First published in 2024, the journal is issued quarterly in February, May, August, and November. It provides an academic platform for scholars, researchers, legal practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders to examine issues concerning Palestine and their relevance to Indonesian society from legal, social, political, cultural, and humanitarian perspectives. The journal publishes original research articles, review articles, conceptual studies, and other scholarly works within its scope. It welcomes interdisciplinary research addressing Indonesia’s legal and political positions on Palestinian rights, foreign relations, humanitarian assistance, international solidarity, public opinion, civil society, social movements, historical developments, and cultural expressions related to Palestine. The journal also encourages studies examining the influence of Palestinian issues on Indonesian law, politics, society, and culture. The journal applies a double-anonymous peer-review process and an Open Access Policy, providing free and immediate access to published articles. Abstract

This paper examines Indonesia’s diplomatic efforts to advocate for Palestinian statehood in international forums, particularly within the United Nations (UN). As one of the largest Muslim-majority countries with a history of anti-colonial resistance, Indonesia has consistently positioned itself as a strong supporter of Palestine. The study analyzes Indonesia’s engagement in UN debates, resolutions, and initiatives aimed at advancing Palestinian sovereignty, while also navigating the complexities of global politics. The paper explores the challenges Indonesia faces in balancing its domestic interests—such as national identity and regional influence—with international pressures, particularly from Western powers and Israel. By examining key diplomatic moments, including Indonesia’s role in the UN General Assembly and Security Council, this paper assesses the effectiveness of Indonesia’s advocacy and the limitations it faces in the current geopolitical context. Additionally, the paper highlights how Indonesia’s foreign policy toward Palestine has been shaped by historical, religious, and geopolitical factors, underscoring the complexity of its position in international diplomacy.

Abstract

This paper explores the framing of Palestine as a symbol of anti-colonial struggle within Indonesian nationalist discourse and solidarity movements. Drawing on Indonesia’s own history of resistance against Dutch colonial rule, the paper argues that many in Indonesia perceive the Palestinian struggle for independence as an extension of their own anti-colonial history. The study investigates how this shared history of resistance has fostered strong public and political support for Palestine, particularly among nationalist groups and political activists. By analyzing historical texts, speeches, and cultural references, the paper explores how Palestinian liberation is framed as an integral part of the global struggle against colonialism and imperialism. The study also examines the evolution of Indonesian solidarity movements with Palestine, from early post-independence support to contemporary youth-led activism, and the way this solidarity has influenced national identity and political discourse in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper investigates Indonesia’s policies on Palestinian refugees, focusing on the country’s humanitarian responses and its legal framework for offering asylum. Indonesia has historically demonstrated strong solidarity with Palestine, but its policies toward Palestinian refugees are complex and multifaceted. The study examines Indonesia’s stance on the issue within the broader context of its immigration policies, international refugee conventions, and bilateral relations with Palestinian authorities. It also analyzes the support provided by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Indonesia, as well as the legal challenges refugees face in terms of residency, employment, and access to services. By assessing Indonesia’s role in the international refugee system and its approach to Palestinian refugees, this paper highlights the tension between Indonesia’s commitment to human rights and the practical limitations of its domestic legal frameworks. It concludes by considering the role of Indonesia in influencing regional and global discourse on refugee rights, particularly in the context of the Palestinian crisis.

This paper explores the role of social media in shaping Indonesian public discourse on Palestine, particularly through the engagement of youth and activists. The study investigates how social media platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, have become critical tools for advocacy, mobilization, and the dissemination of information about the Palestinian cause. By examining the use of hashtags like #FreePalestine and #SaveAlAqsa, the paper highlights how digital activism in Indonesia has played a significant role in building solidarity with Palestine, especially among younger generations. The research also analyzes the ways in which Indonesian activists utilize these platforms to counter mainstream media narratives, promote awareness of the Palestinian struggle, and call for action on social and political issues related to Palestine. Furthermore, the paper addresses the challenges of misinformation and online censorship in the digital activism space, shedding light on the intersection of social media, politics, and youth engagement in Indonesia.

This paper examines the role of Indonesian artists and musicians in advocating for Palestine through cultural diplomacy. From music concerts to art exhibitions, Indonesian cultural figures have long used their platforms to raise awareness of Palestinian issues, drawing connections between their own history of struggle and the Palestinian cause. The paper analyzes how artists and musicians in Indonesia have contributed to global cultural solidarity movements, using art, music, and public performances as a means of fostering dialogue and raising awareness about the Palestinian struggle. By focusing on key cultural initiatives, this study highlights the impact of creative expression in shaping public opinion and diplomatic discourse. Furthermore, the paper explores how cultural diplomacy has facilitated Indonesia’s position as a key advocate for Palestine on the international stage, reinforcing the country’s identity as a proponent of justice and human rights. The research also considers the role of Indonesian cultural institutions in promoting solidarity with Palestine, both domestically and internationally.

This paper critically examines how Palestinian issues are represented in the Indonesian educational curriculum, focusing on textbooks, teaching materials, and the role of educators in shaping young people’s understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Drawing on an analysis of school syllabi, university courses, and extracurricular resources, the study investigates how Palestine is framed within broader themes of global justice, anti-colonial struggle, and human rights. The research explores the historical narratives presented to students, including discussions around Palestine's right to self-determination, the impact of Israeli occupation, and the international community’s role in resolving the conflict. The paper also considers the influence of Indonesia’s political and religious context, particularly its Muslim-majority identity and historical ties with Palestine, on the content and presentation of these educational materials. By interviewing educators and analyzing student reactions, this paper assesses the pedagogical approaches employed in conveying the Palestinian cause. This paper investigates the role of Indonesia’s Muslim majority in mobilizing support for Palestine, focusing on the intersection of religion, politics, and activism. Indonesia, as the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, has long demonstrated strong solidarity with Palestine, both in terms of public opinion and political advocacy. This study examines the factors that contribute to this mobilization, including religious teachings, political ideologies, and the influence of Islamic organizations in shaping the discourse on Palestinian rights. Drawing on interviews with religious leaders, political activists, and members of Islamic organizations, this paper explores how Islamic narratives of justice, resistance, and anti-colonial struggle resonate with Indonesia's Muslim population. The research also addresses how religious identity shapes not only public sentiment but also formal political actions, such as Indonesia's participation in international forums advocating for Palestinian statehood. The study argues that the Palestinian cause occupies a central place in Indonesian Islamic discourse, and explores how this has influenced Indonesia's broader foreign policy and its role in global humanitarian advocacy.

Sukarno’s foreign policy, grounded in anti-colonialism and solidarity with oppressed nations, provided a foundational framework for Indonesia’s pro-Palestinian stance. The paper traces the evolution of this policy from Sukarno’s era to the present, focusing on key moments in Indonesia’s diplomatic engagement with Palestine and its representation in public discourse. Through archival research and a review of speeches, diplomatic correspondence, and media portrayals, the study highlights how Sukarno’s rhetoric—particularly his framing of Palestine as a symbol of global resistance against imperialism—resonates with current Indonesian foreign policy. The paper also examines how Sukarno’s legacy is invoked in contemporary political debates, particularly within nationalist and Islamic movements in Indonesia. The research reveals how Sukarno’s advocacy for Palestinian statehood has been institutionalized in Indonesia's diplomatic narrative and remains a central component of Indonesia’s identity as a leader of the Global South.

This paper explores the role of Indonesian Islamic non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in supporting Palestine, focusing on their dual function of providing humanitarian aid and engaging in political advocacy. Indonesian Islamic NGOs have played a critical role in both alleviating the immediate humanitarian needs of Palestinians and raising awareness about the political dimensions of the conflict. The paper investigates the organizational strategies of several key NGOs, their partnerships with international organizations, and their domestic political engagement. By analyzing case studies of fundraising campaigns, medical missions, and educational programs, the study highlights how these organizations balance their religious mission with political advocacy, emphasizing Palestinian sovereignty and rights. The research also delves into the challenges these NGOs face, such as navigating complex international legal frameworks, managing relations with the Indonesian government, and addressing ideological divisions within Indonesian society regarding the Palestinian cause. This paper provides a critical analysis of how Palestinian women’s experiences are represented in Indonesian media, focusing on issues of gender, resistance, and solidarity. While Palestinian women have long been at the forefront of the struggle for Palestinian rights, their stories are often marginalized in mainstream media. This study examines how Indonesian news outlets, social media platforms, and cultural productions frame the role of Palestinian women in the resistance movement, highlighting themes of gendered violence, resilience, and activism. Through content analysis of news reports, documentaries, and feature articles, the research explores the intersections of gender, politics, and international solidarity, particularly within the context of Indonesia’s Muslim-majority identity. The paper also looks at how these media representations affect public perceptions of Palestine in Indonesia, particularly among young people and feminist groups. By investigating the portrayal of Palestinian women as both victims and active agents of change, the paper sheds light on the complex ways in which Indonesian media contribute to global solidarity movements, framing Palestinian women as symbols of resistance and justice.
