Abstract

Background. Rapid urbanization in Jakarta has intensified challenges related to food security, limited land availability, and environmental degradation, prompting the need for sustainable household-scale food production systems. This study explores the application of smart aquaponics technology as an integrated model combining aquaculture and hydroponics for efficient food production within urban households. Purpose. The research aims to assess the technological feasibility, productivity outcomes, and environmental benefits of smart aquaponics as a sustainable alternative to conventional urban farming methods. Method. A mixed-method design was employed, incorporating experimental trials, sensor-based monitoring, and household surveys conducted between January and August 2024 across five Jakarta districts.. Results. Results indicate that smart aquaponics systems increased vegetable yield by 38% and reduced water consumption by 42% compared to traditional hydroponic setups. The integration of IoT sensors enabled automated nutrient control, improving fish growth rates and system stability. Respondents reported enhanced household food self-sufficiency and reduced monthly food expenditure. Conclusion. The study concludes that smart aquaponics offers a scalable and environmentally friendly solution for urban food resilience, aligning with Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Goals on food security and environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Background. Mainstream digital public infrastructure (DPI) often fails to serve marginalized communities, reinforcing the “digital divide” caused by exclusionary design that overlooks barriers such as low literacy and lack of digital trust. Purpose. To quantitatively analyze the causal impact of a co-designed, voice-first mobile application on access to information and public services for marginalized communities. Method. The study employed a mixed-methods, quasi-experimental Difference-in-Differences (DiD) design, comparing an intervention group (N = 120) with a control group (N = 115). The intervention’s impact was measured using the validated Digital Access and Agency Index (DAAI). Results. The intervention group showed a transformative and statistically significant improvement: their service application rate increased from 8.3% to 62.5%, and their mean DAAI score rose by 22.38 points (p < 0.001), while the control group showed no change. Conclusion. The digital divide is fundamentally a design problem rather than a user deficit. The co-design process, by fostering social trust, served as the main causal mechanism for reducing digital exclusion, demonstrating that inclusive, human-centered design can effectively empower vulnerable populations.

Abstract

Background. Stunting is a major public health problem in Indonesia, especially in Central Java, where socioeconomic gaps and limited maternal health education persist. Low nutritional knowledge among pregnant women and caregivers delays early prevention, affecting child growth. Community participation is increasingly viewed as a key strategy to strengthen health literacy. Purpose. To evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based participatory approach in improving maternal knowledge, feeding practices, and early caregiving behaviors related to stunting prevention. Method. A mixed-methods design was used, combining surveys and focus group discussions with 65 pregnant women and caregivers in three Central Java districts. The intervention involved collaborative health education led by midwives, health workers, and local women leaders. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively and with paired t-tests; qualitative data were thematically coded. Results. Maternal health knowledge increased significantly (p < .001), and complementary feeding practices improved in line with national guidelines. Participants also reported higher confidence in monitoring growth and understanding nutrition. Qualitative data showed that collective learning strengthened social support for early stunting prevention. Conclusion. Participatory education builds community ownership, supports behavioral change, and improves the sustainability of maternal and child health programs. Scaling this model may contribute to national efforts to reduce stunting and enhance child well-being.

Abstract

Background. Rural micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Java remain economically marginalized due to low digital literacy, limited market access, and minimal use of e-commerce platforms. Although digital transformation initiatives have been introduced nationally, a digital divide between rural and urban areas persists, reducing SME competitiveness and weakening rural economic resilience. Purpose. The study aims to assess digital literacy needs among rural SMEs, implement a collaborative community-based digital training model, and evaluate the measurable impacts of the program on e-commerce adoption and business growth. Method. A mixed-methods research approach was used, combining pre- and post-training surveys, direct observation, focus group discussions, and business performance tracking. The intervention lasted 12 weeks and involved 50 SME participants from three rural villages in Java. Results. The study found notable improvements in participants’ digital skills, especially in online marketing, secure digital transactions, and the use of social commerce platforms. SMEs also experienced increased customer engagement and moderate revenue growth. Community participation further strengthened peer learning and supported ongoing knowledge retention. Conclusion. A community-based digital literacy model is effective and scalable for reducing digital gaps in rural areas. By empowering SMEs as active digital participants, the program enhances inclusive digital economic development and supports broader rural socio-economic advancement.

Abstract

Background. Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) play a crucial role in promoting local economic development in rural Indonesia. However, many BUMDes face persistent challenges in financial management and digital marketing, which limit their growth and sustainability. These challenges are particularly evident in rural areas such as Gunungkidul District, Yogyakarta, where limited managerial capacity and digital literacy hinder enterprise development. Purpose. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of assistance and capacity-building programs in improving financial management and digital marketing competencies among BUMDes managers in Gunungkidul. Specifically, it seeks to assess how such support contributes to operational sustainability and expanded market reach. Method. The study employs a mixed-methods approach by combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Data were collected from managers of 15 BUMDes in Gunungkidul District, focusing on changes in financial performance and the adoption of digital marketing practices following participation in assistance programs. Results. The findings indicate that the training and assistance programs significantly improved financial management practices among BUMDes managers. In addition, there was a notable increase in the adoption of digital marketing strategies, which enhanced business visibility, customer reach, and overall financial sustainability of the participating BUMDes. Conclusion. The study concludes that targeted support in financial management and digital marketing is effective in strengthening the capacity and sustainability of BUMDes in Gunungkidul. These findings highlight the importance of structured capacity-building programs in empowering local enterprises and provide a practical model that can be replicated in other rural areas to enhance economic resilience and community-based development.
