Abstract

This study is a multimodal analysis of selected political campaign posters of Bola Ahmed Tinubu "” one of the presidential candidates for the 2023 General Elections in Nigeria, of the All progressives congress (APC) political party in Nigeria. The data for the study were campaign posters that were downloaded from online sources. The data were descriptively analysed using Kress & van Leeuwen's (2006) social semiotic theory of multimodal discourse analysis. Results show that the political campaign posters were consciously used by the APC presidential candidate to promote his political agenda and solicit votes from the electorate. Through these campaign posters, he is able to disseminate information of varied intents, and project his political ideology on the minds of the electorate via visual and non-visual messages inserted in the campaign posters. The visuals and written texts on the campaign posters often reflect the socio-cultural aspects of human relationship, their political inclinations and the reality of the Nigerian nation. It further revealed that semiotic-cultural and social factors have bearings on political campaign posters in Nigeria. Based on the findings, the study concludes that campaign posters are veritable tools which have the propensity to encode socio-cultural happenings, the mindset, and intention of politicians.

Abstract

Eating and drinking form part of the daily activities of the Nzema. This paper investigates metaphorical extensions associated with the consumption verbs di "˜to eat' and no "˜to drink' in Nzema (Kwa, Bia). It seeks to explore domains in which the verbs are utilised metaphorically to relay everyday concepts and cognitive processes in the Nzema language. Data for the study comprise conversations collected from four respondents. The paper first presents a brief discussion on the components that comprise the central meanings of the verbs. The verbs and their metaphorical extensions are discussed under two major themes: Agent-oriented extensions and patient-oriented extensions. Under agent-oriented extensions, figurative usages that are based on the internalization of food as well as extensions based on the sensation of the agent undergoing the event are discussed. Extensions derived from the destruction of food during the process of consumption is discussed under the patient-oriented. The paper finds that in Nzema, the verb di "˜to eat' is utilised metaphorically to convey ideas such as to arbitrate, seduce, take oath, misappropriate among others. The verb no "˜to drink' conveys ideas such as to inhale or smoke, and to sponge. Remarkably, some metaphorical extensions of consumption verbs that are not reported in other African languages, such as extensions of eat for squabbling, for taking oath, for insinuating, for witnessing and for hunting, and the extensions of drink for sponging are present in Nzema.

Abstract

The purpose of figurative language is to add creativity and depth to writing. Beauty and artwork make poems more interesting and unique. The study's objectives were to identify the literary devices used in a selected poem from the Grade 9 English Literary Textbook and explain the contextual meaning of each literary device. The researcher categorized the literary devices according to Perrine's model. The findings revealed the identification of ten literary devices. After the analysis, the data showed ten types of literary devices: simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, paradox, hyperbole, and irony. The study identified 115 instances of literary devices in the poems, with 5 similes, 28 metaphors, 34 personifications, 2 apostrophes, 4 synecdoches, 3 metonymies, 3 symbols, 6 paradoxes, 13 hyperboles, and 7 ironies. The most prominent literary device was personification, which occurred 34 times. It was also found that the least used literary devices were apostrophes and symbols, each appearing three times. The lesson plan created in this study is based on the Grade 9 textbook and uses the selected poem.

Abstract

Political posters play a significant role in shaping voter perceptions and behaviors in Bangladesh, employing visual elements such as color, design, and symbolism to effectively communicate messages and resonate emotionally with diverse electorate groups. This study investigates the influence of these posters on voter behavior toward political candidates and parties, drawing on established theoretical frameworks like the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM). Through a survey-based approach, our findings reveal that posters exert substantial influence, with a majority of respondents acknowledging their role in shaping political opinions. Emotional appeals embedded in posters are shown to sway voter decisions, emphasizing the posters' effectiveness in engaging voters through both central and peripheral routes of persuasion. Moreover, the study highlights posters' enduring impact beyond elections, contributing to sustained political attitudes and fostering democratic engagement in Bangladesh's socio-political landscape. By aligning with existing literature on visual persuasion and political communication, this research underscores the critical role of posters as powerful tools in influencing public opinion and promoting civic participation.   Keywords: political poster, persuasion, voter behavior, Bangladesh, civic participation

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the correlation between WhatsApp usage and the religiosity level of PP Jagad Alif santri, as well as the factors influencing this correlation. A correlational quantitative approach was used to measure the relationship between these two variables. A sample of 58 individuals was selected using simple random sampling from a population of 68 santri at PP Jagad Alif, calculated with the Slovin formula. Data were collected through surveys using the SMUI instrument for WhatsApp and the CRS instrument for religiosity, with each instrument demonstrating a validity of 0.9 Pearson's r and reliability scores of 0.996 and 0.995 Cronbach's α, respectively. Data analysis techniques included Pearson correlation and simple linear regression to test the hypothesis. The results showed a positive correlation of 0.349 with a p-value of 0.004, and the contribution of the social media variable to religiosity was 12.2%. These findings indicate that the correlation between social media usage and the religiosity level of PP Jagad Alif santri is weak.

Abstract

The gender-based stunting prevention acceleration program in Bojonegoro Regency still faces challenges. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the communication strategy for accelerating stunting prevention through a gender perspective. A descriptive method with a qualitative approach was used in the study, conducted in three sub-districts (Kapas, Balen, and Gondang) from January to December 2023. Primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with 23 informants from various related agencies. Data analysis utilized source triangulation, technique triangulation, and GAP analysis. The results show that the stunting prevention acceleration program by the Bojonegoro Regency Government with a gender approach has been planned specifically and sensitively. However, only the Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, and Family Planning Agency have a gender-friendly program with balanced participation. Despite using detailed communication design through intrapersonal approaches, public communication, digital media, and the 8-convergence communication strategy design, the program still has gender participation gaps in access and decision-making.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant changes to family life, including the role of parents in accompanying their children in the digital era. This study examines the role of parents in supporting children's digital literacy during the pandemic, while also identifying challenges in minimizing the risks of exposure to harmful online content. Using a quantitative approach, the study involved 25,164 children and 14,169 parents across Indonesia. The findings show a drastic increase in children's gadget use, with the majority of time spent on online entertainment. However, parental supervision remains limited, both in terms of quantity and quality. Only 59.1% of fathers and 68% of mothers consistently provide digital literacy education. This lack of supervision exposes children to risks such as cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content, and technology addiction. The study highlights the importance of collaboration between parents and educational institutions in strengthening safe and beneficial digital literacy practices for children in the digital era. Keywords: Children's digital literacy, family education, harmful online content, parental supervision, technology addiction.

Abstract

Effective communication strategies can increase public awareness and understanding of climate change, leading to behavioural changes that support environmental sustainability. However, how climate change communication has influenced responsible environmental behaviour among residents of Niger state has largely remained uncertain. The study was guided by four research objectives with survey as the method of enquiry, while the questionnaire served as the instrument for data collection. Taro Yamane (1964) statistical formula was used to arrive at a sample size of 400 respondents derived from the study population, while the theory of reasoned action (TRA) served as the theoretical framework. Findings revealed high level of awareness and knowledge of climate change communications among residents of Niger state with radio and public campaigns identified to have played crucial roles in disseminating climate change information. The study concluded that, diverse communication channels and appropriate framing techniques should be utilized to not only create awareness about climate change effects, but to also drive people to act to maintain a sustainable environment. It was recommended among other things that climate change messages should be disseminated utilising both the conventional and social media to educate and inform a more diverse and heterogeneous audience. Abstract

This study examined how language use and communication strategies influence doctor-patient interactions in Tanzanian public hospitals. Guided by Communication Accommodation Theory, the study focused on Amana, Mwananyamala, and Temeke Regional Referral Hospitals. Using a phenomenological qualitative design, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document reviews from 90 participants (30 doctors, 30 nurses, and 30 patients). Data were analyzed using NVivo 12 software, enabling thematic coding and sentiment analysis. Findings revealed that Swahili was the dominant language, but code-switching with English was common, particularly for technical terms. While simplification, analogies, non-verbal cues, and occasional third-party interpretation improved understanding, excessive or unexplained English terms led to confusion especially among elderly or less-educated patients. Cultural and linguistic mismatches further hindered communication when doctors failed to adapt to patients' backgrounds. The study recommends Swahili communication training, standardized bilingual materials, and integration of communication skills into medical education. These findings contribute to efforts toward linguistically inclusive and culturally responsive healthcare in Tanzania.
