Abstract

The research of tree species distribution along the environmental gradients in Lowland Tropical Rainforest Pananjung Pangandaran Nature Reserve had been conducted. The study aimed to elucidate the relationship between tree species distribution with ≥10 cm dbh and some measured environmental gradients, namely soil pH and moisture, soil depth, litter thickness, light intensity, altitude, slope, and the distance of plot from coastal line. A number of 125 of 10x10 m2 quadrats were established randomly in four transects. The results indicated that Rhodamnia cinerea was the species having the highest presence. Ordination technique using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) suggested that tree species were less evenly distributed along the measured environmental factors with Eigenvalue 0,387. Altitude was themost important environmental factor affected tree species distribution, soil moisture as well as light intensity.Key words: canonical correspondence analysis, distribution, lowland tropical rainforest, Pananjung Pangandaran

Abstract

Dysoxylum parasiticum (Osbeck) Kosterm. including into the tribe of Meliace. The society in Bali calls this plant with majegau. It gives a special characteristic for Balinese and has advantages in their religion. In Bali, it is more known as divine tree (kayu dewa), which able to be used for purified building. The objective of this research was to measure the mean annual increment of height, diameter and volume of D. parasiticum. Recognizing the characteristic of this plant is an important step to get information about the growth of majegau. Estimation of age harvest and also the conservation effort as one of effort to take care of its continuity. The results showed that highest heightincrement in XIVA garden bed, and the highest diameter increment in XVIIIA garden bed. The height increment is more optimal in the area with high light intensity (XIV A bed garden) and the diameter increment is more optimal in low light intensity area (XVIIIA bed garden). The increment of height is more influentially to create volume increment. The model showed that height and volume increment have higher R2adjusted value than diameter and volume (0.645 and 0.132, respectively).Key words: Dysoxylum parasiticum (Osbeck) Kosterm., mean annual increment, “Eka Karya”- Bali Botanical Garden.

Abstract

Litterfall production of mangrove forest study was carried out in the beach water of Sepi Bay, West Lombok, from July to October 2007. The collection of litter was done every 10 days, and then the litter was dried at 75oC to constant weight and separated into leaves, reproduction organs, and wood part components. The total mangrove litter fall average was 2.71 g/m2/day or 9.9 ton/ha/year, with the leaf, reproduction organs, and branch components being 87.56%, 11.33% and 1.54%. Contribution of Rhizophora mucronata litter fall was 1.48 g/m2/day, R. apiculata 0.49 g/m2/day, Sonneratia alba 0.48 g/m2/day, R. stylosa 0.25 g/m2/day, and Aegiceras corniculatum 0.01 g/m2/day.Key words: mangrove, litterfall, Sepi Bay.

Abstract

The island of Sulawesi has been highlighted as a globally important conservation area, across a range of evaluation criteria. Collection rates on the Sulawesi Island are the lowest among in Indonesia area. Taxonomic study also has been limited, with most experts reporting large numbers of undescribed species. The research of Araceae diversity in Sulawesi is subject which in general has not been studiedcritically. The main purpose of this research is concerned to inventory the diversity of Araceae genera. The exploration was conducted in each location used exploring method. The Araceae genera in Silui Mountain and Uluisimbone forest consist of 30 numbers, 24 species and 14 genera, including into 3 sub families (Aroideae, Monsteroideae and Pothoideae). Mostly Araceae were found at humid location, the river flows. Schismatoglottis calyptrata Zoll. & Mor. and Aglaonema simplex Bl. are dominant species for terrestrial Araceae, where asScindapsus spp. and Pothoidium spp. are dominant species for climbing Araceae.Key words: Araceae, Silui, Uluisimbone, Sulawesi.

Abstract

Study about tambra fish, Tor tambroides (Bleeker, 1854) or mahseer were conducted in Muller Mountain areas Central Kalimantan. The aims of study were to know status and structure of population, habitat types, and preferences. The methods are catch per unit of effort, visual, and experimental. The results were caught 29 tambra fish, consist of 4 males, 8 females, and 17 juvenile size; the population is rare; the habitat type were grouped to three groups; this fish more prefer to deep waters, the water quality was suitable for living of tambra fish.Key words: tambra fish, Tor tambroides (Bleeker, 1854), population, habitat types, preferences, Muller Mountain.

Abstract

Research was conducted in Kaliurang nature recreation forest area, in Gunung Merapi National Park, Yogyakarta. The research aim to investigate the proportion of aggressive behavior of monkeys [Macaca fascicularis (Raffles, 1821)] to tourists. Direct observation method was used to observe the monkeys behavior in the interaction to the tourists. And questioners were distributed to the tourists to know expectation of the tourists which related to the existence of the monkeys in that conservation area. Analyses of the interactions suggest thatmonkeys respond differentially to tourists according to the age/sex classes involved. Additionally, adult and subadult male monkeys participated in more aggressive behaviors than expected, while adult female monkeys and immature participated in such behaviors less than expected. These variations in interaction patterns between monkeys and tourists may have substantial implications for management issues and that the potential for gaining or reducing the tourists to visit in that forest recreation.Key words: monkey, Macaca fascicularis (Raffles, 1821), tourists, aggression; tourists-monkeys interactions.

Abstract

The research was conducted in Ciliwung River, from Bogor until Jakarta. The aims of this research were to (i) identify the species of phytoplankton were occupied in the Ciliwung River and (ii) determine the river ecosytem condition using ecological modeling by composition and distribution of abundance model. This research was conducted in two period sampling which on July 2005 (1st period) and August 2005 (2nd period). The river ecosystem was devided into three segments, which covered 10 stations, namely: Cisarua, Gadog, Kedung Halang (Segment I), Kelapa Dua, Kalibata, Kampung Melayu, Guntur (Segment II), Pejompongan, K.H. Mas Mansyur, and Teluk Gong (Segment III). The result on the first period obtained 4 divisions that consist of 41 species, such as 12 species from Cyanophyta, 25species from Chlorophyta, 4 species from Chrysophyta and 1 species from Euglenophyta. Thus, from the second period, obtained 4 divisions that consist of 45 species, such as 8 species from Cyanophyta, 28 species from Chlorophyta, 5 species from Chrysophyta and 4 species from Euglenophyta. The result of analysis on phytoplankton abundance distribution showed that, both on first and second periodsan appropriate model is Motomura Model.Key words: composition, abundance model, phytoplankton, Ciliwung River.

Abstract

The local people of Ujung Kulon use the leaves of screwpine (Pandanus odoratissimus L.f.) for their daily purposes,especially making mats. The people recognise two entities of pandanus/screwpine as two different taxa, the “pandan samak” and “pandan laut”. Both are identified here as belonging to P. odoratissimus. The two taxa are regarded closely related, in which the “pandan laut” is believed to be the wild type of the domesticated “pandan samak”. Its cultivated in Ciundil. Although P. furcatus Roxburgh and P. dubius Sprengel are also recognised, neither is used as source of mats.Key words: ethnobotany, pandan, Pandanus odoratissimus L.f., Ujung Kulon

Abstract

Thirty nine isolates of microorganisms were isolated from the nira (palm sap from inflorescence stalk of Corypha utan Lamk. or Borassus flabellifer L., laru (fermented palm sap) and their ability to produce amylase has been done. The result of screening showed that eight isolates were positive in the starch iodine test, but their amylolitic activities relatively lower. The amylolitic activities show that laru is not potential source of microbial amylases. In liquid media containing 2% soluble starch, three isolates of fungi (LG4, LMS1, and MI-1) produceamylase and reached a maximum activity at 3 days fermentation, with levels 56.31x102 , 46.78x102 and 41.49x102 U/mL (one unit activity is define as micromoles of glucose produce per mL per minute). Two yeast isolates which isolated from laru or kayu laru were showed their ability to ferment the gula aer and produce ethanol, CO2 and some organic acids, it were identified as Pichia anomala. The other bacterial isolates were identified as Bacillus licheniformis BL43, Chromobacterium sp., Lactobacillus sp., Micrococcus roseus (Staphylococcus roseus), and Bacillus coagulans, its show the lower amylase activities.© 2008 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS Surakarta.Key words: palm sap (nira), fermented palm sap (laru), amylase, fermentation, East Nusa Tenggara

Abstract

Galanga (Alpinia galanga L.) rhizome was known to inhibit the growth of pathogenic fungi. The antifungal substances of galangal rhizome were found from their volatile oil. The objectives of this experiment were to study the ethanol extract of galangal rhizome against the growth of filamentous fungi Fusarium moniliforme, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus terreus, and Aspergillus niger that produce mycotoxin, especially aflatoxin, based on biomass and colony area and to determinate minimum growth inhibitory concentration the extract of galangal rhizome. The extract of galangal rhizome was significant (p<0.05) effective against biomass of F. moniliforme and A. flavus. The extract of galangal rhizome however was significant (p<0.05) effective against colony area of F. moniliforme, A. flavus and A. niger. The minimum growthinhibitory concentration of extracts galangal rhizome against the growth of A. flavus, F. moniliforme and A. niger were 816, 1,682, and 3,366 mg/L repectively.© 2008 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: Aspergillus spp., Fusarium moniliforme, galangal rhizome extract, minimum growth inhibitory concentration
