Abstract

This paper critically views the epistemology of Muhammad Abid al Jabiri’s interpretation in his book, Madkhal ila al Quran al Karim. His latest work is projected to make the Quran relevant to mankind today and with certainly critiquing classical Quranic studies that have been constructed by previous scholars. Starting from Arab criticism, which is expected to synergize the gap between Turath and modernity, al Jabiri tried out his theory in the realm of Quranic studies oriented to maintain its originality and interpretation from sectarian influence. Focusing on al Jabiri’s review on the Quran, this paper examines and associates some of the problems with the epistemology of critique in Arab reasoning. Finally, it is inferred that the epistemologic offer of al Jabiri used in Turath is not fully applicable in Quranic studies for several reasons. First, the Quranic studies existed within the chain of sanad in its formation. Secondly, at the application stage, al Jabri often overlooked the sanad and narrations from the companions.

Abstract

The emergence of a wide variety of interpretations of the Qur’an methodology often forget the methods offered by the classical scholars. Though the appearance of the existing methods of interpretation as it is today can not be separated from the rules of interpretation which was initiated by the classical scholars of the period. The Qur'an as a book of guidance for human beings can not be understood directly without the rules of interpretation that apply. One of the rules of interpretation used in interpreting the Qur'an is a rule of interpretation of the word friend. The interpretation of the word friend is regarded as highly representative explanation of the validity of the understanding of the Qur'an. Because friends are people that are still able to meet directly with the Prophet, of course, the rules of interpretation that are used are not much distorted.

Abstract

The interpretation is an effort to understand, to explain the intent, knowing the content of the verses of the Koran. As a result of man's work is different from the Koran, there, the interpretation occurs experiencing developments of classical, medieval to the modern period and even contemporary. Diversity both in the method (manhaj / tariqah), style (nau '), as well as approaches (Alvan) used is unavoidable in a work of interpretation. Although there are also commentaries appear in modern times but its interpretation still follows the pattern of classical and medieval period as confirmed Nawawi al-Bantani in Muqaddimah (Iqtida lil 'bi al-Salaf al-fi Tadwin' ilm) commentary. Therefore, it is no exaggeration when Tafsir Al-Munir or Angry Labid regarded as a bridge between the traditional interpretation to modern times.

Abstract

The aim of the article is to trace the development of the Western scholar’s studies on hadith as the second of Islamic sources. It started from the eighteenth century, and was an implication of their study on Islamic history, legal and theology. The most central problem associated with Prophetic hadith has undoubtedly been their authenticity. This issue occupied Muslim specialists since the early classical period. The first generation of Western scholars inclined to doubt the hadith authenticity, and then, followed by the next generation to convince that hadiths are forged. One of the ultimate theories to prove the hadith authenticity is “Common Link” theory, that hadith is originated from the common link figure, not the prior, moreover the Prophet. There are two or three generations from the figure to the Prophet. However, there is a scholar’s tent to refuse the previous research result on hadith, approving Muslim scholars opinion that most hadiths have been real event of what the Prophet did and said. They demonstrate some evidence by having some research results as the previous generation did.

Abstract

Quranic perspectives on gender-oriented ecology propose eco humanist theocentric theory. This is based on the Quranic description regarding the interconnection and harmonious interaction between a human and him/her self, a human with another human, a human with the universe, and a human with God, regardless male or female. This study employs tafsir maudu’i (thematic), historical-critical-contextual methods, and qualitative approach. The result shows three representations of gender identity, namely biology paired features, various terms referring to men and women interactions, and the balance of femininity and masculinity within every human being. It indicates the possible equal quality of intellectual, emotion and roles in their social life. In addition, the Quran illustrates that both masculine and feminine characteristics have positive and negative sides. This, in fact, has been a debatable notion in the academic world related to men and women stereotyping, which has influenced their social role divisions. While in natural ecology, gender identity is found in three representations, namely biology paired features, pairing in terms of feminine and masculine characteristics/qualities, and pronouns/damir referring to the male and female.
