The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA), Indonesia, that publishes high-quality research articles and scholarly works in the fields of sports medicine, physical therapy, sports therapy, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and pain medicine. The journal aims to provide a global platform for innovative research, evidence-based practice, and advances in sports medicine and physiotherapy. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, the journal seeks to enhance understanding, application, and innovation in rehabilitation, movement, and function to improve the health and well-being of individuals across diverse populations. Manuscripts that pass the initial editorial screening undergo a double-blind peer-review process by at least two independent reviewers.

Background: Physical exercise brings about physiological adaptations that may influence drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) and thus therapeutic efficacy and interpretation of anti-doping testing. Interest in exercise-drug interactions is expanding, but the research base is still piecemeal and mostly limited to specific classes of drugs and anti-doping situations. Objective: This narrative review aimed to summarize the existing evidence of the effects of physical activity on drug pharmacokinetics and therapeutic efficacy and implications for sports doping. Methods: Using PubMed database, a narrative review was performed to identify original studies published in the English language in the last 10 years. We included human studies investigating the influence of exercise on medication pharmacokinetics, therapeutic effect or anti-doping significance. Ten articles published between 2022 and 2025 were included in the narrative synthesis after title, abstract and full-text screening against pre-defined eligibility criteria.Results: The reviewed studies showed consistent evidence that physical activity alters the pharmacokinetic processes by changing physiological factors such as blood flow, hydration status, renal function and metabolic activity, leading to interindividual differences in drug disposition and therapeutic response. These effects were more pronounced for inhaled β 2 -agonists and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and could affect the assessment of urine drug concentrations in the context of anti-doping tests. Metabolite profiling and enantioselective analysis are examples of new pharmacometric approaches that have improved the differentiation between therapeutic use of drugs and prohibited administration.Conclusion: Physical activity is an important determinant of pharmacokinetic variability with major implications for therapeutic efficacy and anti-doping interpretation. The combination of exercise physiology and pharmacokinetic evidence may lead to a more customized medication and to more accurate and equitable decision making in doping control.

Background: Musculoskeletal complaints are widespread among undergraduate students and are influenced by a number of modifiable lifestyle factors. While it has been shown that physical activity and sedentary behavior influence musculoskeletal health, the joint impacts of nutritional status and dietary behavior are not well established.Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the association between nutritional status, exercise behavior, dietary behavior and musculoskeletal complaints in undergraduate students.Methods: This quantitative cross-sectional study was performed on 80 undergraduate students recruited by using purposive sampling. Body weight and height were assessed and BMI was calculated. Activity behavior (physical activity level and sitting duration), dietary behavior, healthy food choices and musculoskeletal complaints were assessed by validated questionnaires. Data were examined using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rank correlation with p < 0.05 as a level of significance.Results: A majority of participants reported normal nutritional status (76.3%), low physical activity (52.5%), moderate sitting duration (51.3%), bad eating behavior (58.8%), and good healthy food choices (48.8%). Physical activity was adversely correlated with musculoskeletal complaints (r s = −0.560, p < 0.001) while sitting duration was positively correlated (r s = 0.440, p < 0.001). Gender, nutritional status, dietary behavior, and selection of healthy food were not significantly associated with musculoskeletal problems (p > 0.05).Conclusion: Musculoskeletal complaints among undergraduate students are strongly associated with physical activity levels and sitting duration. Encouraging regular physical activity and minimizing prolonged sitting could enhance musculoskeletal health within this population.

Background: Doping is a major problem in competitive sport, despite stringent anti-doping policies. Recent evidence reveals education is a key preventative approach to enhancing athletes’ awareness, ethical decision-making and long-term engagement with clean sport.Objective: This narrative review intended to consolidate the available research on anti-doping education, athletes’ understanding and prevention tactics in sport.Methods: A narrative literature review was performed using the Scopus database. We selected papers published in English between 2020 and 2025 using keywords linked to anti-doping, education, intervention, and athletes. Fifteen papers were included in the final narrative synthesis according to pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria.Results: Athletes’ anti-doping awareness remains inconsistent among athletic demographics despite past exposure to education. Values-based education, anti-doping literacy and athlete-centred educational approaches were consistently more effective than information-based initiatives in the improvement of knowledge, ethical awareness and decision-making . The review also found dietary supplement use was a key contributor to inadvertent doping, highlighting the need for supplement risk education and evidence-based decision making. In addition, sustained anti-doping prevention requires ongoing education, multidisciplinary stakeholder involvement and instructional initiatives customized to particular athlete groups.Conclusion: Anti-doping education should go beyond knowledge transmission and cover ethical values, anti-doping literacy, supplement awareness and context appropriate educational tactics. Continuous, multidisciplinary, and evidence-based educational initiatives are needed to improve clean sport and reduce the number of purposeful and unintentional anti-doping rule infractions.

Background: Cyclops syndrome is a recognized complication after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, characterized by fibrous nodule formation in the intercondylar notch leading to painful restriction of knee extension. While mechanical obstruction has been considered the primary cause, emerging evidence suggests that molecular dysbalance may also contribute to lesion development. Objectives: This case report aims to describe the clinical symptoms of a patient with cyclops syndrome following ACL rupture and to explore whether these manifestations arise predominantly from mechanical obstruction or molecular dysregulation. Methods: A descriptive case report design was employed. Patient symptoms were assessed through clinical examination, range of motion measurement, pain evaluation, and functional assessment. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and arthroscopic evaluation confirmed the presence of a fibrous nodule. Literature review was integrated to contextualize findings within known molecular pathways, including cytokine imbalance and fibroblast activation. Results: The patient presented with painful loss of terminal knee extension, stiffness, and mechanical catching during movement. Imaging confirmed a fibrous nodule consistent with cyclops lesion. Symptom analysis suggested contributions from both mechanical obstruction and molecular dysbalance, with clinical features aligning with reported cytokine-mediated fibrosis and extracellular matrix remodeling. Conclusion: Cyclops syndrome after ACL reconstruction is a multifactorial condition, with symptoms arising from both mechanical and molecular mechanisms. Early recognition of extension deficits, precise surgical technique, and structured physiotherapy are essential for management. Consideration of molecular pathways may inform future therapeutic strategies, integrating anti-fibrotic or cytokine-modulating interventions to complement mechanical treatment.

Background: research background Resting heart rate (RHR) and maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂max) are important indicators of cardiovascular health and physical fitness. Regular aerobic training is known to reduce RHR and enhance VO₂max through cardiovascular adaptations. However, the relationship between these variables in physically active sports science students has not been fully established, highlighting the need for further investigation. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the relationship between resting heart rate (RHR) and aerobic capacity (VO₂max) among sports science students. Methods: The research was conducted using a descriptive quantitative design with an observational-analytic approach. A total of 30 physically active students aged 19–22 years were selected through purposive sampling. RHR was measured using a digital blood pressure monitor and pulse palpation, while VO₂max was estimated using the 12-minute Cooper test. Statistical analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between RHR and VO₂max (r = –0.514, p = 0.004), indicating that students with lower RHR tend to have higher aerobic capacity. Results: The results reinforce the physiological understanding that cardiovascular adaptations from regular aerobic exercise—such as increased stroke volume and enhanced parasympathetic tone—contribute to reduced RHR and improved VO₂max. Conclusion: These findings suggest that RHR can serve as a practical, non-invasive indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness, particularly in populations undergoing structured physical training.
