describe the effects of Emma’s feministic point of views. Thewriter used document analysis to analyze the analysis. The main data is taken fromnovel  of Emma.  Some  theories  used  to  analyze  the  data  are Character,  Setting,Patriarchal Society, and Feminism. Moreover, the approaches used in thisresearch are sociological approach and historical approach. For the result, theresearcher finds Emma’s feministic response toward patriarchal society, the effect ofEmma’s feministic point of view after seeing this patriarchal society EmmaWoodhouse would have been breaking this rule. Emma decide that without men shewas already have anything such as wealth and social status. She even marrying Mr.Knightley which is based on love.

Abstract

This research discussed the depiction of Norse mythology and personification in M.L. Kiser’s“Tree of Life”. The aims of this research were to give a depiction of the Norse mythologyabout tree of life and to analyze the personification dealing with mother nature of Norsemythology in M.L. Kiser’s “Tree of Life”. In finding the data, library research was appliedas the technique of collecting the data. The data consisted of ideas related to Yggdrasil innorse mythology and personification that were depicted in M.L. Kiser’s poem. The theory ofmythology, Norse mythology, Norse legend of the tree of world, humanity, mother andpersonification were applied in this research. Furthermore, the approach that were usedwere mythological approach, ideological approach, archetypal approach, structuralapproach, and formalist approach. The result of this research was the whole stanza tellingthe act of Yggdrasil from the beginning of the world until the world fell into two contradictivesides. Moreover, it also told the act of Yggdrasil as a mother who took care of her children.In conclusion, by analyzing this poem, the researcher knows that Yggdrasil as the tree of lifegave life to all over the creatures.

Abstract

This research aimed to (1) find out the qualities of woman as characterizationportrayed in the main female character, Juana and (2) explain how they influenceKino’s character development in John Steinbeck’s The Pearl. To analyze the data,this research used qualitative method. The data of the research were theexpression related to (1) the qualities of woman as characterization portrayed bythe main female character, Juana, and (2) how they influence Kino’s characterdevelopment in the work of John Steinbeck’s The Pearl. The results of thisresearch show the qualities of woman portrayed by the main female character,Juana and how they influence Kino’s character development. Juana, is portrayedas a woman having characterization such as being responsible, strong, loyal andcaring, responsive (including the action she does) and so forth.The qualities ofwoman possessed by Juana as her characterization in the novel seems to givemore courage and motivation, convince him to do more as a husband, and offersuch a strong intuition to deal with problems so that he could consider andreconsider the action he is about to take.

Abstract

The research aims to discuss the kinds of swear words and thepurposes that consist in The Wolf of Wall Street. The objective of the research are todivide the swear words into groups based on their kinds and describe the purposes aswhy the swear words is used. The main theories that are used in this study are slangand swear words. The method of this research is descriptive research and thetechnique of data collecting used is library research. The result of the research are,there are many kinds of swear words that can be found based on Hughesclassification and the purposes as why people swearing is based on partridgeclassification. Based on Hughes classification there are seven kinds of swear words,swear words related to sex, swear words related to excrement, swear words relatedto name of animal, swear words related to personal background, swear words relatedto sexual activity, swear words related to taboo, religion, or oath, the last is swearwords related to mental illness. The result for the reasons as why people using swearwords are expressing anger, shock, disappointed, excitement, happiness, seriousness,confused, and proudness.
