Abstract

This study aims to describe woman trafficking practice in modern Javanese fiction. Woman trafficking was analyzed based on the ideology and causes using New Historicism theory. The findings show that woman trafficking experienced by the characters in all of the stories is the same. They are deceived by procurers and sold as prostitutes in Indonesia and abroad. There are three causes of womantrafficking, i.e. a view looking down on women, woman dependency, and women’s poverty and low education. The stories of woman trafficking support feminism more. Women as victims of woman trafficking can get freedom and autonomy. Feminism ideology is also supported by men. The male characters help the female characters release themselves from woman trafficking by accepting them as their partners.

Abstract

This study is an analysis of three poems Thirty Eighth Year, Miss Rosie and final note to clark written by Lucille Clifton, a contemporary black American poet and writer. It intends to find out what the works articulate, showing the feminist voice. The analysis was conducted sociologically based on the selection criteria that they have the same theme as the common ground, and the data were collected through library research. The results show that the speakers of the poems articulate their consciousness of self-worthvoicing basic feminist perspective against confining domestic life, white hegemonic beauty standard, and male role in black American household.

Abstract

This study aims to describe female characters’ self-defense against conflicts. It was carried out using the qualitative approach. The general finding shows that women use the self-defense against conflicts to avoid social and psychological disharmony. Female characters in Indonesian fictional prose serve as authors’ means of expressing ideas. To develop characters’ characterization, authors make female characters face a variety ofconflicts in life. They use techniques to develop characters with capabilities of defending the self against conflicts through an attempt reflecting an attitudinal wisdom in problem solving. The characters’ capabilities are attributable to life experience, education, tradition, life principles, and religions they believe in.
