EDITORIAL SPEECH Advancing Critical Scholarship, Ethical Reflection, and the Future of Islamicate Studies Islamicate Futures: Knowledge, Ethics, and Muslim Societies (IFKEMS) Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh. With gratitude and a profound commitment to academic excellence, we welcome scholars, researchers, and readers to Islamicate Futures: Knowledge, Ethics, and Muslim Societies (IFKEMS), an international, peer-reviewed, open-access scholarly journal published by Bahtera Al Fikr Press, part of Institut Bahtera Studi Islam, Indonesia. The establishment of this journal reflects our conviction that Islamic and Islamicate studies must continue to evolve through rigorous scholarship, critical engagement, and interdisciplinary dialogue. In an era characterized by technological transformation, environmental challenges, shifting social structures, and complex ethical questions, the study of Islamic intellectual traditions requires approaches that are historically informed, methodologically robust, and responsive to contemporary realities. IFKEMS provides an academic platform for examining the dynamic relationships between knowledge, ethics, religious authority, and Muslim societies. Our intellectual orientation recognizes Islamic traditions as historically diverse and intellectually rich fields of inquiry that invite continuous investigation, interpretation, and scholarly debate. We therefore encourage contributions that move beyond descriptive accounts toward theoretically grounded analysis, empirical investigation, and critical reflection. The journal welcomes scholarship addressing Islamic thought, Qur’anic and Hadith studies, Islamic jurisprudence, maqāṣid al-sharīʿah, religious ethics, Islamic education, Muslim societies, public policy, digital religion, environmental sustainability, and emerging interdisciplinary debates. Particular attention is given to research exploring how Islamic intellectual resources interact with contemporary questions concerning human dignity, justice, governance, artificial intelligence, ecological responsibility, and social transformation. Our editorial philosophy is founded on the principles of academic independence, intellectual openness, methodological transparency, and scholarly integrity. We recognize that meaningful academic contributions emerge not merely from reaffirming established perspectives, but also from critically examining assumptions, engaging alternative interpretations, and developing arguments supported by credible evidence. To uphold these principles, IFKEMS implements editorial screening and a double-blind peer-review process involving at least two independent reviewers. We are committed to responsible publication practices, constructive academic evaluation, originality, and respect for diverse scholarly perspectives. Through immediate open access under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License, we also seek to promote equitable access to knowledge and broaden the dissemination of research across institutional and geographical boundaries. Our ambition extends beyond maintaining a regular publication schedule. We seek to cultivate a sustainable international scholarly community in which researchers from different disciplinary, intellectual, and cultural backgrounds can exchange ideas, challenge prevailing interpretations, and contribute to the advancement of Islamicate studies. International engagement, however, must be accompanied by substantive academic quality, ethical responsibility, and demonstrable contributions to knowledge. We extend our sincere appreciation to the authors, reviewers, editorial board members, publishing team, and academic partners whose dedication supports the development of this journal. Their contributions are essential to establishing IFKEMS as a credible and intellectually productive space for scholarly communication. We warmly invite researchers and scholars worldwide to participate in this academic endeavor by submitting original research, engaging in constructive peer review, and contributing to critical conversations about the historical trajectories, contemporary realities, and future possibilities of Islamic knowledge and Muslim societies. We believe that the enduring significance of scholarship lies in its capacity to generate new understanding, deepen intellectual dialogue, and address important questions with analytical rigor and ethical responsibility. May Islamicate Futures: Knowledge, Ethics, and Muslim Societies continue to serve as an open and constructive forum for advancing knowledge, encouraging critical inquiry, and strengthening interdisciplinary scholarship.
