Abstract

Every learner or group of learners at a certain stage of learning may have certaindifficulties of their own; so is the case with students undertaking English readingcomprehension. There are reading skills presenting reading difficulties toIndonesian learners. Some of them can be overcome at early stages of theirlearning; some others remain inherent problems throughout their study. Teachersfrequently assume that everything they previously presented to their students hasbeen understood and put into practice by their students. The fact is that it is notalways the case. It often turns out that the learners are still not yet able to apply theknowledge that has been taught or the reading skills that has been developed. Thishappens because of incomplete understanding or lack of practice or due to thecomplexity of the language features being studied. On the basis of the writer'sobservation and experience in teaching reading comprehension and translation, the writer opines that there are some language features and constructions inEnglish which present typical problems even to such Indonesian advancedlearners as students at the English Language Education Department, Faculty ofLanguages and Arts, State University of Yogyakarta, in their fourth to eighthsemesters. Those language features and constructions are, among others, nounphrases, free adjuncts or participial phrases, the formal it, the pronouns that andthose, clues to subject-predicate identification, various word functions andmeanings (included in word identification), signals for reading between the lines, and discourse markers. Keywords: typical reading problems, reading skills

Abstract

It is already generally assumed that women possess characteristicsdistinguishing them from men. One of these characteristics is in their languageuse. Women's language is considered different from men's. In this context, theterm sexist appears. Sexist language represents women and men differently. Suchlanguage also represents women's and men's stereotypes, which is sometimesharmful to both sexes but is more often harmful to women only. Understandingwomen's language involves at least four perspective. First, women's language isperceived as a system of representation, meaning that it is a method of stating orverbalizing a certain event, experience, view, and reality in life. Second, women'slanguage is perceived as a site for social struggle containing a variety of women'sideologies. Third, women's language is perceived as showing women's corneredposition. Fourth, women's language is perceived as showing a relation betweenlanguage and gender where there is asymmetry in language representationbetween men and women. Keywords : women's language, representation, theory of domination, theory ofdifference, gender analysis

Abstract

The grammar of the Indonesian language is greatly made use of inpolitical discourse and especially after the era of the Old Order. Via grammaticalforms, the political elite fights for its power and ideology, both explicitly andimplicitly, causing an unbalanced political communication. A research study thisarticle is about was conducted to (1) describe and interpret the utilization ofgrammaticality in political discourse and (2) clarify why certain grammaticalforms are paid special attention while others are not.The study applied a critical qualitative approach with a "critical discourseanalysis" design from Fairclough (1989: 1995). In this perspective, no textproduced by the political elite is neutral from political interest. Discourse is asocial construction and results from social-historical and political conditions. There is no discourse which is a social vacuum. Discourse is a social creationreflecting the interests of certain social groups. The research results indicate that (1) each group of the Indonesianpolitical elite uses transitivity with material meaning, agent nominalization, thepassive voice, and the negative form to show its power and hide its ideologicalposition, (2) each assumes the role of information provider, shows its authority inthe presence of the other groups and the Indonesian society, and asserts its powerby choosing to use the personal pronouns we and I, (3) it makes considerable use ofmodality expressing authority, and (4) there are institutional and cultural processesexplaining why certain grammatical forms are paid special attention while othersare not. Keywords: grammaticality, political discourse
