Abstract

This text explores psychology as part of the implicit message within the teachings of Islam. However, the psychological insights present in the Qur'an have not received serious attention. As a scientific discipline, psychology was only recognized in the late 18th century, but its roots can be traced back to the time of Plato. As a modern science, psychology has advanced significantly. The concept of “Nafs” (soul), which is a crucial aspect of psychological analysis, is mentioned over three hundred times in the Qur'an and Hadith, yet a horizontally oriented psychology did not emerge in the classical Islamic scholarly tradition. Scholars tended to discuss it more from the perspectives of ethics and Sufism, which are more vertically oriented. It was only in the 1950s that Muslim intellectuals, who studied in the West, began to show interest in the study of psychology. Furthermore, there have been efforts to offer alternative concepts of psychology, namely psychology from an Islamic perspective.

Abstract

This text discusses the teachings of the Seven Degrees within Javanese literature. The study is based on two sources, namely the Javanese version of Tuhfah written around 1680, and Serat Centini written in the early 19th century. The Seven Degrees doctrine in Javanese literature is presented in the form of poems containing terms related to the seven degrees, such as Ahadiyah, Wahdah, Wahidyah, la ta’yun, and the essence of Muhammadiyah. However, the terms used in Serat Centini have undergone slight changes, both in the spelling of certain letters and specific words. This is associated with the passage of time, allowing for the influence of Javanese culture.

Abstract

This writing analyzes the roots of the Seven Degrees. Linguistically, “martabat tujuh” translates to seven levels or stages. In terms of terminology, the Seven Degrees is a theory used to explain the occurrence of the universe within the framework of an emanation system. Despite being presented in various forms and versions, the theory is inherently monistic and is based on the same worldview, namely that the visible world flows from the Ultimate Singular. Upon examination, the systematic nature of the Seven Degrees can be traced back to Muhammad Ibnu Fadlillah al-Burhanpuri (d. 1620).

Abstract

This writing presents the concepts of “maqāmāt” and “aḥwāl” in Sufism. “Maqāmāt” refers to the creative spiritual path undertaken by Sufis to approach and encounter God. It (maqāmāt) must be strived for (makāsib) with the entirety of one’s soul and body. True to its name, it is fixed and permanent. On the other hand, “aḥwāl” are the mental and spiritual states experienced by Sufis as a result of “maqāmāt.” It is considered a divine gift (mawāhib), cannot be attained through effort, and is subject to change. However, in the view of some Sufi groups, both are considered gifts.

Abstract

Abstract

This writing discusses the mapping of the results of the Islamization process by scholars in Kendal, a district adjacent to Semarang, the capital of Central Java. Despite the efforts of reform initiated by Kendal’s own scholars who sought knowledge in Mecca, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries, traces of pre-Islamic customs still persist among the common people and have not been completely eradicated. This article reveals the religious practices among the supporters of small traditions within the Muslim community in Kendal.
