Abstract

Climate change constitutes a global challenge that requires not only technological and policy-based responses but also value-oriented and spiritual engagement. This qualitative study examines the resonance of Islamic values on environmental preservation through religious communication in the context of global climate change, focusing on Probolinggo Regency, East Java. Using a phenomenological case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving religious leaders, environmentally affected community members, and local policy actors. The findings indicate that Islamic values such as khalifah (human stewardship of the earth) and amanah (moral responsibility) are actively communicated through sermons, religious gatherings, and informal religious forums. These values function as ethical narratives that resonate with the community by shaping ecological awareness and moral reflection regarding environmental degradation. Religious messages emphasizing the prohibition of environmental harm (la darar), justice (‘adl), and moderation (anti-israf) contextualize climate-related issues such as coastal erosion and land degradation experienced locally. The study also reveals a gap between the normative transmission of Islamic environmental values and their translation into sustained collective action. While religious communication succeeds in fostering moral awareness, its resonance remains uneven due to socio-economic, structural, and institutional constraints. This study argues that strengthening the resonance of Islamic values requires their integration into religious education, community-based communication strategies, and environmentally responsive public policies. Effective religious communication can transform Islamic values into practical ecological ethics, reinforcing Islam’s role as rahmatan lil ‘alamin and contributing to climate resilience and environmental justice in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

The “Marriage Is Scary” phenomenon circulating on TikTok reflects the growing fear, hesitation, and anxiety among young generations toward the institution of marriage. This trend not only signifies a shift in value orientation but also opens a new dialogical space within religious discourse on social media. This study aims to examine how TikTok functions as a platform for da‘wah dialogue on marriage through content creators’ responses to the issue. Employing a qualitative approach with an interpretative content analysis method, this research analyzes a selection of the most popular videos featuring the “Marriage Is Scary” narrative and the da‘wah-oriented responses that emerge as counter-narratives. The findings reveal that TikTok provides an interactive space for young people to articulate their fears and personal experiences, while simultaneously offering opportunities for digital preachers to present religious perspectives that are moderate, solution-oriented, and grounded in prophetic values. Effective da‘wah in this context tends to adopt persuasive, empathetic, and narrative communication styles, emphasizing the wisdom of marriage in Islam without disregarding the social realities faced by adolescents and young adults. This study underscores that social media, particularly TikTok, is not merely an arena for entertainment, but also a dialogical space for da‘wah that can bridge the gap in religious literacy among the digital generation, especially concerning sensitive issues such as fear of marriage.

Abstract

The development of information and communication technology has brought significant changes to the practice of Islamic da'wah. Da'wah is no longer limited to conventional methods such as face-to-face lectures, but has evolved through the use of more creative and adaptive digital media. This article aims to examine the modernization of da'wah through the use of animated films in the digital era as an effective medium for conveying Islamic messages, especially to the digital native generation. This research uses a literature study method by reviewing various books, journal articles, and scientific sources relevant to digital da'wah and animated media. The results of the study indicate that animated films have great potential as a da'wah medium because they can present religious messages in an engaging, educational, and easily accessible manner without the constraints of space and time. Furthermore, the visual and narrative characters in animated films can build emotional appeal and influence the character formation of audiences, especially children and the younger generation. Thus, animated films can be seen as a relevant and strategic form of da'wah modernization in responding to the challenges and opportunities of da'wah in the digital era.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of religious understanding in the context of parenting the Beta generation, a generation born in the post-digital era with a high dependence on technology. This shift indicates that digital media has become the primary source of religious information for adolescents, replacing traditional methods such as lectures or direct interpretation. In this context, parents face the challenge of bridging traditional religious values with the habits of children growing up in a digital ecosystem. The research method used was a qualitative phenomenological approach to explore parenting experiences and practices in Surabaya. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies with parents and religious leaders. Descriptive phenomenological analysis was applied to identify key patterns in the transformation of religious understanding influenced by technology. The results show that parents adopt various strategies in educating their children, including the use of faith-based applications, but there is a variation in the reception of religious values, ranging from full acceptance to negotiation and rejection. Key challenges include the fragmentation of digital information and the gap in understanding between generations. This research contributes to the development of practical guidance for parents in integrating religious values with technology-based parenting.

Abstract

Social media has become a real time channel through which police public relations units communicate with the public, and TikTok's algorithm driven distribution can allow an issue to escalate before an institution has verified the facts or prepared a response. This problem became visible when a TikTok video alleging a wrongful arrest by members of the Criminal Investigation Unit of Polres Blitar went viral in December 2025, generating widespread public reaction before any official clarification was issued. This study examines the issue management process, monitoring mechanism, and clarification efforts carried out by the Cyber Patrol Unit of Polres Blitar's Public Relations Division in response to this issue. A descriptive qualitative approach was used, drawing on Chase's (1984) issue management theory; primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews with the Head of the Public Relations Section as the key informant, together with a Cyber Patrol Unit member, a public relations administrative staff member, and a content observer as supporting informants, complemented by observation and documentation of official records and online content. The findings show that the issue management process follows five stages: issue identification, issue analysis, response-strategy formulation, communication implementation, and evaluation. Monitoring is conducted systematically through daily cyber patrols that track hashtag trends and viral content on TikTok, and the response strategy involves cross functional coordination with the Criminal Investigation Unit to produce fact based clarifications disseminated through a counter opinion approach via official Public Relations channels and online media. While the clarifications reached a wider audience, an observer's account suggests that their persuasive effect may have been constrained by how emotionally engaged and response oriented TikTok audiences tend to be toward this kind of issue, a pattern that warrants closer empirical investigation. These findings offer practical guidance for regional police public relations units seeking to design more adaptive, platform sensitive issue management practices for fast moving, short video social media.

Abstract

Film is an audiovisual communication medium that functions not only as entertainment but also as a medium for representing social, cultural, moral, and spiritual messages through the system of signs constructed within its narrative. This study aims to analyze the representation of transcendental communication through the symbol of letters in the film Titip Surat untuk Tuhan using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. This research employed a qualitative method with a semiotic analysis approach. Data were collected through observations of scenes, dialogues, and visual elements featuring letters as symbolic objects and were analyzed using Barthes' three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings indicate that the meaning of the letter evolves from a written communication medium into a representation of transcendental communication between humans and God. At the denotative level, the letter functions as a medium for conveying messages. At the connotative level, it represents prayer, hope, and human surrender to God. At the mythological level, the letter constructs the belief that prayers may receive answers through various forms of divine assistance represented in the film. The findings demonstrate that a simple symbol can convey complex spiritual meanings through the film's visual and narrative construction. This study also reinforces Jalaluddin Rakhmat's concept of transcendental communication and confirms that Roland Barthes' semiotic approach is relevant for analyzing the representation of transcendental communication in audiovisual media. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on the letter as the primary symbol representing transcendental communication in film.

Abstract

Live streaming has developed into one of the digital media used as a means of conducting online religious study sessions (pengajian) because it enables direct and interactive communication. This study aims to analyze the role of live streaming on the TikTok account @kadamsidik00 (Husain Basyaiban) in conveying religious messages, interacting with the audience, and strengthening digital da'wah practices. The research employs a qualitative method with a contentanalysis approach. Data were obtained through observation of live broadcasts, documentation of activities, and content analysis of the da'wah messages delivered. The findings show that live streaming functions as a communicative medium that is interactive and responsive to audience needs. The live broadcast feature not only facilitates the delivery of religious material but also opens a space for dialogue through question and answer sessions, strengthens the closeness between the preacher (dā'ī) and the congregation, and expands the reach of da'wah messages. In addition, the use of this medium shapes a pattern of da'wah communication that is more adaptive to the characteristics of social media users. The study concludes that live streaming is an effective means of supporting online religious study sessions because it offers flexible access, more intensive interaction, and relevance to the development of digital communication technology.

Abstract

The evolution of social media has shifted the delivery of dakwah (Islamic outreach) from conventional methods to a more interactive digital format. Instagram has emerged as a key platform utilized by Islamic educational institutions including the @pesantrennuruljadid account to disseminate dakwah messages through visually engaging, educational, and communicative content. This study aims to analyze how dakwah messages are represented on the @pesantrennuruljadid Instagram account and to examine the responses of Nurul Jadid University students (mahasantri) to these messages through the lens of religious literacy. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study gathered data via observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of Instagram content, which were subsequently analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings reveal that the dakwah messages on the @pesantrennuruljadid account incorporate values related to aqidah, sharia, and akhlaq, alongside the reinforcement of Islamic character; these are conveyed through visual designs, short videos (Reels), dakwah posters, documentation of pesantren activities, and accessible narratives. Student responses were generally positive, as the content broadened their religious insights, deepened their understanding of Islamic values, and boosted their motivation to practice their faith. However, the effectiveness of these messages is also influenced by factors such as digital literacy levels, the ability to grasp the context of the message, and the students' consistency in verifying religious information found on social media. In conclusion, the @pesantrennuruljadid account plays a significant role in representing dakwah messages and fostering religious literacy among students. Consequently, the management of dakwah content ensuring it remains credible, educational, and aligned with the needs of the digital generation must be continuously enhanced.
