Abstract

The narrative verses in the Holy Qur’an mainly function to lead the morality (akhlaq) of the society. Islam has guiding principles for interpreting such verses so that Moslems can gain objective comprehension upon them. One of the foremost principles is to view the narratives as mysterious events and only Allah SWT knows the sequential facts-say, the real chronologies– of the stories. Besides, Moslems should not rely the validity of the narratives on ahl al-kitab’s explanation. It is, finally, imperative that any stories be confirmed and rechecked across reliable sources, such as al-Qur’an, hadits, and ulama’s trustworthy interpretation (tafsir). As the interpretation of narrative verses spread very fast orally or in written, it might be unexpectedly interfered by some Israiliyat stories. This paper provides three insights to respond the subsistence of Israiliyats: first, the validity of the Israiliyats should always be questioned except when al Quran and Hadits have provided evident points of justification; second, the Israiliyats whose content is appropriate with the teachings of al Quran and hadits can enrich our religious perspectives; third, the Israiliyats whose content contradicts Islamic values (syari’ah) should be disregarded and thrown away; and fourth, it is prohibited to tell false stories.

Abstract

This paper studies about the relationship between power and (the will to gain) knowledge. It reviews such key points as that every human being has modalities of knowledge whose function depends on his/her will and that human being has the will to power in addition to the will to know. Both wills are inseparable. Human beings cannot reach the power without knowledge; and knowledge cannot be reached without strong will and modality of power. However, as this paper proposes, the will to power and the will to know are purposive; they are not without goal. In Islamic perspective, reaching a power is not for the power itself; rather, it should be directed to reach the ultimate goal of manifesting the ‘God values.’ Islam guides people toward the ‘ilahiyah power’ or ‘the Spirit of God’ as the ultimate goal of achieving power. As a result, the idea of power/knowledge should be completed by faith/power/knowledge relation.

Abstract

Abstract

Al Quran contains conceptual ideas related to theology (aqidah), worship, human relation (muamalah), science, philosophy, and many others. It includes some regulations to manage the attitude of human beings, both as individuals and as social creatures, for the sake of achieving better future in the world and in the eternal life (akhirat). It is no wonder that al-Qur’an also brings up some basic concepts of management, which are academically acknowledged as al Quran–based Management or Quranic Management. As this paper mainly concerns, al Quran encompasses several verses explaining the concepts of management. It requires Moslems to be autonomous society by planning any actions, preparing and positioning qualified human resources, occupying the assets as well as possible, consolidating the branches, and operating the wealth into beneficial activities. Such an ideal can be straightforwardly accomplished by performing the Quranic Management principles, which comprise amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar, truth, justice, and amanah (trustworthiness).

Abstract

Ibnu Arabi, the Grand Master of Islam, is a great thinker whose controversial thought, wahdat al-wujud, has significantly influenced the mystiques of Islam. The meaning of wahdat al-wujud is basically two folds, i.e. that Being is the only One which exists and that the universe is merely a manifestation of the One. The One Being here refers to Allah SWT. The One covers up all the existing phenomena and functions as a resource which emanates the entire universe. In this context, He is referred to as al-Haqiqat al-Muhammadiyah. He might also be viewed as both the Universal Soul for His being the source of cosmos that governs the universe and the Universal Body for His reflecting any actions on every single micro existence that forms the universe. Furthermore, when His existence is deemed as a jauhar (jewel) that face-up any occurrences, He is typically known as al-haba’. The concept of wahdat al-wujud can actually be simplified into the principle of laa maujuda illa wujud al-wahid (no existence except the Existing One, the Being). The One might reveal His own existence into different martabat or levels: Martabat Ahadiyah, Martabat Wahidiyah, and Martabat Tajalli Syuhudi. Those standing points trigger Ibnu Arabi to believe that any kinds of realities or existences are nothing but a true reflection of the One.

Abstract

Religions always have two values, which are very distinctive, i.e. the goodness and the badness. Al Quran describes these two qualities with various uslub related to Arabic culture: al hasanat and al sayyi’at. The goodness and the badness are always “in a war” until the end of the world. As religions, both Islam and Zoroaster rely on the faith toward God to edify their followers for performing the goodness and leaving the badness. This paper reviews to some extent–some commonalities between the moral teachings of Islam and those of Zoroaster (excluding few shared concepts of theology and creation process of the first living man). Moslems are required to apply the concept of amar ma’ruf nahi munkar, while Zoroastrians are called to implement the four principles of moral attitude: putting the weapon down, ending any quarrel, exploring the independence, and performing good attitude.

Abstract

Modern biology has been developing so rapidly that the field can amazingly provides great benefits for human beings’ prosperous life either at present or in the future.  It may, however, influence the ethical aspects negatively due to reductionism. Therefore, bioethics is highly required to control the devastating growth of modern biology and drive it toward persistent commitment upon human benefits (maslahah). This paper suggests that Bioethics–based learning be implemented in any educational level to develop the students’ critical thinking. Such learning might be put into practice by promoting the ethical decision-making method integrated with religious (Islamic) perspective. The integration would result in the students’ considering the six principles of Islamic bioethics in any modern biology studies so that the students can precisely predict the beneficial or dangerous consequences of their scientific activities.
