Insecticidal activity of culture filtrates from liquid medium of Beauveria bassiana isolates from South Sumatra (Indonesia) wetland soil against larvae of Spodoptera litura. Biodiversitas 20: 2101-2109. The obstacle in utilizing entomopathogenic fungi to control pest insects in wetlands is the inability of their isolates to survive during the saprophytic phase due to the soil being very acidic. Therefore, the exploration of fungi being able to survive in the acidic soil was utilized in the acidic ecosystem. This study aimed to test the toxic activity of Beauveria bassiana culture filtrates from liquid medium at pH 2.5 and 6 against Spodoptera litura larvae. Total of ten isolates collected from South Sumatra, Indonesia was grown in liquid media at pH of 2.5 and 6 for six weeks. The result showed that the culture filtrate from liquid medium at pH 6 was more toxic against the larvae than that at pH 2.5. The mortality of the larvae at pH 6 reached 92%, while that at pH 2.5 it reached 13.33% only. The findings of present study revealed that the culture filtrate isolates of BPdR, BJgTs, BSwTd2, BSwTd3, BSwTd4, BKKPp2 from pH 2.5 media still caused high larvae mortality (6.67-13.33%). These seven isolates are superior due to their toxic nature at pH 2.5. Consequently, present study has increased the chances of success in utilizing these isolates for biological control in acidic ecosystems, such as peatlands, tidal lowlands, and freshwater swamps.

Short Communication: Diversity of plant species growing during fallow period of shifting cultivation and potential of its biomass for sustainable energy production in Mahakam Ulu, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2236-2242. Fallow period is a time gap, as long as 15 years, for improving natural soil fertility of land used for traditional shifting cultivation, in the tropical areas commonly used by Dayak People in Borneo Island. During this period, many biomass plant species naturally grow and develop a new forest vegetation community with shrub and medium trees, dominated by fast-growing pioneer species. In this study, we investigated the plant diversity in fallowed shifting cultivation area in Batu Majang Village, Mahakam Ulu District, East Kalimantan Province, followed by analysis of the suitability of wood characteristics for energy production. We classified the study area according to the age of fallow period as: 1-3 years, 4-6 years, 7-9 years and 10-15 years. We found 29 species among which 13 were identified as the top species according to the highest value for important value index. Potential wood biomass production increased from 3.01 m3 ha-1 to 399.62 m3 ha-1. V. pinnata and M. pearsonii showed the highest dominance which is present in almost all area based on age classification groups. Wood from V. pinnata achieved the highest calorific valueof18.00 MJ kg-1 whereas N. cadamba and M. sericea were in the second and third places with the value of 17.30 MJ kg-1 and 17.28 MJ kg-1, respectively. Therefore, V. pinnata was an important species among all other species observed because of high adaptability and high energy content. In addition, possible energy production at the end of the fallow period of 15 years was 2.92 GJ ha-1.

Identification of connectivity patterns through the larval dispersal dynamics is urgently needed to support the sustainable larval supply. Many studies on the larval coral distribution have been reported. However, no study of coral larval dispersal has been conducted in Karimunjawa. The purpose of this research was to build a model of coral larval dispersal in Karimunjawa waters. Modeling was carried out by using a 2-dimensional hydrodynamic current approach with a particle tracking module. The larval release was conducted during the full moon in the first transition period (April) and the second transition period (October). The larval source was assumed from around Sambangan waters. Modeling validation was done by comparing the model results to the direct of current measurements with Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The results of larval dispersal model showed that both the transition seasons I and II were similar in the direction of movement towards the west. This result indicated that currents, tides, and winds influenced the larval dispersal process. Also, the model results showed that Sambangan, Tengah, Cilik, Sintok, the west site of Karimun, Menjangan Kecil, and Menjangan Besar Islands were identified as the location of the larval settlement.

Distribution of Staphylococcus haemolyticus as the most dominant species among Staphylococcal infections at the Zainoel Abidin Hospital in Aceh, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2076-2080. The occurrence of Staphylococcus-related infections is emerging and might potentially harbor multidrug resistance leading to the major risks of hospital-associated infection. The study aimed to determine the dominant species distributed among Staphylococcus-related infections from clinical specimens and determine antibiotic resistance profile of the dominant species. The clinical samples were collected from inpatients and outpatients at the Zainoel Abidin Regional Hospital of Aceh, Indonesia during March 2017-March 2018. All clinical samples were mainly inoculated to plates containing blood agar followed by identification and determination of their antibiotic susceptibility using VITEK® 2 Compact. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test when appropriate to determine the independence of frequency distributions, and the tests were considered statistically significant at a P ? 0.05 on two-tailed. Of 693 Staphylococcus isolates found in the clinical specimens, Staphylococcus haemolyticus was the most predominant isolates with a total of 233 (32.2%), and it was identified with a high prevalence of methicillin-resistance (95.96%) termed as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus haemolyticus (MRSH). MRSH were found in the blood samples and ICU patients accounting for 64.1% and 55.61%, respectively. The resistance profile of MRSH isolates exhibited a high level of resistance (more than 85%) to a wide range of antibiotics, including beta-lactams, (first to the fourth generation) cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, carbapenems, and macrolides. This might be an alarming occurrence and require serious action to prevent MRSH dissemination of healthcare infections in the future.

Population and habitat use of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) and five ungulate species in Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary, Chachoengsao Province, Thailand. Biodiversitas 20: 2213-2221. This study on the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) population, habitat use and the diel activity patterns of elephants and five species of large even-toed ungulates was conducted between March 2017 and March 2018 in Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary, Chachoengsao Province using intensive camera trapping. Fifty-eight camera traps were deployed, adding up to a total of 4,463 trap nights and revealing 1,760 independent encounters. Six species of mammals were recorded, including the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) and five species of large even-toed ungulates; the gaur (Bos gaurus), the banteng (Bos javanicus), the sambar deer (Rusa unicolor), the wild boar (Sus scrofa), and the muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak). The abundance analysis reflected that the probability occupancy of the elephant was 0.92 (SE = 0.04); in dry seasons 0.97 (SE = 0.04) and in wet seasons 0.90 (SE = 0.83). The population of elephants within the study site of 87.95 km2 was within 79.51-334.15 individuals. The elephant age classes were identified as adult, sub-adult, juvenile, and calf with percentages of 77.85%, 5.71%, 9.28%, and 7.14%, respectively. The adult male to adult female sex-ratio was 1: 1.39 and the adult female per calf ratio was 1: 0.12. The percentage of the calf to adult female ratio was 9.17%. Maximum Entropy analysis revealed that saltlicks and artificial water sources were the environmental factors that had the most influence on the probability of occurrence of the elephant (all year). We found that the diel activity pattern of the elephants was strongly nocturnal (85% recorded between 18.00-05.59 hours). Temporal overlapping was seen between elephants and gaurs, bantengs and sambar deer in order. Suggestions for area management include improvement of water sources, salt licks, grassland management, and providing education, publicization, and strict control to decrease human activities within the protected area. There also should be continuous studies to monitor the population and the ecology of these species.

Abstract. Chursina MA. 2019. Convergent evolution of sexual dimorphism in species of the family Dolichopodidae (Diptera). Biodiversitas 20: 2480-2485. In this study, we investigated patterns of sexual dimorphism in four dolichopodid species namely Dolichopus acuticornis Wiedemann, 1817, D. longicornis Stannius, 1831, Rhaphium appendiculatum Zetterstedt, 1849, and R. caliginosum Meigen, 1824 that are exhibiting similar patterns of sexual dimorphism. Although they are distantly related, males of all these species exhibit similar sexual dimorphic characters in term of elongation of postpedicel. A comparison of variation made it possible to assumed that although sexual selection acts differently, all four species exhibited similar patterns of sexual dimorphism in wings and legs; females possessed relatively widened wing and elongated fore and hind femora than males. Cluster analysis for the morphometry data demonstrated that the differences between sexes significantly exceeds the differences between species. These results may reflect the presence of some conservative genetic structure of covariation among characters.

Abstract. Situmorang ROP, Kuswanda W. 2019. Network mapping in the development of elephant conservation center in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2858-2867. A project in the Aek Nauli Elephant Conservation Camp (ANECC) is being carried out to conserve Sumatran elephant handled by several institutions within the Ministry of Environmental and Forestry of Republic of Indonesia and other supporting stakeholders. A social networking analysis (SNA) had been carried out to analyze the social interactions of the stakeholders in the development of the ANECC. This research aimed at finding out the important actors in the network and describing at the social network gap in the development of ANECC objectives as conservation, and research, and ecotourism center. From the research, we found four institutions engaged in conservation, research, and animal health surveillance as the core actors and 19 other institutions as the periphery actors consisting of authorities, local government, businessmen, and local people. The study also found that the Environmental and Forestry Research and Development Institute Aek Nauli is the most influential actor in the network, and the National Planning Agency and Girsang Sipanganbolon Sub-district as the bridging actors who connect the supporting actors to the core actors. Conservation aspect is the most communicated in the network, followed by ecotourism, and research. Our research also found that conservation and research aspects have been handled by the appropriate institutions, however, ecotourism has not been handled by certain agencies responsible for the development of ecotourism. Hence, the study suggests that the core actors can consider binding cooperation with potential entrepreneurs on tourism around the site to develop ecotourism sector in ANECC.

Carbon stock assessment using forest canopy density mapper in agroforestry land in Berau, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2661-2676. In the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) program, remote sensing is the most important tool for measuring forest cover and carbon dynamic, including the utilization of software Forest Canopy Density (FCD) mapper. However, there have been rarely untested the accuracy of FCD applied in agroforestry landscapes to support carbon stock assessment compared to conventional field measurement data. This research was aimed to investigate the correlation between: (i) the value of FCD (%) and tree stand density (N/ha), (ii) the value of FCD (%) and basal area (m2/ha), (iii) the value of FCD (%) and total carbon stock (Mg C/ha), and iv) total carbon stock and percentage of canopy closure (%). Tree stand density, basal area, carbon stock and canopy profile were conventionally measured by trained members of local communities. The results of this study showed that the R2 between FCD and tree density was 37.7% (r = 61.4%), while the R2 between FCD and the basal area was 3.33% (r = 18.3%). The result of normality and heteroscedasticity tests showed that FCD was more accurate and precise in estimating the tree stand density model than the basal area model. Total carbon stock differed significantly (p<0.1) from tree density with R2 = 27.7% (r = 27.3%). Total carbon can be predicted using FCD with total carbon (Mg C/ha) = 13.005 + 0.826 FCD. Our findings suggest that FCD can be used as a new method to estimate tree density and total carbon stock cheaply, efficiently and accurately to support carbon stock assessment in agroforest practices. In carbon assessment, total carbon stock can also be estimated using canopy closure measurement.

Abstract. Mansyur, Karti PMH, Abdullah L, Husni A, Lestari P. 2019. Genetic diversity of mutant napiergrass using Expressed Sequence Tag Simple Sequence Repeat (EST-SSR). Biodiversitas 20: 2403-2409. Napiergrass is one of the tropical grasses which has a very important role in developing ruminant livestock, its productivity is high and its nutritional content is quite good. Plant breeding to produce new varieties that have better productivity continues. One of them is through mutation breeding and in vitro culture. The purpose of this research was to look at the genetic diversity among napiergrasses using the Expressed Sequence Tag Simple Sequence Repeat (EST-SSR). This study used 14 SSR molecular markers. The results showed that mutant DNA of napiergrass can be clearly amplified by all the EST-SSR primers used. The average number of alleles was 4.57, the average frequency of the main allele was 42%, and the average value of gene diversity was 0.66. While the PIC average value was 0.60. There were five markers that were very informative and have PIC values ??above 0.7, among others, namely ICMP3045, ICMP3018, PSMP2090, PSMP2209, and PSMP2019. Phylogenetic analysis shows that 37 numbers of napiergrass mutants split into two main clusters at a coefficient of 0.56. The first cluster consists of 26 lines while the second cluster consists of 11 mutants. The parent napiergrass is in the first cluster. There are two pairs of mutants that have the same diversity, namely R20-11 with R 20-20-3 and R100-1 with R100-3.

Estimating carbon stocks of three traditional agroforestry systems and their relationships with tree diversity and stand density. Biodiversitas 23: 6137-6146. One of the important sectors as a strategy for climate resilience and low carbon development in Indonesia is Forestry and Other Land Uses (FOLU) including the agroforestry sector. Carbon stock and tree diversity in an ecosystem are dynamic over time and still need to be investigated. This study was aimed: i) to estimate aboveground carbon stocks in the traditional agroforestry of Mount Halimun Salak National Park (MHSNP), in Kampung Birang and Kampung Merabu, East Kalimantan, as well as ii) to analyze the correlation between carbon stock with tree diversity and stand density in traditional agroforestry of Mount Halimun Salak National Park (MHSNP), in Kampung Birang and Kampung Merabu, East Kalimantan. The total plots were 75 plots (a plot size of 50x50 m), and carbon stock estimation was focused on pole and tree levels. The average carbon stock in the traditional zone of MHSNP, Kampung Birang, and Kampung Merabu respectively was 51.02 Mg C/ha, 96.25 Mg C/ha, and 82.17 Mg C/ha. The carbon stock in traditional agroforestry of all study sites was very significantly affected by the basal area (m2/ha) (p-val<0.05) with a strong correlation (r = 80% and 97%). The carbon stock was affected by stand density (p-val<0.1) with a very low correlation (r = 27.3%). The carbon stock was very significantly affected by total species (p-val<0.05). However, it had a weak correlation (r = 28.0%). In agroforestry systems, how to manage the agroforestry, socio-economic aspects, ecological site, and market are the main factor in species selection and species maintenance by landowners that indirectly influence biodiversity conservation effort and carbon stock value. The agroforestry system has the potential to become a target and priority location for Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 by providing non-timber forest products, which can avoid leakage in forest conservation efforts and carbon stock.
