Abstract

The discourse of gender identity in the interpretation of the Qur'an has become a crucial issue as awareness of gender inequality in Muslim society increases. This phenomenon is notable because traditional interpretations are often patriarchally biased, fueling demands for more inclusive hermeneutics. This study aims to analyze Aḥmad Muṣṭafā al-Marāghī's hermeneutic approach in interpreting gender verses, as well as evaluate his contribution to the discourse on gender equality in Islam. The method employed is a critical analysis of Tafsīr al-Marāghī, utilizing an interdisciplinary approach that combines the study of religion, gender, and hermeneutics. The results of the study show that al-Marāghī developed a contextual method of " maqāṣidī interpretation", deconstructing traditional gender narratives and opening up a space for negotiation between sacred texts and social realities. The main findings reveal that gender identity is dynamic in its interpretation, influenced by the interaction of texts, readers, and socio-historical contexts. The contribution of this research lies in enriching modern interpretation theory with an inclusive framework, as well as providing practical recommendations for Islamic education curricula and gender justice policy advocacy.

Abstract

This article examines the complex discourse surrounding the Qur'anic revelation from the hermeneutical perspective of Ruhollah Mosavi Khomeini. The review considers both theoretical and practical reasoning. It begins by investigating Khomeini’s interpretation of the Prophet Muhammad’s revelatory experience, which was confirmed as a linguistic and religious text at a theoretical level. It then explores Khomeini’s hermeneutical strategy for interpreting the anthropological consequences of the revelation phenomenon, culminating in efforts to establish an Islamic government system in practice. Thus, this article addresses the question of how Khomeini’s hermeneutics of Qur'anic revelation provides a theoretical basis for the theory of Velayat-e Faqih and the Islamic Revolution of Iran. As a library study utilising written data as the main research material, this study will adopt a descriptive-analytical method to investigate Khomeini’s works as primary data and elaborate on them using various pieces of Islamic literature as secondary data. To articulate the transformation of discourse from the theoretical to the political, the article uses Ricoeur’s hermeneutical arc framework, complemented by his conceptualisation of interpretation as triple mimesis, in which human action, textual configuration, and the reader’s world are dynamically interconnected. It concludes that, by integrating Sadrian mysticism, jurisprudence, Shi’ite theology, and political theology, Khomeini interpreted revelation as both a metaphysical-linguistic and an anthropological-political event. In this interpretation, the embodiment of the Qur'an in the Prophet provides a model for divine governance in the age of occultism.

Abstract

Modern society faces serious challenges due to rapid urbanization, globalization, and technological advancement, which have triggered crises of identity, social alienation, and increasing mental health issues. At the same time, secularism and materialism have distanced individuals from their spiritual foundations, creating an urgent need for a renewed search for meaning and purpose. This study analyzes Muhammad Iqbal’s thought in responding to these challenges and examines how his theological and philosophical reconstruction offers an alternative framework for addressing the spiritual and existential problems of modern Muslim society. Using a qualitative approach through an in-depth literature study, this research explores essential concepts in Iqbal’s worldview, including Khudī (selfhood), educational reform, Muslim unity, innovation in religious practice, and the reinterpretation of Islamic teachings. The findings reveal that Iqbal’s reconstruction provides a coherent paradigm for revitalizing spiritual identity, strengthening moral agency, and fostering social solidarity in the context of modernity. His emphasis on dynamic selfhood and contextual ijtihād offers practical guidance for overcoming identity fragmentation, educational stagnation, and the widening gap between religious values and contemporary realities. This study contributes to the existing scholarship by offering a systematic synthesis of Iqbal’s ideas as a transformative framework for theological–philosophical renewal and by demonstrating its relevance for addressing the structural and existential crises of modern Muslim society. Therefore, Iqbal’s intellectual legacy not only enriches contemporary discourse on Islamic thought but also provides visionary and applicable solutions for building a more just, inclusive, and spiritually grounded society in the age of globalization

Abstract

The development of social media has driven a transformation in Islamic preaching, moving from conventional lectures to fast, concise, and persuasive visual communication via digital memes. This phenomenon has attracted attention because memes no longer function merely as virtual entertainment but have become instruments for shaping religious opinion and driving social participation fueled by religious emotions. Ustaz Abdul Somad’s Instagram account is an example of digital preaching that actively spreads memes calling for charity, citing the Prophet’s hadiths. This study aims to analyze the representation of calls for charity in Instagram memes and to identify the relevance of these visual messages to the Prophet’s hadiths, which serve as the basis for the legitimacy of his preaching. The study uses a qualitative approach, employing content analysis of memes on the theme of charity uploaded to the account @ustadzabdulsomad_official. Data are analyzed thematically by comparing the meme narratives to the hadiths related to charity. The results of the study indicate that the published Islamic preaching memes contain a religious message that emphasizes the virtue of ongoing charity, a respectful attitude in sharing, belief in the reward and provision from Allah, and trust in divine destiny. The message is presented through a combination of hadith quotations, motivational sentences, and simple visuals that can strengthen the audience’s persuasive power. On the other hand, there is a tendency for the charity meme to be used as a digital Islamic preaching marketing strategy to support donation activities at foundations associated with Ustaz Abdul Somad. These findings confirm that Instagram memes serve dual functions: as a medium for Islamic preaching and as an instrument for mobilizing donations through religious authority in the digital space.

Abstract

From an Islamic perspective, women hold a strategic position as the first and primary educators of children, particularly through mothers’ roles in shaping the morals, faith, and personality of the nation’s next generation. Social reality shows that modernization and lifestyle changes often marginalize mothers’ roles in children’s education. This study aims to examine the role of women as educators as outlined in the Hadith and to formulate strategies to strengthen mothers’ roles in educating the nation’s children. The research method is a qualitative study with a library approach, using thematic analysis of Hadith to examine the position of mothers in education and their relevance to the current context. The results show that Hadith consistently emphasize the role of mothers as the first madrasah for children, with the responsibility to instill values of faith, shape noble morals, and educate children to contribute positively to society. Strategies to strengthen the role of mothers include increasing hadith literacy among women, integrating mothers’ roles into the family education system, and providing institutional support and public policies that strengthen family functions. Furthermore, it was found that enhancing mothers’ roles requires structural support, including adequate religious literacy, a collaborative family ecosystem, and socio-cultural reconstruction that enables women to fulfill their pedagogical functions in an empowered and sustainable manner. In conclusion, the hadith emphasizes that mothers not only play a role in domestic education but also make a major contribution to building the nation’s quality through their children’s education.

Abstract

This article examines the recontextualization of Isrā’īliyyāt in Felix Siauw’s interpretations of the Qur’anic narratives of the Prophets Joseph and Moses. As a popular religious figure among converts in digital media, Felix Siauw’s discourse constitutes a strategic arena for examining the negotiation of Isrā’īliyyāt within contemporary Indonesian social, cultural, and ideological contexts. This study employs a qualitative approach, integrating netnography and content analysis, to analyze Felix’s strategies of contextualization, patterns of audience interaction with the narratives presented, and the hermeneutical constructions underlying his interpretations. The findings indicate that Isrā’īliyyāt are recontextualized by linking prophetic stories to contemporary socio-political issues and popular cultural references, including global conflicts, critiques of state food governance, transnational Muslim concerns, and popular media narratives. Audience responses demonstrate a spectrum of religious literacy, ranging from passive acceptance to critical engagement through practices of verification, critique, and correction. The construction of meaning in Felix’s interpretation of Isrā’īliyyāt draws on the principles of munāsabah, narrative reconstruction, and cultural analogy. Social, artistic, and educational backgrounds, along with post-HTI Islamist ideological orientations, shape variations in prophetic narratives, positioning Qur’anic stories as ideal models for contemporary life. Academically, this study contributes to the theoretical and methodological development of Isrā’īliyyāt studies in the digital age by highlighting how these narratives are negotiated, adapted, and interpreted within contemporary Indonesian digital religious discourse.

Abstract

In the early 20th century, various works of Qur'anic exegesis emerged in West Java after a three-century hiatus. The purpose of this study is to find the relationship between the introduction of the printing press to the Sundanese people and the rise of writing Qur'anic exegesis in West Java in the early 20th century. This study uses a qualitative approach with historical methods that include heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The primary data consists of exegesis books printed in West Java in the early 20th century. Meanwhile, secondary data was collected through literature studies from various relevant scientific works. The results of the study show that in the mid-19th century, the Dutch East Indies colonial government introduced printing presses to the Sundanese community. This ultimately sparked the enthusiasm of the Sundanese menak (nobility) to write books. This tradition then began to encourage Sundanese ulama (Islamic scholars) to produce their own works in various fields of Islamic studies, including Qur’anic exegesis. The findings show a correlation between the introduction of printing presses and the increase in Qur’anic exegesis works in West Java in the early 20th century. This research contributes to enriching our understanding of the dynamics of Qur’anic exegesis writing in West Java by showing that the productivity of ulama was influenced by the interaction between technological developments, the socio-religious context, and the needs of proselytizing at that time.

Abstract

This study aims to reinterpret Q. 4:32 through the perspective of Ma'na-cum-Maghza hermeneutics to assess its relevance in the contemporary discourse on gender justice. This effort aims to overcome patriarchal readings in classical interpretations by reconstructing the historical meaning of the verse and exploring its normative significance for the current socio-religious context. This study uses a text-based qualitative approach through in-depth reading and hermeneutic analysis, comparing classical, medieval and modern interpretations, and integrating Muslim feminist perspectives. The results of the analysis show that Q. 4:32 affirms the agency of both men and women and rejects hierarchical interpretations detrimental to women. The emphasis on divine grace represents broader distributive justice and supports egalitarian principles in gender relations. Through the Ma'na-cum-Maghza framework, this study concludes that Q. 4:32 provides a normative basis for equal pay, recognition of women's roles in domestic and public spaces, and family law reform based on justice and reciprocity. The novelty of this study lies in the application of Ma'na-cum-Maghza as a uniquely Indonesian hermeneutical framework that bridges the historical context with contemporary ethical demands, while strengthening the theological legitimacy for social and legal reform in Muslim societies.

Abstract

Studies on artificial intelligence (AI) ethics and digital ethics have largely been dominated by Western secular paradigms that emphasize technical and regulatory concerns such as transparency, accountability, and procedural fairness, while the metaphysical, spiritual, and philosophical dimensions of Islamic thought remain insufficiently integrated into both global debates and the Indonesian context. In particular, the contributions of classical Islamic philosophy, especially the works of Al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, Al-Ghazali, and Mulla Sadra, have rarely been examined as a comprehensive normative foundation for addressing contemporary challenges in AI ethics and digital transformation. This article, therefore, aims to construct a framework of digital ethics grounded in Islamic philosophy by reinterpreting the ethical insights of classical Muslim philosophers as relevant resources for AI governance, digital education, and technology policy in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative approach with a comparative-philosophical method, the study draws on critical textual analysis of key works in Islamic philosophy and places them in dialogue with global AI ethics frameworks such as the EU AI Act and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The findings demonstrate that Al-Farabi’s conception of the virtuous society and human flourishing (sa‘ādah), Ibn Sina’s integration of knowledge and moral virtue, Al-Ghazali’s spiritual critique of the misuse of knowledge, and Mulla Sadra’s metaphysics of existential becoming collectively form a holistic model of digital ethics grounded in the principles of tawḥīd, ‘adl (justice), ḥikmah (wisdom), and amānah (trust). This framework underscores that AI ethics extends beyond technological risk management to encompass moral virtue formation, social justice, and humanity’s spiritual responsibility as khalīfah fī al-arḍ (vicegerent on earth). The article contributes to the fields of Islamic theology and digital ethics by offering a philosophically grounded Islamic perspective that positions AI as a means for promoting the common good, justice, and the moral–spiritual flourishing of humanity, particularly within Indonesia as a Muslim-majority society undergoing rapid digital transformation

Abstract

This study examines the phrase ummatan wāḥidah in contemporary Sunni and Shi‘i Qur’anic exegesis by comparing Wahbah al-Zuhaylī’s al-Tafsīr al-Munīr and Husayn Faḍlullah’s Min Waḥy al-Qur’ān. The background of this research lies in the enduring tension between Sunni and Shi‘i traditions, which historically framed Qur’anic interpretation as a contested domain of authority and identity. While earlier exegetical works often reinforced sectarian divisions, contemporary interpretations increasingly revisit the Qur’an as a source of unity. Employing Abdul Mustaqim’s paradigm of comparative tafsir with a thematic approach, this article analyzes how both exegetes interpret selected verses containing the phrase ummatan wāḥidah (e.g., Q. 23:52; 21:92; 11:118; 43:33; 2:213, 5:48). The findings show that both al-Zuhaylī and Faḍlullah highlight Islamic unity as grounded in monotheism and the shared mission of prophets, while acknowledging diversity in law and practice as part of divine wisdom. Nevertheless, al-Zuhaylī tends to emphasize Islam’s role in restoring authentic monotheism and distinguishing constructive differences from destructive division, whereas Faḍlullah stresses the inclusivity of revelation and the ethical imperative of transcending sectarianism. The study concludes that despite their doctrinal differences, both exegetes employ ummatan wāḥidah as a hermeneutical bridge toward inter-Muslim rapprochement, offering a potential framework for fostering unity in contemporary Islamic thought.
