Antibacterial activity of bacteria isolated from earthworm (Pheretimasp.) gut against Salmonella typhiand Staphylococcus aureus: in vitro experiments supported by computational docking. Biodiversitas 23: 1125-1131. Bacteria have a diverse ecology niche as the effect of a long evolutionary process. They can live along with other organisms as endosymbiont. Research into endosymbiont bacteria began because of their ability to increase host resistance, especially to pathogens. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial ability of endosymbiont bacterial isolates of earthworms Pheretimasp., Bacillus brevis, and Bacillus choshinensis that inhabit Pheretimasp. were isolated.The isolates were grown on tryptic soy broth media for 24 hours. The isolates were then purified using tryptic soy agar and biochemically tested to ensure both isolates are endosymbiotic bacteria. Antimicrobial activity was tested using agar diffusion methods in pathogenic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella typhi. Amoxicillin and chloramphenicol were used as positive controls. The inhibitory test results showed that incubation for 15 days effectively assessed pathogenic bacteria growth inhibition, marked by the largest inhibition zone (21.32 mm for Salmonella typhi and 16.88 mm for Staphylococcus aureus). They were very effective at inhibiting Salmonella typhiand Staphylococcus aureus growths.Endosymbiotic compounds’ had a potential as antimicrobial. The in silico test supports the inhibitory test, which concluded that endosymbiont isolates can be an antimicrobial characterized by low-binding affinity values (-8,6 on tyrocidine) on molecular docking analysis.

Abstract. Firdaus N, Supriatna, Supriatna J. 2022. Ecosystem services research trends in Indonesia: a bibliometric analysis. Biodiversitas 23: 1105-1117. Among the world's mega-biodiversity countries in the tropics, Indonesia has experienced the most severe deforestation in recent decades. It is alarming that the rate is potentially disrupting the future provision of ecosystem services. On the other hand, there is a paucity of research on ecosystem services in Indonesia, and its current state is unknown. This study provided an overview of ecosystem services research trends in Indonesia from 1998 to 2020 using bibliometric and science mapping analysis of 298 published works from the Scopus database. Since 2013, publications on the topic have increased and grown exponentially, with environmental science dominating the subjects, followed by agriculture and biology, and the social sciences. Biodiversitas and Ecosystem Services are the most prolific journals for publishing results, while Science and Ecological Economics have the most citations. Being the most productive in publications, Indonesia and the United States are also engaged the most in research collaborations. Ecosystem services research in Indonesia is closely linked to biodiversity, deforestation, and oil palm. Furthermore, oil palm, sustainability, and land-use change are promising topics to address in the coming years. This study suggests that the dynamics of ecosystem services research in Indonesia call for further developments in improving the quality of impactful research through interdisciplinary approaches, international collaboration, and the engagement of diverse stakeholders and policy-makers related to the field, to increase the benefits of sustainable ecosystem services in the future.

Abstract. Khan K, Listyanto T, Soraya E. 2022. Moisture content, density, and allometric model for estimating above-ground biomass of Peronema canescens trees in the private forest. Biodiversitas 23: 1132-1139. The objectives of this study were to quantitatively measure the above-ground biomass (AGB) of Peronema canescens Jack species in a private forest in Indonesia using a destructive method and to develop an allometric model for the same. Six trees were sampled for above-ground biomass and their components (stem, branch, and leaves) were weighted and measured. Regression analysis was used for developing the allometric equation by using predictor variables of diameter at breast height (DBH), squared diameter at breast height together with height (DBH2H), and diameter and height separately (D & H). The average AGB of six sampled trees was 0.264 (26.38%) tons per tree. The fit allometric equation AGB = 0.254(DBH2H)0.886 was developed for estimating above-ground biomass of P canescens and it had 99.2% accuracy. The implications and recommendations were provided based on the results of the study.

Abstract. Sari CP, Santosa SHMB, Marsono D. 2021. A portrait of the ecological clusters in the urban fringe area of Surakarta, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 670-679. The population growth in Surakarta has led to agglomeration. To fulfill human needs, Surakarta has seen some major land-use changes across decades. The availability of natural resources and ecosystem services is very important for the sustainability of life. Biodiversity index-based area management is one of the best ways. Cluster methods will facilitate the planning, implementation and subsequent management of an area. This study divides the urban fringe of Surakarta into 48 ecological units. The biotic analysis of biodiversity index calculations is used to assess all ecological units. The value of the biodiversity indices is the basis for forming clusters. From the statistical analysis, 5 clusters were formed based on the level of similarity. The majority of the clusters were located in Karanganyar District. Cluster 3 was the cluster with the most members and the most value of the index of biodiversity. Cluster 2 had only 2 clusters. The range of biodiversity index in each cluster was not much different. The richness of the species in each cluster was in the medium-high range (tree level 0.945-4.500, saplings 0.908-4.889 and seedlings 0.638-4.440). The diversity of the species was at a moderate level with the tree level diversity index value of 2.044-2.290, saplings 1.610-2.294, seedlings 1.557-2.291 and was at a moderate level with the tree level index evenness value of 0.735-1.421, saplings 0.641-1.412, seedlings 0.730-1.645. In each cluster, the condition of the biodiversity was quite good and able to support the function and services of the ecosystem of urban areas and urban fringes. There was no dominance of plants, and the types were still diverse for the ecosystem stability. The development of Surakarta was faster in the south and the north. Biodiversity in eastern Surakarta was found to be more effective in supporting the ecosystem services of Surakarta City.

Abstract. Susanti R, Christijanti W. 2022. Effects of production system on the gut microbiota diversity and IgA distribution of Kampong chickens. Biodiversitas 23: 1082-1090. Native chickens (Kampong chickens) are poultry in Indonesia that is raised using a traditional production system. This study aimed to analyze the differences of the Kampong chicken production system (extensive/E and semi-intensive/SI) on the diversity and abundance of gut microbiota and the distribution of IgA. Each sample of Kampong chickens was slaughtered, then their thoracic and abdominal cavities were dissected, and their intestines were collected. Furthermore, the intestinal tissue was processed to make histological preparations for immunohistochemical analysis of IgA. Gut contents of 25 g were taken aseptically and used for next-generation sequencing (NGS) and GC-MS analysis. The results showed 12 bacterial phyla in the intestines of SI and E chicken. E chickens had a higher abundance and diversity of microbiota than the SI chickens. The phylum Firmicutes dominated the E and SI chickens' gut microbiota (>50%). SI chickens have a higher Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio than the E chickens. The SIgA distribution showed an IRS score of 4 (moderate), both in E and SI chickens. It was concluded that the production system affects the intestinal microbiota's abundance and diversity but not on the intestine IgA of Kampong Chickens. This study highlights that based on the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, the semi-intensive system is more suitable for Kampong chicken meat and eggs than the extensive system.

Bioprospecting three newly isolated white-rot fungi from Berbak-Sembilang National Park, Indonesia for biodecolorization of anthraquinone and azo dyes. Biodiversitas 22: 613-623. Extensive use of textile dyes without proper wastewater treatment may jeopardize the water environment. In this study, bioprospecting newly isolated white-rot fungi from Berbak-Sembilang National Park for decolorizing four synthetic dyes was investigated. A total of 108 wood-decaying fungi were screened by using selective media, resulting in three isolates as the most promising fungal strains (BRB 11, BRB 73, BRB 81). BRB 81 had the best ability to decolorize 91.4% of AB129 and 77.8% of RB5 within 96 hours while the highest removal of RBBR and AO7 was performed by BRB11 around 60% and 37.6%, respectively. The enzymatic degradation was assumed to involve the decolorization process as laccase activities were observed with the highest around 116 UL-1. Based on molecular identification, these three fungal isolates were identified as Phellinus noxius BRB 11, Ceriporia lacerata BRB 81, and Leiotrametes menziesii BRB 73, respectively. In conclusion, P. noxius BRB 11, L. menziesii BRB 73, and C. lacerata BRB 81 could be used as biological agents in textile wastewater treatment and thus, it is important to conserve them as a part of the biodiversity within the local biosphere reserve.

Abstract. Tsaniya SH, Wijayanto N, Wirnas D. 2022. An evaluation of an agroforestry system with 2-year-old sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) and shade-tolerant upland rice. Biodiversitas 23: 1159-1166. Sengon is tree species that is often cultivated with upland rice in agroforestry systems. The main obstacle of rice development in agroforestry systems are competition between plants for sunlight and nutrients. 2-year-old sengon has a wider canopy and longer roots, increasing competition between sengon and rice. Planting upland rice in this condition requires strategies, such as selecting shade-tolerant rice varieties and rice plantations inside bamboo. This study aimed to evaluate the agroforestry system of sengon and shade-tolerant upland rice when the sengon plants were two years old and evaluate the effectiveness of using bamboo to reduce the competition between sengon and upland rice. This research was conducted from November 2020 to April 2021 in the Cikabayan Forest, IPB University, Bogor, West Java. This study one-factor completely randomized design to analyze the growth of sengon provenances and a three-factor completely randomized design with three replications to analyze the growth and yield of rice. The first factor was the cultivation system (Solomon F1 agroforestry, Solomon F2 agroforestry, local sengon agroforestry, and rice monoculture), the second factor was the planting method (using bamboo and without bamboo), and the third factor was rice varieties (Rindang 1 Agritan and Rindang 2 Agritan). The results showed that Solomon and local sengon in this study had a growth that was not significantly different and had low diversity. The results also showed that 2-year-old sengon spacing 3 m x 1.5 m caused great shade and high competition, leading to low rice yields.

Abstract. Paga B, Pudyatmoko S, Wijayanti LR, Yuda P, Sulaksono N. 2021. The habitat suitability of Timor friarbird (Philemon inornatus) in Western Timor Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 703-713. Timor friarbird is an endemic bird to Timor Island. The population of this bird has been declining due to land cover changes as a result of massive anthropogenic pressures. This study aimed to assess the suitability of Timor friarbird's habitat by using 12 ecogeographical variables. The sources of data included Sentinel 2A satellite imagery and remote sensing-based algorithms. The bird's presence was analyzed by using a combination of line transect with point count methods. Ecological Niche Factor Analysis (ENFA) model was applied to obtain habitat suitability value as well as coefficient of marginality (M) and specialization (S). These results showed that the Timor friarbird needs a habitat with a different value from the average of the entire habitat. High specialization value indicated that the species has a narrow ecological niche. Factors influencing habitat suitability included the distance from roads, the presence of mangroves, primary and secondary dryland forests, rivers, and low-density settlements. About 75% of the study area is classified as unsuitable habitat, and only 22% is suitable with range classes of suitability from marginal to optimal habitat. Areas with less anthropogenic pressure on the land cover will be preferred more by the bird. Improvement of unsuitable habitat and protection of suitable habitat, therefore, will be the most important strategy for Timor friarbird conservation.

Multispecies pelagic fisheries have contributed as the main fishery production for the Bali Strait fisheries. To maintain the sustainability of the fish stock, sets of harvest control rules (HCRs) have been introduced in terms of fishery management. Conventional single-species surplus production models have been used extensively to determine the future annual allowable biological catch (ABC). However, they may not technically apply to multispecies fishery management. The feedback harvest control rule HCR has been validated and applied to maintain the catch variability of the multispecies fishery. This study aims to technically compare the use of the surplus production model and the feedback HCR in the ABC estimation. The catch and effort data series of the three dominant species from 2010-2019, collected from Pengambengan and Muncar fishing port, were analyzed by two HCRs, the Schaefer surplus production model and the feedback HCR to obtain the ABC. As a result, the Schaefer model showed a higher estimation of ABC than the feedback HCR because the feedback HCR may reflect the recent historical catch consistent with precautionary principles. The feedback HCR showed an initial step toward sustainably managing multispecies fisheries while dealing with unavailability in species-specific data conditions.

(Phyllanthaceae Martinov-Malpighiales), underutilized plant from Riau, Indonesia and its phytochemical study. Biodiversitas 23: 937-946. Baccaurea (Phyllantaceae) is one of underutilized plants in Riau Province, Indonesia. Our finding in some districts shows the variation of morphological characters of Baccaurea members. However, there is no detailed morphological study of these genera reported from this province. This study aimed to identify Baccaurea species from Riau and characterized their morphology, as well as, phytochemical contents. The specimens were collected from the field, documented and observed in detail their morphological characters. Phytochemical screening had been conducted using qualitative tests of a total of six secondary metabolites (alkaloid, terpenoid, steroid, tannin, flavonoid and saponin). A total of seven Baccaurea species were identified in this study. The main characteristic that can be used to distinguish each species are leaf characteristics (venation, size and shape), floral pattern and fruit characters. The phytochemical contents vary among the examined Baccaurea. Steroid and tannin are absent from all of examined specimens. Terpenoid is commonly found in all fruit parts of all specimens.  The result of this study provides the first detailed morphological record as well as phytochemical data of Baccaurea from Riau.
