Abstract

This experimental study aimed at finding out the significant effect of Scripted Songs technique and conventional teaching technique towards English competences of fourth grade students of SD Negeri No 6 Dalung, Kuta Utara Sub-District, Badung in academic year 2013/2014. The design of this study was post-test only control group design. The implementation of cluster random sampling technique showed that class 4.A as the control group which was taught by using conventional teaching technique and class 4.C as the experimental group which was taught by using Scripted Songs technique. Both groups consisted of 40 students each. The results of data analysis showed that the students who were taught by implementing Scripted Songs technique performed better than those who were taught by implementing conventional teaching technique. The mean score of experimental group was 79.1 and the control group was 75.5. The results of t-test analysis showed that the tobs was 3.755. It was higher than the value of the tcv at 1.99085 (α = 0.05). Moreover, the result of questionnaire indicated that the implementation of Scripted Songs technique motivated the students in comprehending English competences. In conclusion, Scripted Songs technique contributed in giving highly significant effect to students’ English competences. Keywords: Scripted songs, English competences

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effect of Social Interactive Writing Method on the students’ writing competency. Randomized Posttest-Only Control Group Design was applied in this study which consists of 56 students. The instruments were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The result of the analysis shows that the students who were taught by using Social Interactive Writing Method better than the students who were taught by using Conventional Method. It had been proven from the mean score was 87.64 while the control group was 67.92. Furthermore, from the analysis by using inferential statistic, it was found that the value of t observed (tob) was 12.012. It was higher than t critical value (tcv) which was 1.64 (ɑ = .05). After comparing t observed and t critical value, it was clear that t observed (tob) exceeded t critical value (tcv). In conclusion, the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, it could be confirmed that the application of Social Interactive Writing Method gave significant effect toward students’ writing competency. Keywords: Social Interactive Writing Method, Writing competency

Abstract

The study was categorized as classroom action research which was done for the purpose of improving the students’ reading comprehension at Class X.A3 in SMKN 2 Singaraja in academic year 2013/2014 through the implementation of R.A.P Paraphrasing strategy. The study was done in two cycles where each cycle consisted of four main activities; planning, action, observation and reflection. To collect the data, there were three kinds of instrument used namely researcher’s diary, questionnaire, and tests. Furthermore, the data obtained in this study were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The data gained in pre-test and post-tests were analyzed quantitatively, while the data from researcher’s diary and questionnaire were analyzed qualitatively. Based on the results of this study, it was found that the students’ reading comprehension at Class X.A3 in SMKN 2 Singaraja had improved significantly. It was indicated by the result of students’ tests on which in pre-test, from 35 students in total, there were only 14.29% students passing the school passing grade. But in post-test I, the number increased into 71.43% students, and finally in post-test II, the criteria of success had been reached as 85.71% students could successfully pass the standard passing score. In addition, the success of the study was also based on the results of the questionnaire as well as the researcher’s diary which showed the students’ positive attitudes toward the implementation of the R.A.P. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis qualitative research aimed at identifying kinds of code that are used by Moslem people in Telagamas Village and analyzing how they used those codes to communicate with each other and other people around this village. There were three domains chosen in this study, namely family, friendship, and neighborhood. The data were collected using two techniques, namely observation, and interview technique. There were three conversations recorded in all domains of language used and the data were analyzed using observation sheet in a form of table. The results of the study show that there were 3 kinds of code used by the Moslem people in Telagamas Village based on 610 utterances that had been analyzed, namely Sasak language, Balinese, and Indonesian. In addition, there were 46 utterances categorized as code switching and code mixing used by the villagers. There were 32 utterances (70%) that belonged to code switching and 14 utterances (30%) to code mixing. Keywords: Code, Code Switching, Code Mixing

Abstract

The objective of this research was to know whether there is any correlation between memory and uses of the words meanings and usages. There are there research problems were examined. It is about the total words meanings and usages remembered by the students, the uses of the words meanings and usages in the four language skills, and the correlation between memory and uses of the words meanings and usages. This research conducted at SMP N 5 Singaraja and the sample used was students in the seven grade consisted of 62 students. The data were collected using test and questionnaire. The result of test shows that the highest total number of words meanings and usages remembered by the students is 115 words (90%) from the total number of words is 128 words while the lowest total number of words meanings and usages remembered by the students is 64 words (50%). The most word class remembered by students in terms of word meanings and usages is noun that is 75% and word class adverb is 42% remembered by the students. The result of questionnaire shows that students used words meanings and usages frequently in reading. In reading, 62 students (100%) used words meanings and usages in terms of word class noun, verb, adjective, and adverb. The result of data analysis shows that there is a significant correlation between memory and uses of words meanings and usages. It could be seen by looking at the result of Point-Biserial Correlation coefficient r that is 0.564. Key Words: memory, uses of  words meanings and usages
