Abstract

The increasing demand towards dental implant in society with intermediate until high socio-economic status has forced implant practitioners to be more professional to work. This study aimed to find the differences between dental implant placement location before and after the dental implant examination by using the panoramic radiography. This research was a “Quasi Experimental” design with “Pre-Post Test”. This study was conducted in the RSGMP FKG UNHAS with the subject of treatment by the number of 30 samples, included both male and female, aged 20-50 years, losing 1-2 dental units, had no systemic diseases, no proximal caries , minimum jawbone was 5 mm in width and 9 mm in height. Data was analyzed with SPSS Program version 12 for Windows. The results showed that there were significant differences in the disposition of dental implant before and after panoramic radiography examination. As conclusion, before the installation of dental panoramic implants radiographycally, all samples had good criteria, after installation of the implants 56.7% had good criteria, 16.7% moderate and 26.7% bad criteria. Based on gender, male had higher percentage for good dental implants placement compared to female. Female had higher percentage of dental implant shifted to mesial and on the other hand, male had higher percentage of dental implant shifted to distal.

Abstract

Preclinical session is one way of training dental undergraduates to prepare teeth for restorations. The aims of the study were to evaluate students’ perception and satisfactory level in preparing tooth for porcelain fused to metal crown in preclinical fixed prosthodontics sessions. A total of 104 fourth year dental undergraduates students participated in this study. Lecture consisted of the diagrams of step-by-step procedure in preparing porcelain fused to metal crown on tooth 24. Video demonstration was also conducted. After they were satisfied with the preparation, they were asked to answer a series of multiple choice questions on their performance. Only 92 students completed the questionnaire. Majority of the students taught that their occlusal and axial reductions were about right. As for the margin, 50 students claimed that the margin was located on gingival margin while 88 students said that they prepared shoulder margin buccally and 4 students created chamfer margin buccally. Seventy four out of 92 students were slightly satisfied with their crown preparations. Twenty five students said that they were very competent and confident in doing crown preparation to patients. Almost all fourth year dental students could perform porcelain-fused-to-metal crown preparation with confidence. As conclusion, exposure to our teaching methods and aids appears to help them in preparing these tasks.

Abstract

Onlay is one of the recommended final restoration for root canal treated teeth and resin composite is a material of choice for making onlay and can be done in semi-direct method. Bevel and butt-joint cavo surface margins have been suggested in inlay restoration and this study was conducted to evaluate the compressive strengths and fracture patterns of both type of margins in semi-direct onlays. Sixteen upper premolars were mounted in 45 degree angle and loaded with compressive tests with Universal Testing Machine. Mean compressive strength of group with bevel margin was 900,62  171,27 N, and 1021,40  183,87 N for the butt-joint group. This difference was not significant statistically (p=0,208). Onlays with bevel margin, fractured at the onlay, the junction between onlay and tooth and at the tooth, and were mainly affected the buccal cusp. For the butt-joint group, fractured mainly occurred at the onlays and affected the buccal and palatal cusps. In conclusion, the choice of cavosurface margin resin composite onlay restoration in root canal treated teeth is according to clinician’s desire and skill.

Abstract

Candida albicans is one of the fungal resistances and the mostly found in endodontic infections. The exsistence of this fungi is able to make colonization or a good adherance on the dentin and to form biofilm in dentinal walls. The use of dressing root canal recomended to eliminate the microorganism and Chitosan blangkas had been choosen as an alter-native dressing which originate from natural, biocompatible, characteristic of antibacteri and antifungi similiar with non-biologic material. This study was aimed to know the effect of high molecule chitosan blangkas with glicerin use Agar Diffusion Method. Paper disk (Ǿ 6 mm) soaked by solution of high molecule chitosan blangkas with glycerin for 60 minute then put in Potato Dextrose Agar media inoculated by Candida albicans and observed after the incubation for 24 hours. In conclusion, the high molecule chitosan blangkas in each concentration tested showed the high antifungal effect. The antifungal effect would increase in high concentration. MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) of high molecule chitosan blangkas with glycerin was 0,006%.

Abstract

The success of fixed restoration preparation relies on several factors i.e. preparation of abutment tooth which must consider pulp-dentin complex and degree of occlusal traumatism. The thinner remaining dentin thickness during abutment preparation, the easier for inflammation and microbial invasion to occur. Inflammation of the pulp with release of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin, interleukin and microbial invasion through dentinal tubules played an important role in bone resorption and periapical lesions. This article was aimed to find out the treatment for periapical abscess resulted from porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) fixed restoration on maxillary left canine. A 56 year-old male patient was referred to clinic at Department of Conservative Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry University of Sumatera Utara. He had a bridge from 23 to 26 on his maxillary left side. He felt discomfort in his maxillary left canine. Radiographic evidence showed radiolucency at apical area and clinical evaluation revealed periapical abscess at gingival mucosa of the tooth. Patient felt tenderness to percussion and palpation. Sequence of the treatment procedures was undertaken as follows: trephination and abscess drainage, root canal treatment using step back technique, obturation using lateral condensation method and eventually restored with composite resin using silane as coupling agent. At two-month evaluations, patient had no dental complaint, no tenderness to percussion and palpation as well as absence of clinical and radiographic periapical abscess. As conclusion, root canal treatment following hermetic root canal obturation and proper final restoration for periapical abscess resulted from PFM fixed restoration will determine the success of the treatment outcome.

Abstract

Periodontal disease is characterised by low-grade infection of the gums and tooth support structures by Gram-negative, predominantly anaerobic bacteria. Periodontitis may cause preterm birth by causing low-grade bacteraemia, which lodges in the decidua, chorion and amnion or by releasing endotoxin into the maternal circulation, which triggers intrauterine inflammation and preterm birth. Approximately 25% of PLBW cases occur without any of the known risk factors, which have prompted continuation of the search for other possible causal factors. Collectively, the studies summarized in this paper suggest a model wherein chronic periodontal infection, serving as a reservoir for bacterial products (such as LPS) or various inflammatory mediators (or both), may play an important role in the development of PLBW. On that basis, the authors felt the need for further review on the effect of periodontitis on the health of babies born, and is expected to provide insight into the influence of periodontitis on the health of babies born so the dentist can be more critical and increasing role in preventing and improving maternal health pregnancy and abortion standarizations. As conclusion, the poor health of periodontium during pregnancy is one of the risks of preterm and low birth weight
