Abstract

Motivational currents have recently gained popularity in research on psychology of language learners and teachers. This study aims to find out whether an overseas teaching program can (1) create motivational currents among Indonesian pre-service teachers and (2) help them build a vivid vision of being a language teacher. This research used retrodictive qualitative modelling (RQM) under a complex dynamic system (CDS) approach to trace back the factors that enabled the motivational currents to occur. The data were collected from semi-structured interviews along with day-to-day diaries of six EFL pre-service teachers in Indonesia. The findings suggest that the overseas teaching program could create motivational currents of three participants while the rest did not experience such intense motivation. This study also finds that there is a dynamic relationship between self-system and motivational currents system. The impact of experiencing the motivational currents on the vision of being a language teacher varies from one participant to another. This study is of great importance especially for teacher educators wishing to design meaningful and effective professional development activities for their student teachers.

Abstract

Not all aspects of Western culture, reflected in the language used in Walt Disney’s Donald Duck comics, are acceptable in Indonesia. So, in translating the comics, the translators have to manipulate the text for it to be acceptable by the target readers and parents. This research aims at finding out censorship through the translation techniques used by the translators in translating the English humorous texts in the Walt Disney’s Donald Duck comics into Indonesian and the reasons underlying the translators’ choice of the translation techniques. It also aims at analysing whether or not the choice of the translation techniques affects the rendering of meaning, maintenance of humour, and acceptability of the translation. For these purposes a qualitative method was employed with content analysis technique and reader response analysis. Content analysis was used in comparing the source text (ST) and target text (TT) to find out the translation techniques used as a means of censorship and to find out the translators’ reasons for choosing the techniques. Reader-response analysis was done to find out the readers’ response to the rendering of meaning and maintenance of humour in the translation. The research findings discovered that the translators performed censorship through the dominant use of reduction and generalisation techniques so as to reduce sarcasm and insults. The interview with the publisher’s Senior Editor also revealed that “decency” was the first priority in the translation decision making, followed by clarity of meaning and maintenance of humour.  Further research to investigate other elements censored, and compared with other translated comics is recommended.

Abstract

Abstract: This paper tried to show how conversational coherence is achieved within talk shows, what strategies used by both host and interviewee to achieve coherence collaboratively. It was shown that in both English and Indonesian talk shows, conversational activity of asking questions can be employed to measure a coherence of a stretch of conversation. Question-answer adjacency pairs can provide the framework through which coherence is achieved, and they have two possibilities to be agreed or disagreed with. This is clear from the English talk show instead of the Indonesian one. The way speakers taking turn and the occurrence of overlap within the sequence of conversation can also determine mutual understanding among the participants. However, the Indonesian talk show offers a longer answer pair compared with the English one. Both talk shows, in fact, share the similar indicators and use similar strategies in order to achieve coherence across the talk show sessions. Speaker’s hesitation is found more in the Indonesian talk show instead of the English one. Another marker of coherence, overlap onset, also occurs a lot in both talk shows. The way speakers (host and interviewee) maintain the topic throughout the talk supports the notion that mutual understanding is successfully achieved. Meanwhile, culture is considered not too influential in determining different ways of maintaining the flow of the talk. Both talk shows use similar patterns with no significant difference in terms of culture. They differ only in the level of conversational devices used which is related to language use instead of cultural background. Keywords: coherence, adjacency pairs, turn-taking, talk shows Abstrak: Studi ini mencoba menunjukkan bagaimana koherensi percakapan dicapai dalam talk show, strategi apa yang digunakan oleh pembawa acara serta tamu yang diwawancarai untuk mencapai koherensi secara kolaboratif. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa dalam talk show berbahasa Inggris maupun Indonesia, cara mengajukan pertanyaan dapat digunakan untuk mengukur koherensi dalam percakapan. Pasangan bersesuaian (adjacency pairs) dapat memberikan kerangka di mana koherensi dicapai, hal ini lebih jelas terlihat dalam talk show berbahasa Inggris. Cara mengambil giliran tutur dan terjadinya tumpang tindih dalam urutan percakapan juga dapat menentukan pemahaman di antara penutur. Dalam talk show berbahasa Indonesia, pemberian jawaban yang mengandung keragu-raguan lebih banyak ditemukan. Kedua talk show menunjukkan indikator yang sama dan menggunakan strategi yang sama untuk mencapai koherensi dalam sesi tanya jawab. Tumpang tindih kalimat (overlap onset), juga banyak ditemukan dalam kedua talk show. Cara pembawa acara dan tamu yang diwawancarai untuk mempertahankan topik pembicaraan menunjukkan bahwa saling pengertian berhasil dicapai. Sementara itu, kebudayaan dianggap tidak terlalu berpengaruh dalam menentukan perbedaancara dalam mempertahankan alur pembicaraan. Pada kedua talk show tidak ditemukan perbedaan yang signifikan dalam hal budaya. Mereka hanya berbeda dalam tingkat perangkat percakapan yang digunakan yang berkaitan dengan penggunaan bahasa bukan latar belakang budaya. Kata kunci: koherensi, pasangan bersesuaian, giliran tutur, talk shows

Abstract

The purpose of this inquiry is to explore and make sense of the stories of Indonesian graduate students’ speaking experiences in the academic settings during their study in a United Kingdom university. More specifically, the study is intended to understand their speaking challenges and strategies to overcome the challenges both in classroom and university-surrounding settings. To achieve the purpose of the study, narrative inquiry is employed. Two Indonesian graduate students participated in this study and shared the experiences before and after coming to study in the university. The findings of this narrative inquiry indicate that language-related issues, individual factors, and cultural differences hinder the participants from actively being involved in the verbal communication. To cope with the challenges, the participants applied communication strategies by asking for clarification and repetition. The study suggests that language mastery, including accent, is crucial because it influences the understanding in communication.

Abstract

Abstract: Putting more attention on teaching language skills, the use of literature in EFL classrooms is often abandoned. While essentially, exploiting literary texts in some advanced EFL courses, serves a variety of purposes, dedicated to encourage interactive and communicative classes for language learners at different levels of proficiency. Literary texts often offer cultural explorations through the embedded cultural contexts in the stories. Indeed, exploring literary works provides an exercise in cultural relativity, so that students are more aware of the cultural differences presented in various contexts. Both teachers and students need to get involved in class discussions and activities which are created to support deep exploration of cultures in the texts. This paper reports on the use of literature circles in an advanced EFL classroom to reinforce students‘ cultural awareness through the examination of classic literatures as well as contemporary realist fiction. The two genres of literatures also bring about multicultural issues which are worth noting in an attempt of developing students‘ cutural awareness. In the research, it is further found that distributing students in small discussion groups has encouraged more ―talking‖ and improved students‘ written responses. In addition, teachers discovered that cultural values and attitudes are easily transferred through the characters in the literary works.Keywords: literature circles in EFL classroom, classic literatures, contemporary realist fictions.

Abstract

This paper shows how analyzing styles in fiction can be achieved in three ways: an in-depth examination of the role assignment of lexico-syntactic features, categorization of the choices in combining words, and examination of strategies in presenting characters’ perspectives. It offers ways on how to guide students in English as a second language (ESL) in analyzing and appreciating English fiction. It aims to equip them with language tools in evaluating a writer’s intended and desired aesthetic effects by using chosen linguistic features. To achieve this objective, this paper applies M.A.K. Halliday’s systemic-functional grammatical model illustrating how language works in Joyce’s Eveline, a short story. Specifically, this paper shows how EFL or ESL students can acquire a deeper appreciation of the worldview, perspective, or point of view of the author and his characters. Also, it illustrates how they may have a deeper appreciation of the craft, originality, and ingenuity of an author. Moreover, it demonstrates how using different techniques in speech and thought presentation could be made accessible by showing how rendering thoughts, feelings, and expressions can offer new perceptions and appreciations of what seems to be habitualized and ineffectual.

Abstract

The study investigated the relationship between the personality typology of a sample of Iranian translation students and their translation quality in terms of expressive, appellative, and informative text types. The study also attempted to identify the personality types that can perform better in English to Persian translation of the three text types. For that purpose, the personality type and the translation quality of the participants was assessed using Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality test and translation quality assessment (TQA), respectively. The analysis of the data revealed that the personality type of the participants seemed relevant to the translation quality of all the text types. The translation quality of the participants with intuitive and thinking types was significantly better than the sensing type counterparts in translating expressive texts. The participants with intuitive and feeling types also performed better than their counterparts with sensing type in translation of the informative text. Moreover, the participants with intuitive, feeling, and thinking personality types performed more successfully than the participants with sensing type in translation of the appellative text. The findings of the study are discussed in light of the existing research literature.

Abstract

The implementation of curriculum is considered as one of the most prominent phases in developing 2013 primary and secondary curriculum in Indonesia, and this is greatly influenced by teachers’ readiness and competence. This research aims to investigate teachers’ readiness and competence to implement the 2013 Curriculum, particularly viewed from their comprehension about the syllabus of English subject and its development into lesson plans based on the principles of syllabus development as suggested in the curriculum, as well as their ability and their self-efficacy in implementing the curriculum in classroom teaching and learning processes. Twelve senior high school teachers from different schools were assigned to complete a questionnaire about their readiness and competence to implement the 2013 curriculum and were observed in their teaching and learning process. Both quantitative and qualitative analysis were employed in the research. Results from quantitative analysis showed that teachers’ readiness to implement the curriculum had low correlation on their competence. Qualitative analysis revealed that teachers had adequate readiness to implement the curriculum and competence to develop lesson planning. For further studies, studies on the aspects of teachers’ attitude, motivation, belief, and commitment to implement the 2013 curriculum need to be further investigated.

Abstract

This study adopts a functional approach to investigate specific discourse markers employed by L1 English and L2 English users in non-native English speaking contexts. Twenty-four academic essays were voluntarily submitted by the students for analysis. Primarily, Fraser’s (2009) taxonomy was used to identify discourse markers and to know its use in writing academic essays. Findings indicate that there were notable differences between L1 and L2 users in using discourse markers, specifically in its frequency and functions. Accordingly, L1 English users’ writings frequently displayed elaborative markers followed by temporal, inferential, and contransitive discourses. Meanwhile, L2 English users’ writings showed the overuse of certain discourse types such as temporal and inferential markers. In the coding of data, it was also revealed the L2 users’ overused of discourse markers resulted in incoherent texts. Language teachers may need to raise awareness of how discourse markers can be used variably in writing academic essays.

Abstract

An experimental investigation was conducted to compare preferred models of English for personal, national, and global communication in ELF context between Filipinos and Indians. Drawing upon the data gathered through questionnaire and accent recognition survey from over 200 undergraduate students in these two nations, it was revealed that both nationals prefer British English for personal communication. But for national communication, Indians prefer their own standardized variety of English, i.e. Indian English, while the majority of Filipinos chose American English. British English and American English are considered to be the most ideal English varieties to express global identity by Indians and Filipinos, respectively. Finally, the degree of familiarity with the native English varieties which was higher among Filipinos than Indians is inversely proportional to level of awareness of their standard local English variety. Implications of the results and future research directions were also presented.
