Increasing plant salinity tolerance is a focus of research and industry since salinity and yield are of major concern to maximize medicinal and aromatic plant production in arid and semi-arid areas. Therefore, the present study aimed to decrease the harmful effect of salinity on Nigella sativa L plants by adapting them to saline soil stress through the use of Cobalt. The effects of saline irrigation water and cobalt on the vegetative growth characters [plant height (cm), leaf number (plant-1), branch number (plant-1), capsule number (plant1), herb dry weight (plant-1) and seed yield (plant-1)] and content of fixed oil, soluble sugars, proline, N,P,K and protein of black seed (Nigella sativa L.) plants were investigated. In these experiments, two factors were considered: saline irrigation water and Cobalt. The experimental design followed a complete random block design. The averages of data were statistically analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA-2) and the values of least significant difference (LSD) at 5%. Saline irrigation water decreased certain growth characters, fixed oil, protein and mineral content (N, P, and K) as saline irrigation water level increased. Saline irrigation water promoted the accumulation of soluble sugars and proline contents. The plants treated with saline irrigation water containing cobalt resulted in higher plant growth characters and chemical constituent’s values than those treated with saline irrigation water alone.

Qualitative and financial evaluation of public and private forest nurseries; Case study of southern Zagros forests, Iran. Nusantara Bioscience 6: 152-158. This study has examined the efficiency of two nurseries, private and public divisions, based on qualitative and financial evaluation in the Southern Zagros forests of Iran. To achieve this purpose, we selected two species including pistachio (Pistacia atlantica) and poplar (Populus nigra) in one year period. Results of qualitative evaluation showed that all produced seedlings by private nursery significantly had better features than the public one at a significant level of 0.05. Also, the results of financial evaluation showed that cost price of each poplar seedling at private nursery (0.734 $) was 19.6 times less than public one (14.4 $). The interest rate for pistachio seedling in private sector ranges from 1.9 to 2.2 $, while it ranges from 1.5 to 1.9 $ for poplar seedling. Such researches may help to improve management as well as financial and qualitative efficiency, especially in public nurseries. Future researches will be required to document other aspects of private management on nurseries in seedling products.

Mushroom can serve as food, tonic, and as medicine thus make people healthier, fitter and happier. They have a cracking potential for generating great socioeconomic impact in human welfare at local, national and international level. With the help of allied mushroom farming we can easily tackle the problem of food for growing world population; reduce environmental pollution by bioconversion of huge organic wastes into mushrooms; recycle huge quantity of organic wastes to mushroom crops, biofertilizers, and biogas; restore damaged environment by mushroom mycelia through mycoforestry, mycoremediation, mycofiltration and mycopesticides in a zero-emission fashion. They can be used to degrade radioactive industrial biocide wastes in an eco-friendly fashion. Since mushroom cultivation is an indoor agribusiness, it could have a great economic impact by generating employment, income and functional food requirements for rural people, especially in developing countries. How far mushroom cultivation can meet the functional food requirements; address the domestic food challenges, rising food prices and crisis vis a vis environmental sustainability will be thrust areas of this communication.

Nusantara Bioscience 6: 186-195. Immunosensors are affinity ligand-based biosensor solid-state devices in which the immunochemical reaction is coupled to a transducer. The fundamental basis of all immunosensors is the specificity of the molecular recognition of antigens by antibodies to form a stable complex. This is similar to the immunoassay methodology. Immunosensors can be categorized based on the detection principle applied. The main developments are electrochemical, optical, and microgravimetric immunosensors. In contrast to immunoassay, modern transducer technology enables the label-free detection and quantification of the immune complex. The analysis of trace substances in environmental science, pharmaceutical and food industries is a challenge since many of these applications demand a continuous monitoring mode. The use of immunosensors in these applications is most appropriate. Food chemists should take advantage of immunosensors in food and clinical diagnostics. There are many recent developments in the immunosensor field which have potential impacts. The future role of this technique in intra-laboratory, as well as bedside testing, will become even more important as the food laboratory is faced with increasing pressure to contain costs. Objective of this paper is to give a general overview of the possible application of immunosensors to the food analysis field.

The study of forest Hara Biosphere Reserve in coast of Persian Gulf and the importance of heavy metal accumulation; Case study: feathers of great cormorant. Nusantara Bioscience 6: 159-164. In recent years, concerns about the long term effects of heavy metals as environmental polluters have arisen, since considerable quantities of heavy metals have been released into the environment as a result of extensive human activities. Heavy metal has been determined as a serious threat to the stability of ecosystems. In this study, we examined the levels of zinc‚ copper‚ lead, and cadmium in the feathers of twenty great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo), collected from Hara Biosphere Reserve during November and December in 2012. The results revealed that the mean concentration of heavy metals in the feathers of males is significantly higher than females (P < 0.05). In addition‚ no significant difference was observed in heavy metal concentration between juvenile and adult birds. Moreover, according to the results, the high concentration of heavy metals in some samples indicated this fact that birds are potentially exposed to the risk of heavy metals in their habitat.

Emulsion stability and emulsifying ability are two important factors in food industry. Soy protein has the great of interest because of its amphilic structure. β-Conglycinnin and glycinin are main components in soy protein which can be used as emulsifiers in food processing. However, due to its size and molecular weight, the emulsifying ability of soy protein is limited. By chemical, physical and enzymatic modification, the emulsifying ability of soy protein can be improved. The addition of polysaccharides in emulsion is common. The interaction of polysaccharides and proteins are being discussed in this review. In some complex food emulsion, the function of soy protein molecules and emulsifier at the interface need to be investigated in the future study.

Abstract. Chitlange PR. 2014. Contamination of cell phones by pathogenic microorganisms: Comparison between hospital staff and college students. Nusantara Bioscience 6: 203-206. Cell phone (CP) is a long range portable electronic device. The cell phone is constantly exposed to arrays of microorganisms, making it a harbor and breeding ground for microbes especially those associated with skin. The adult human is covered with approximately 2m2 of skin with area supporting about 106 bacteria. To check whether the cell phone act as a vector for transmission of various pathogens, a potential study was carried out in Microbiology Department of Shri Radhakisan Laxminarayan Toshniwal College of Science, Akola, Maharashtra, India. Total of 20 cell samples was screened. Two parameters were considered: College students and hospital staff. The isolated bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas sp., Bacillus subtilis, Aerobacter aerogenes, Salmonella, Shigella, Streptococci, P. vulgaris were identified on the basis of morphological and cultural characteristics. The main aim of present study was to check the contamination by bacterial pathogens on cell phones and also to check role of cell phone for transmission of pathogens from person to person or not.

Nusantara Bioscience 6: 7-12. Tilia platyphyllos is one of threatened species of Caspian forests. Tissue culture techniques are applied for culture, regeneration and genetic resources preservation. Utilizing an accurate sterilization procedure is important to reduce the cost, time and energy. The aim of this present study was to provide optimization of in vitro sterilization protocol to obtain contamination-free cultures of T. platyphyllos. Explants were collected randomly from the best individuals of T. platyphyllos, which were located in Tooskestan forest of Gorgan, Iran. Results revealed that the optimum protocol for sterilization was when explants were exposed in pre-sterilizing solution of 600 mg L-1 ascorbic acid, 4 g L-1 captan fungicide and 5% commercial sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution (5% Cl activated) for 20 minutes and then explants were exposed in sterilizing solution containing 600 mg L-1 ascorbic acid and 10% sodium hypochlorite.

Abstract. Rahmanifarah K, Shabanpour B, Shaviklo AR, Aalami M. 2014. Leaching and heating process as alternative to produce fish protein powder from Kilka (Clupeonella cultiventris caspia). Nusantara Bioscience 6: 1-6. The effect of protein extraction procedures (leached mince and heated suspension) on selected properties of fish protein powder (proximate composition, pH, color, density, viscosity, fat adsorption, emulsifying capacity, emulsifying stability, foaming capacity, foaming stability, WBC, protein solubility in water, hygroscopicity, Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)-soluble peptides and free sulfhydryl groups) was investigated. Results showed that Fish protein powder (FPP) produced by leaching mince (LM) have higher protein, moisture, ash, pH, L*, viscosity, emulsion capacity, emulsion stability, foam capacity, foam stability, water binding capacity (WBC), protein solubility, hygroscopicity, TCA soluble peptides and free sulfhydryl group content than heated suspension (HS) (P<0.05). However, HS had higher fat and density in comparison with LM (P<0.05). No significant differences between a*, b* and fat adsorption were observed (P>0.05). Overall, it was observed that high temperature during heating of suspension in HS method makes possible protein denaturation and aggregation. Consequently, based on functional, chemical and physical properties, extraction of fish protein by leaching process was found to be suitable for the production of fish protein powder.

Abstract

Abstract. El-Nagerabi SAF, Elshafie AE, Alburashdi H. 2014. Hydrophysical, chemical and microbial properties of imported green waste composts. Nusantara Bioscience 6: 13-18. To study the hydrophysical, chemical and microbial properties of the imported green waste composts (GWCs) and their suitability as an alternative to agrochemicals, four types of GWCs (Florabella, Mikskaar, Potgrond, and Shamrock) were selected. All composts showed normal physical properties, except weed seeds in Shamrock. The germination indexes comparable to the standard (90%) were 100% for Mikskaar followed by Florabella (97%), Potgrond (95%), and Shamrock (92%). Variations in physicochemical properties were shown as acidic pH 5.1-6.5 (standard 5-8), electrical conductivity (EC) 0.8-1.8 mScm-1 (standard 0.0-4.0 mScm-1), moisture content (MC) 54-70.5% (standard 35-60%) and water holding capacity (WHC%) 400-800%. The chemical properties were expressed as ammonia concentrations 2871-6565 mg kg-1 (standard <500 mg kg-1), organic matter 53.3-66.2% (standard 35%). The concentrations of heavy metals (Zn, Ni, Pb, Hg, As, Cd, and Cr) were lower than the recommended levels. The bacterial colony forming unit per gram compost ranged between 330-2870 cfu/g, the most probable number (MPN) for coliform bacteria was 23-460 cfu/g, whereas the fungal cfu were 30-1800 cfu/g. Aspergillus niger was the predominant fungus recovered from all compost samples (100%), followed by A. fumigatus (75%), whereas A. sparsus, A. versicolor and yeasts (50%), and the remaining species of the genus Acremonium sp., Aspergillus flavus, A. restrictus, Cladosporium spp., and Penicillium spp. recovered from 25% of the samples. Generally, these composts revealed normal hydrophysical properties with obvious variation in moisture contents and elevated chemicals and microbial contamination. Therefore, there is an urgent need for quality control measurements and restrict abide to legislations and quarantine regulations.
