Abstract

The rapid development of social media, especially Instagram, has given rise to new forms of Qur'anic interpretation that utilize visual power, popular narratives, and digital delivery models. This article critically analyzes how the @Quranreview account frames Qur'anic verses as a discourse of resistance against injustice through the representation of Qur'anic figures such as Qarun, Pharaoh, and Moses. Based on three posts that explicitly address issues of corruption, abuse of power, and structural injustice, this study examines the construction of this discourse using a qualitative approach with Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis. The results of the study show that, at the textual level, these accounts utilize persuasive language, moral metaphors, and strong visual designs to emphasize the opposition between the perpetrators of injustice and the victims of oppression. At the level of discourse practice, content production is closely related to the dynamics of digital media that encourage visual creativity, responsiveness to current political issues, and audience consumption patterns oriented towards moral narratives. Meanwhile, at the level of social practice, the discourse constructed reflects Indonesia's socio-political conditions, which are characterized by weakening public trust, polarization, and high sensitivity to open criticism. Overall, this study finds that @Quranreview functions as a form of symbolic resistance that uses the authority of sacred texts to challenge the narrative of power and strengthen the ethical awareness of society in the digital space.

Abstract

The discourse on Islam as discussed by Muslim scholars continues to evolve in line with Indonesia's socio-political context and elicits diverse responses. Sulaiman Abdullah emerges as a multidimensional figure who combines scholarly authority, moral integrity, and the ability to adapt to sociopolitical changes in Jambi. He played a strategic role as a mediator between orthodoxy, reformism, and local political interests. This study aims to position Abdullah as a link between Islamic discourse and socio-political change from the New Order era to the post-Reform era. This study employs a qualitative method based on library research, supplemented by interviews and documentation. In the analysis, Krippendorff's content analysis theory is employed to interpret Abdullah's thoughts as text while capturing their intellectual context. The study shows that Sulaiman Abdullah shaped Islamic discourse in Jambi by negotiating religious orthodoxy and the demands of modernity from the New Order era to the post-Reform era. His thoughts demonstrate how local scholar-intellectuals integrate classical fiqh traditions with contemporary social needs so that Islam appears as a source of social ethics and community empowerment. The contribution of this research lies in broadening the scope of studies on Indonesian Islam by positioning local ulama as key actors in the development of Islamic thought, amidst a field of study that has hitherto been dominated by a focus on national figures.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how authority, authenticity, and the quality of Qur’anic interpretation are perceived in the digital age through a case study of the content “Ilmu Parenting dalam Al-Quran?” presented by Husain on the YouTube channel @kadamsidik. The method used is qualitative with content analysis of the interpretation material and communication strategies presented in the video. The analysis was conducted using Max Weber’s framework of authority (traditional, charismatic, and legal-rational), as well as indicators of authenticity and quality of interpretation. The results of the study show that Husain has developed a style of digital preaching that emphasizes exegesis education with a simple, communicative, and relevant use of language so that the message is easily understood by the audience. The authority he displays includes traditional authority through references to primary sources, charismatic authority through a persuasive style of delivery, and rational-legal authority through systematic argumentation. In terms of authenticity, the content consistently refers to the Qur’an, hadith, and classical exegesis, while its quality is evident in the depth of analysis, clarity of methodology, and relevance of the themes to the needs of the digital audience. Thus, the content of “Ilmu Parenting dalam Al-Quran?” shows a form of digital interpretation that is authentic, high-quality, and representative of the authority of interpretation on social media.

Abstract

The period of the Umayyad Dynasty (661–750 AD) is often considered a period of minimal scientific contribution, even though this era was a critical phase in the formation of Islamic scientific epistemology. This research aims to reconstruct and analyze how science was conceptualized and practiced in that era, focusing on the dynamics of the integration of the three pillars of knowledge: ‘Aql (intellect), Revelation, and Inheritance of civilization. This study is important to fill in the gaps in the understanding of the epistemological evolution of Islamic science before it reached its peak in the Abbasid era. The research uses a qualitative design with a historical-philosophical approach. Data is collected through literature studies and documentation, then analyzed by philosophical interpretation and content analysis. The results of the study show that the interaction of the three sources of knowledge in the Umayyad era was dynamic, pragmatic, and driven by state needs. This integration manifested itself in the fields of astronomy, architecture, medicine, and theology, creating a selective and directed initial synthesis. This study concludes that the Umayyad era was not a period of scientific vacuum, but rather a foundational period that laid down an epistemological framework, intellectual infrastructure, and integrative awareness between revelation, reason, and the legacy of civilization. The implication is a reassessment of the significance of the Umayyad era in the grand narrative of Islamic science history, with a theoretical contribution in enriching the philosophical map of Islamic science and a historical contribution in uncovering critical phases of transmission and adaptation.

Abstract

This study highlights the semantic evolution of three keywords in Qur’an 4:34 (al-Rijāl, al-Nisā, and Qawwām) and their implications for the role of stay-at-home dads. This study stems from an online discussion on the X platform (formerly Twitter) regarding the reality of stay-at-home dads and the limited literature discussing the interpretation of Qur’an 4:34 on the shift in roles in the household, particularly in the stay-at-home dad context. This study aims to analyze the evolution of the meanings of three keywords in Qur’an 4:34, identify the factors of acceptance and resistance to stay-at-home dad, and examine the socio-theological implications for the shift in gender roles in domestic relationships. Using Liz Przybylski’s hybrid-ethnography scheme as a data collection method, this study integrates interviews with five couples, online media discourse, and analysis of three cross-era interpretations: al-Ṭabarī, Amina Wadud, and Nasaruddin Umar. The analysis of this study integrates two approaches, Stephen Ullmann’s change of meaning and Judith Butler’s gender performativity. The result of this study found a consistent trajectory from biological-hierarchical to functional-metaphorical, supported by the performativity of stay-at-home dad as a means of legitimisation. The implications of this study confirm that contemporary interpretations provide a more inclusive theological basis for the existence of stay-at-home dad, challenging the hegemony of patriarchal interpretations and opening space for linguistic and social ijtihād to achieve egalitarian, contextual, and adaptive gender principles in Muslim family life and the evolving social issues in contemporary society. The dialogue among these three keywords is a form of ongoing discourse on equality and justice within the framework of Islam.

Abstract

During a disease outbreak, vaccination can lead to diverse societal narratives. Some perceive it as conflicting with Islamic law, while others consider it a component of medical practice aimed at preventing viral infections, akin to the treatment employed during the era of the Prophet Muhammad. Vaccination has substantial positive effects, particularly as an antidote to viruses, bolstering the body’s immune system and resistance against disease outbreaks. However, the utilization of vaccination for immunity remains controversial due to the unclear composition of vaccines, rendering its application a matter of deliberation. This paper examines hadiths pertaining to the Prophet’s treatment and contextualizes them within contemporary vaccination challenges. Employing a thematic approach, it analyzes several hadith texts, referencing hadith books, journals, articles, and pertinent references. The study considers the historical, social, cultural, and contemporary context. The conclusion is that hadiths related to medicine during the Prophet’s time can be comprehended in the context of contemporary vaccination. Hadith texts are interpreted as attempts to cure. While intended as a treatment during the Prophet’s time, it can be understood as a form of vaccination: a medicine that safeguards the body (wilāyah al-ḥifẓ) for modern society’s well-being, preventing the spread of diseases and ensures the protection of the soul (ḥifẓ al-nafs).

Abstract

The Qur’an addresses the tension between firm religious commitment and social coexistence in plural societies. This study responds to this gap by analyzing the dialectics of religious moderation in the Qur’an through verses on plurality, justice, dialogue, and the limits of tolerance. This study uses a qualitative library-based design with thematic Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr mawdūʿī), qualitative content analysis, and contextual hermeneutics. The data consist of the Qur’an, classical and contemporary commentaries, and peer-reviewed academic publications from the last five years. The findings reveal four main points. First, the Qur’an frames plurality as sunnatullāh that requires ethical management. Second, wasaṭiyyah serves as the core principle of moderation by balancing theological commitment and social openness. Third, Qur’anic dialogue ethics guide interfaith relations through justice, civility, and mutual respect. Fourth, tolerance has normative limits that protect religious identity without promoting exclusivism. This article offers the Dialectical Qur’anic Moderation Model as a conceptual framework that connects revelation, exegetical tradition, and plural social practice. The study contributes to contemporary Ushuluddin scholarship and provides normative guidance for religious education, interfaith dialogue, and public policy in multicultural societies.

Abstract

This article examines how hadiths regarding obedience to rulers are used as framing instruments in digital religious discourse disseminated by the Instagram account @ShahihFiqih in response to the phenomenon of demonstrations. This study employs a netnographic approach to trace the patterns of narrative, visuals, and digital interactions that shape the dissemination of religious discourse on social media. This study argues that hadiths are not merely normative references but are also mobilized to shape public perception by fostering the understanding that obeying leaders is viewed as a religiously correct act, whereas criticism, refusal, or demonstrations are often positioned as actions that can lead to fitnah and chaos. Analysis shows that visual strategies and concise narratives reinforce the legitimacy of Salafi discourse, which frames political criticism as a moral threat. This framing narrows the space for public religious expression by positioning obedience as the primary ethical choice. This article emphasizes that the debate surrounding the hadith on obedience to a ruler must be understood within the context of digital ideological contestation, which determines how interpretations are directed, received, and interpreted. These findings underscore the urgency of a more critical and contextual interpretive approach to foster a form of religiosity that is just and responsive to contemporary socio-political dynamics.

Abstract

This study examines the hadith prohibiting women from traveling without a mahram by focusing on the reconstruction of its underlying legal cause (‘illah) through the double movement approach of Fazlur Rahman. The issue becomes increasingly relevant in the context of modern society, where women’s mobility in education, work, and religious practices has significantly expanded, often creating tension between textual interpretations of hadith and contemporary realities. This research employs a qualitative library-based method using primary sources from the Kutub al-Sittah. supported by classical commentaries and recent scholarly works. The analysis involves takhrīj al-ḥadīth, examination of textual variations, identification of ‘illah through uṣūl al-fiqh, and reinterpretation using the double movement framework. The findings reveal that variations in the duration of travel within the hadith traditions indicate that time limitation is not the central concern. Instead, the primary ‘illah is the protection and safety (al-amn) of women during travel, with the presence of a mahram functioning as a contextual means rather than an absolute requirement. Through contextual reinterpretation, this study concludes that the prohibition is conditional and dependent on the level of security. Theoretically, this research contributes to the development of contextual hadith studies by integrating uṣūl al-fiqh and modern hermeneutics, while practically offering a relevant framework for understanding women’s mobility in contemporary Muslim societies.

Abstract

This study investigates the transformation of marriage customs, particularly the Genti Duduk ritual, among the Musi Malay community in Banyuasin, driven by social dynamics and processes of modernization. It aims to analyze the resilience of Islamic values in responding to these changes and to examine the position of local custom through the lens of ʿurf in Islamic jurisprudence. Employing a qualitative methodology with an integrative sociological, normative, and philosophical approach, data were collected over four months in five sub-districts through non-participant observation, in-depth interviews with community and religious leaders, and documentary analysis. The data were processed using the interactive analytical model of Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal that the Genti Duduk ritual encompasses three profound philosophical meanings: a sacred representation of the daughter, a symbol of the family's non-material values, and an embodiment of sincere familial bonds. Although the ritual's form has been simplified due to internal and external factors, its core values persist and align with Islamic principles, qualifying it as ʿurf ṣaḥīḥ (valid custom). This study underscores the adaptive capacity of local wisdom in maintaining its essence while demonstrating harmonious integration with Islamic values. It concludes that preservation strategies should prioritize the transmission of these philosophical foundations rather than merely preserving ritual forms.
