Abstract

This research aim to: (1) describe kinds of grammatical errors that are most frequently committed by the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 3 Denpasar in reservation practice, and (2) explain the sources of errors made by the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 3 Denpasar in reservation practice. The subjects of this study were the eleventh grade students of Hotel Accommodation Program at SMK Negeri 3 Denpasar. This research was designed as qualitative descriptive research. This study used video camera, coding sheets, questionnaire, and interview guide as the instruments in collecting data. After the data were collected, the data were transcribed, classified and analyzed, counted, and then the results were described. This study used Abisamra’s and Sawalmeh’s theory to know the types of grammatical errors that commonly made by EFL learners in learning English. The results of this study show that the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 3 Denpasar committed eight types of grammatical errors in reservation practice. These errors were verb error, noun error, adjective error, article error, pronoun error, preposition error, sentence fragment error, and word order error. There were 344 errors among 30 students were found and verb error as the most frequently errors committed by the students in reservation practice. The sources of errors were found based on Brown’s theory such as interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer, context of learning, and communication strategies. Interlingual transfer as the highest reason the students committed errors. It was because the students were interfered by the rules of their native language when they speaking in English. keyword : Grammatical Errors, Reservation Practice

Abstract

This research aims at investigating (1) the contribution of students’ self-efficacy toward students’ speaking achievement, (2) the contribution of students’ anxiety toward students’ speaking achievement, and (3) the contribution of students’ self-efficacy and anxiety toward students’ speaking achievement at eighth grade students in SMP N 1 Denpasar. This research used ex-post facto research design. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Denpasar. 75 students were selected as sample of this research by using simple random sampling technique. The data were collected by employing Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale, and Speaking Documentation. The data showed that the students’ self-efficacy, anxiety, and speaking achievement are categorized in the moderate level. The collected data were analyzed by using simple and multiple regression. The result of analysis showed that: (1) there is contribution of students’ self-efficacy toward students’ speaking achievement at 53.1%, (2) there is contribution of students’ anxiety toward students’ speaking achievement at 9.8%, and (3) there is contribution of students’ self-efficacy and anxiety toward students’ speaking achievement at 56.2%. In detail, the effective contribution of self-efficacy is 50.27% and effective contribution anxiety is 5.92% toward students’ speaking achievement.keyword : Anxiety, Self-Efficacy, and Speaking Achievement

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa kelas 8 di SMP N 4 Singaraja dengan menggunakan strategi DRTA. Observasi awal menunjukkan bahwa murid kelas VIIIB3 memiliki kompetensi yang rendah dalam pemahaman membaca. Subyek dari penelitian ini adalah 36 siswa. Untuk menemukan hasil dari pelaksanaan strategi DRTA terhadap pemahaman membaca siswa, peneliti menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK) sebagai metode penelitian. Dalam penelitian ini, ada dua cycle yang dilaksanakan dalam kelas. Setiap cycle terdiri dari empat aktivitas, yaitu perencanaan, aksi, observasi, dan refleksi. Untuk mendapatkan dan menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan hasil dari observasi awal, evaluasi dari cycle I dan II, buku harian peneliti, dan kuesioner. Respon siswa bagus terhadap strategi ini. Mereka mengatakan bahwa mereka menyukai kelas membaca karena strategi ini membantu mereka dalam mengetahui konten teks. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan strategi DRTA mampu meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Hasil dari tes mean siswa bisa dijelaskan sebagai berikut: Dalam pre-observasi, skor mean siswa adalah 69.28. Dalam cycle I, skor mean dari siswa meningkat menjadi 75.22. Setelah cycle I dilakukan, skor mean siswa meningkat lagi menjadi 84.06. Dari hasil tersebut, bisa disimpulkan bahwa pelaksanaan strategi Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) bisa meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa kelas VIIIB3 di SMP N 4 Singaraja. Kata Kunci : Kata Kunci: Membaca, pemahaman membaca, strategi DRTA This study was conducted in order to improve the reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMP N 4 Singaraja by using DRTA strategy. The preliminary observation showed that students of VIIIB3 had low competency in reading comprehension. The subjects of this study were 36 students. In order to find out the result of the implementation of DRTA strategy toward students’ reading comprehension, the researcher used classroom action research (CAR) as the research method. In this study, there were two cycles conducted in classroom. Each cycle consisted of four activities, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. To obtain and also analyze the data, the researcher used the result of pre-observation, evaluation in cycle I and II, researcher’s diary, and questionnaire. The students’ responses were good toward this strategy. They stated that they liked in having reading class because this strategy helped them in understanding the content of texts. This study showed that the use of DRTA strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension. The result of the mean test of students can be stated as follows: In pre-observation, the students’ mean score was 69.28. In cycle I, the mean score of the students increased into 75.22. After the second cycle had been conducted, the students’ mean score increased again into 84.06. From the result, it can be concluded that the implementation of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy could improve reading competency of VIIIB3 students in SMP N 4 Singaraja.keyword : Reading, reading comprehension, DRTA strategy

Abstract

Penelitian qualitative ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis penggunaan bahasa oleh penduduk Desa Sinduwati. Pengumpulan data dilakukan didalam lima ranah penggunaan bahasa. Kelima ranah penggunaan bahasa tersebut adalah keluarga, transaksi, pertemanan, tetangga, dan agama. Untuk mendapatkan lebih banyak data tentang penggunaan bahasa, peneliti mewawancarai dua belas orang penduduk desa. Dua belas orang tersebut diwawancarai tentang bahasa yang digunakan ketika berbicara didalam kelima domain penggunaan bahasa. Peneliti melakukan observasi, interview, and pengambilan gambar untuk mendapatkan data yang diperlukan. Data yang didapat kemudian ditranskrip dan dianalisis. Dalam pengumpulan, peneliti menggunakan beberapa instrumen seperti catatan lapangan, panduan wawancara, perekam suara, dan kamera. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat dua bahasa yang digunakan oleh penduduk desa. Kedua bahasa itu adalah Bahasa Bali dan Bahasa Indonesia. Alih kode dan campur kode juga digunakan oleh penduduk desa ketika mereka berkomunikasi. Dalam alih kode, tag switching paling banyak digunakan oleh masyarakat desa Sinduwati. Sementara, dalam campur kode, yang paling banyak digunakan oleh masayarakat desa tersebut adalah campur kode antara Bahasa Bali dan Bahasa Indonesia. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapa dua bahasa yang paling sering digunakan oleh penduduk muslim Desa Sinduwati dan ketika mereka berkomunikasi mereka menggunakan alih kode dan campur kode. Kata Kunci : alih kode, campur kode, domain penggunaan bahasa, penggunaan bahasa This qualitative research aimed to analyze codes used by the Moslem people in Sinduwati village. The data were collected in five domains of language use. The five domains of language use in this research were family, transaction, friendship, neighborhood, and religion. The researcher interviewed twelve villagers to get more data about codes used in the village. The people were asked about what language they speak based on the five domains of language use. Observation, interview, and documentation were done by the researcher to get the data needed. The data gathered were transcribed and analyzed. In collecting the data, some instruments like field note, interview guide, voice recorder, and camera were used. The results showed that there are two codes used in the village. Those two codes were Balinese language and Bahasa Indonesia. Code Switching and Code Mixing are also used by the villagers when they communicate. In code switching, tag switching is used the most by the villager. In code mixing, insertion code mixing between Balinese language and Bahasa Indonesia is used the most by the villagers. Based on the result, it can be concluded that there are two major codes used by the Moslem people in Sinduwati village and they switch or mix the codes when they communicate. keyword : code mixing, code switching, code used, domains of language use

Abstract

Penelitian ini merepakan penelitan deskriptif qualitative yang bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan: (1) kegiatan yang dilakukan oleh guru yang dapat memotivasi siswa di dalam kelas Bahasa Inggris. (2) aktifitas yang effektif yang dapat memotivasi siswa di dalam kelas Bahasa Ingris. Subject penelitian ini adalah seorang guru baru di SMA N 2 Singaraja. Penelitian ini mengunakan observasi, mencatat, wawancara, dan FGD dalam pengumpulan data. Setelah data terkumpul, data lalu di transkrip, penggurangi data yang tidak di perlukan, dan hasilnya di transkrip kembali. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa guru Bahasa Inggris menggunakan tiga jenis activitas yang dapat memotivasi siswa seperti: lagu, diskusi, dan game. Activitas yang paling efektif dalam memotivasi siswa adalah game. Menurut Park (2012), game memiliki potensi sebagai sebuah lingkungan pembelajaran karena game memiliki bentuk permainan yang dapat memotivasi siswa melalui element penghiburan. 50% siswa yang berada dalam kelas observasi memilih game sebagai aktifitas kesukaan mereka dalam kelas Bahasa Inggris. This study was a descriptive qualitative research which aimed to describe: (1) describe the teacher activity that motivating students in English as Foreign Language classroom. (2) describe which are the activity can motivate students motivation in English as Foreign Language classroom. The subject of this study was a fresh graduate teacher at SMA N 2 Singaraja. This study used observation, note taking, interview, and focus group discussion in collecting the data. After the data were collected, the data were transcribed, reduce by eliminating those were not appropriate and the result were described. The result of this study showed that, English as Foreign Language teacher used three kind of activities in the classroom such as: game, discussion and song. The effective activities that motivate students’ motivation in English as Foreign Language was game. Based on Park (2012), game have potential as a learning environment because they are a form of play that motivates learners through entertainment elements. 50% students in the observation class choose game as the favorite activity in the English as Foreign Language classroom. keyword : Englis as Foreign Language, Teacher Activities, Students’ Motivation

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengurangi jumlah siswa yang bermasalah dalam kompetensi membaca di kelas VIII G di SMP Negeri 2 Sawan dengan menggunakan Communicative Approach yang dikombinasikan dengan Intensive Reading. Subyek dari penelitian ini adalah 22 siswa yang terdiri dari 13 laki-laki dan 9 perempuan. Penelitian ini dalam bentuk Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus, masing-masing siklus terdiri dari empat tahapan; perencanaan, pelaksanaan, observasi, dan refleksi. Untuk mengumpulkan data, ada tiga jenis instrumen yang digunakan yaitu tes evaluasi, kuesioner, dan buku harian peneliti. Data yang didapatkan dalam penelitian ini dianalisis secara kuantitatif dan secara kualitatif. Data yang diperoleh dari tes observasi awal, dan tes evaluasi dianalisis secara kuantitatif berdasarkan kemampuan membaca siswa secara umum, kemampuan membaca siswa berdasarkan tipe teks, dan kemampuan siswa berdasarkan indikator. Sedangkan, data yang diperoleh dari kuesioner dan buku harian peneliti dianalisis secara kualitatif. Berdasarkan hasil dari kemampuan membaca siswa, ada 17 (77.28%) siswa yang bermasalah dalam membaca pada observasi awal. Di siklus I, jumlah siswa yang bermasalah dalam membaca berkurang menjadi 9 (40.91%) siswa. Setelah cycle II dilaksanakan, jumlah siswa yang bermasalah dalam membaca berkurang lagi menjadi 3 (13.63%) siswa. Sedangkan, dari jumlah siswa yang bermasalah berdasarkan tipe teks dan indikator juga berkurang secara signifikan. Dari hasil tersebut, bisa disimpulkan bahwa implementasi dari Communicative Approach yang dikombinasikan dengan Intensive Reading bisa mengurangi masalah siswa dalam membaca secara umum, tipe teks dan indikator. This study was conducted in order to decrease the number of students that had problem in reading competency in VIII G class of SMP Negeri 2 Sawan by using Communicative Approach Combined with Intensive Reading. The subject of the study were 22 students consisting of 13 males and 9 females. The study was designed in the form of classroom action research. It was conducted in two cycles, each cycle consisted of four steps; planning, action, observation, and reflection. To collect the data, there were three kinds of instruments used namely evaluation test, questionnaire, and researcher’s diary. The data obtained in this study were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The data gained from preliminary observation test and evaluation test were analyzed quantitatively based on students’ general reading competency, students’ reading competency based on text types, and students’ reading competency based on indicators. Meanwhile, the data gained from questionnaire and researcher’s diary were analyzed qualitatively. Based on the result of students’ reading competency, there were 17 (77.28%) students that had problem in reading in preliminary observation. In cyle I, the number of students who had problem in reading decreased into 9 (40.91%) students. After cycle II had been conducted, the number of students that had problem in reading decreased again into 3 (13.63%) students. Meanwhile, from the number of students who had problem based on the text types and indicators were also decreased significantly. From the result, it could be concluded that the implementation of Communicative Approach combined with Intensive Reading was able to decrease the students’ problem in general reading competency, text types, and indicators. keyword : Communicative Approach, Intensive Reading, Reading Competency.

Abstract

Studi ini dimaksudkan untuk (1) mengklasifikasikan kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh pemandu wisata Bahasa Inggris dalam penggunaan Bahasa Inggris lisan di Bali dan (2) Menginvestigasi asal kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh lima pemandu wisata Bahasa Inggris di Bali. Studi ini didesain secara kualitatif. Subyek dari studi ini adalah lima pemandu wisata Bahasa Inggris di Bali. Data dari studi ini adalah kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh lima pemandu wisata Bahasa Inggris di Bali. Data-data dianalisis berdasarkan teori Dulay and Krashen (1982) kesalahan yang dilakukan pemandu wisata diklasifikasikan menjadi empat; peniadaan, pengadaan, kesalahan formasi, dan kesalahan penempatan. Lebih lanjut, asal kesalahan pemandu wisata dikategorikan sebagai interlingual dan intralingual.Kata Kunci : kesalahan, analisa kesalahan, Bahasa Inggris lisan The present study aimed at (1) classifying the errors in spoken English committed by the English speaking tourist guides in Bali and (2) investigating the sources of errors in spoken English committed by the English speaking tourist guides in Bali. This study used qualitative research design. The subjects of the study were the English speaking tourist guides in Bali. The data of the study were the errors made by the guides in spoken descriptive. The data were analyzed based on Dulay and Krashen (1982) the guides’ errors in spoken English were classified into four namely; omission, addition, misformation, and misordering.
