Abstract

This research was motivated by the low ability of students to understand scientific concepts and solve scientific problems. The aim of this research is to analyze the effectiveness of the PBL learning model in improving Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) abilities. A quantitative approach was used in this research using the Quasi Experimental method with a Non Equivalent Control Group design to determine the effectiveness of learning using the problem based learning (PBL) model in improving students' high-level thinking skills in vocational school student product competencies. The sample selection technique used was purposive sampling by selecting a sample of 200 class III vocational school students. Data is collected by using is pretest-intervention-posttest. The test conducted in normality, homogeneity, and hypothesis tests. The results of the research show that the problem-based learning method is effective in improving high-level thinking abilities significantly compared to control abilities using conventional methods. Overall student cognitive learning outcomes from the pre-test and post-test always increase, where in the experimental class it increases from 28.45 to 68.6 while in the control class it increases from 23.78 to 55.32. Then a Wilcoxon test of 0.000 (2-tailed sig <0.05) was carried out to determine the magnitude of the intervention effect. Based on the test results, students who received intervention with PBL experienced a significant increase in high-level thinking skills in product competency for vocational school students compared to students who received intervention with conventional methods.

Abstract

Statistics learning in the time of distance education makes students uneasy due to the difficulties in the learning environment and processes. This article aims to analyze the level of difficulty faced by students in statistics distance education and captures the causal factors affecting it. Cross-sectional secondary data were used from a current study in literature and described by standard statistical measures. The study utilized the level of difficulty in learning statistics during online setup as the dependent variable in the form of a scale of 1 to 10. The study used standard descriptive measures. Moreover, this study also use quantile regression models were constructed. Results depicted that students were facing "difficulty" as they learn statistics during distance education. The quantile regression revealed that the learning environment, inaccessible places (rural areas), and more family members are the statistically significant factors that influence the difficulty level in learning statistics online. This implies that due to the distractive place of learning, students cannot focus and penetrate their lessons. In addition, students were struggling with communication technology and internet access wherein it is vital in classroom engagement and the acquisition of learning resources. Hence, the study suggests that students must be supported by the government in regard to their learning needs and teachers must promote a positive and interesting educational environment. Furthermore, teachers must undergo training and workshops on how to be equipped in teaching statistics online.

Abstract

Contemporary issues is essential for K-12 learners to develop their awareness of the social conditions as potential problem solvers. Hence, proficiency assessment is necessary to check their competency acquisition. This study aims to analyze the Grade 10 students’ proficiency and challenges on contemporary issues among public schools in Central Philippines in the importance of studying contemporary issues, political rights, human rights, and educational rights relative to sex and strand. Utilizing a descriptive-comparative approach, a validated and reliability tested questionnaire and checklist were administered to 261 students using beginning, developing, approaching proficiency, proficiency, and advanced responses. In data analysis, mean, standard deviation, frequency count, percentage, rank, Mann Whitney, and Kruskal Wallis were employed. Generally, they have approaching proficiency in all areas indicating that the competencies were not fully acquired. With this, improvement on instruction is critical. Comparatively, there was a difference when grouped to sex and strand where females and TVL students rated higher proficiency than their counterparts. Meanwhile, they are challenged on their motivation to learn, traditional teaching strategies, time management in accomplishing tasks, inadequate learning facilities, and insufficient interactive learning opportunities. Given the results, these imply the importance of improving the teachers’ instructional strategies in ensuring the students’ quality proficiency in Contemporary issues.

Abstract

Statistical literacy emphasizes the ability to read, interpret, understand, communicate, and critically analyze information data in the current century. Students' statistical literacy skills in elementary schools are considered insufficient. The reason is the limited problem-solving process on statistical literacy material. This research is to solve problems regarding elementary school students' statistical literacy by using the DAPIC problem-solving process (Define, Assess, Plan, Implement, and Communicate). An experimental method with pretest-posttest control group design was used on 38 elementary school students. The instrument used was a statistical literacy test analyzed using the Aiken V formula. The results of the study provided an average N-Gain value in the moderate category, which is less than equal to 0.3-0.7. The Wilcoxon test shows a value of 0.002, so there is an average difference between the two classes. Thus, the DAPIC problem-solving process positively impacts elementary school students' statistical literacy.

Abstract

Sex education is important to educate young individuals that make them equipped with the right knowledge and attitude concerning healthy sex life. This research article aimed to analyze how parents perceive the integration of sex education in the elementary curriculum of selected public elementary schools in Southern Leyte, Philippines. As for data collection, primary information from parents was considered that include demographic profiles such as age, civil status, educational attainment, religion, and socio-economic status because these factors were believed to affect parents' perceptions. In addition, parents' perceptions of sex education were gathered regarding intellectual, emotional, moral, psychological, and social aspects. The descriptive-correlational research design was employed to elucidate the significant relationship between parents' profile and their perception of the integration of sex education in the elementary curriculum using some standard statistical measures and the Chi-square test. Results showed that parents had strongly unfavorable perceptions of sex education in terms of intellectual, emotional, moral, psychological, and social aspects. Using the Chi-square test, the profile of parents was directly related to their perception of sex education. In conclusion, parents' negative perceptions of sex education at the elementary level are believed to be detrimental to their children because they may lack knowledge of sex education, and in fact, discussing sex education is still considered taboo in the Philippine culture, particularly at the elementary level.
