Abstract

Senior college students face various academic demands, particularly the writing of their theses, which can trigger negative emotions such as stress, anxiety, and frustration. Emotional regulation skills are essential for adaptively managing emotional experiences, while difficulties in regulating emotions can increase the risk of loneliness. Loneliness arises from the gap between expected and actual social relationships. Previous research has generally focused on young adults in general and has not specifically examined senior students in Medan from various universities who are currently completing their theses. This study fills that gap by examining the relationship between emotional regulation and loneliness in this local context as a novel contribution. The purpose of this study is to determine the profile of emotional regulation, the profile of loneliness, and the relationship between the two among senior students in Medan. This study contributes theoretically to the advancement of psychology and practically to students, universities, and future researchers. The study’s limitations include generalizability restricted to the city of Medan, a correlational design, the use of self-report measures, and the examination of only two variables. The method used was a quantitative correlational study involving 355 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The instruments, the Emotional Regulation Scale and the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 were analyzed using Spearman’s Rho. The results indicate that emotional regulation tends to be high and loneliness is moderate, and there is a significant negative correlation of moderate strength (r = −0.425; p < 0.001). Emotional regulation accounts for 18% of the variance in loneliness. These findings support the theories of Gross, Perlman, and Peplau, as well as Weiss. From a practical perspective, there is a need to improve students’ emotional regulation skills and to implement psychological counseling programs at universities

Abstract

The rapid growth of social media has transformed how individuals communicate and disclose personal information, particularly through Instagram's second account, which provides a more private environment for self-expression. However, empirical studies examining the relationship between the Big Five Personality and self-disclosure among second-account users remain limited, especially among university students in Medan, Indonesia. This study aimed to analyze the influence of personality on self-disclosure while contributing to cyberpsychology research concerning digital self-presentation and online communication. The research was limited to university students in Medan who actively use a second Instagram account, with Big Five Personality as the independent variable and self-disclosure as the dependent variable. A quantitative correlational design was employed using purposive sampling, involving 355 respondents. Data were collected through valid and reliable four-point Likert-scale questionnaires and analyzed using simple linear regression with IBM SPSS Statistics 25. The results demonstrated that personality had a positive and significant effect on self-disclosure (R = 0.771; R² = 0.595; β = 0.695; p < 0.001), explaining 59.5% of the variance in self-disclosure. Furthermore, Openness to Experience, Extraversion, and Neuroticism significantly influenced self-disclosure, whereas Conscientiousness and Agreeableness did not. This study fills the empirical gap regarding second-account Instagram users in Medan and offers novelty by integrating the Big Five Personality Theory with DeVito's self-disclosure framework in the context of private digital spaces. Overall, personality is a significant psychological determinant of self-disclosure behavior and provides theoretical and practical implications for promoting responsible social media use among university students

Abstract

Failure to gain admission to a public university (PTN) often causes psychological stress among high school graduates in Medan, such as disappointment, low self-esteem, and a decline in motivation. Resilience is a crucial ability for adapting and bouncing back, while a growth mindset, the belief that abilities can be developed through effort is believed to play a role in fostering that resilience. This study aims to examine the relationship between a growth mindset and resilience among private university (PTS) students in Medan who failed to gain admission to a PTN. Theoretically, the results are expected to enrich the literature in Educational Psychology and Positive Psychology; practically, they can serve as a reference for psychoeducational programs designed to strengthen students’ growth mindset and resilience. The study’s limitations include a subject population restricted to active 2025-cohort students at private universities in Medan who had previously failed to gain admission to public universities, the use of purposive sampling, a cross-sectional correlational design, and the measurement of only two variables via self-report scales. The method used was a quantitative correlational approach employing Pearson’s product-moment correlation on 361 respondents. The instruments consisted of the Growth Mindset Scale (18 items, α = 0.918) and the Resilience Scale (32 items, α = 0.951). The results showed a strong, significant positive correlation (r = 0.788; p < 0.05), with a growth mindset accounting for 62% of the variance in resilience. The majority of respondents fell into the high category for both variables. The conclusion confirms that the higher the growth mindset, the higher the students’ resilience. The novelty of this study lies in its specific focus on a population of private university students in Medan who are experiencing a transition due to failing to gain admission to a public university, a group that is rarely studied in an integrated manner within this context

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the achievement of cognitive competence related to SETS on the subject of Colligative Properties of Solutions from visionary learning and the SETS approach of class XII students. To increase the achievement of students' affective achievement in the material of Colligative Properties of Solutions after learning through SETS visionary chemistry learning for class XII students. This research is an experimental study with the aim of knowing the SETS (Science, Environment, Technology and Society) vision of chemistry learning on student learning outcomes. The design used was "Randomized Control Group Pretest Posttest Design. The results of the study were differences in the differences that occurred in learning outcomes in the control class using the conventional model and learning outcomes in the experimental class. In the experimental class there was an increase in classical learning outcomes of 69.50%, while in the control class there was only an increase of 54.76%. So it can be concluded that the use of the model is more effective by 14.74% than the use of the conventional model. The conclusion is that there is a significant influence in the application of SETS Visionary Chemistry Learning on the Colligative Properties of Solutions on the Achievement of Cognitive and Affective Competencies
