Abstract

This paper aims to calculate and analyze the contribution of productivity of production factors capital andlabor and technology in manufacturing output growth in East Java. The role of technology in the productionprocess referred to as Total Productivity Factor (TPF). Analysis techniques used in this paper is the Residumethod, namely the difference between the growths in total output minus total productivity of factors ofproduction. The results showed that the majority of East Java’s manufacturing industry is labor-intensive industrieswith the technology that is not capital intensive. Thus, the strategy and policy development is the mobilizationof manpower and develop appropriate technology which does not absorb much capital. However, this labormobilization policy needs to consider enactment of the law of diminishing returns that can lower the marginalproductivity of manufacturing output in East Java. Keywords: Manufacturing industry, the residual method, the productivity of factors of production, total factorproductivity

Abstract

This article explores neo-liberal economic development concepts on general and criticism on them in the form of alternatives provided. Actually, the concepts themselves have not been openly accepted by the World Bank and the IMF, while since 1990s both international financial institutions have been for several times forcing the application of the concepts in countries that received loan from the institutions. This topic becomes very important since Indonesia has experienced many economic policies which are forcefully driven or demanded by the IMF or the World Bank. Those kind of policies are, for instance, capital liberalization, trade liberalization, privatization, and structural adjustment program. Neo-liberal development concepts are based on liberal economy ideas only, which consist of free market profit and private asset ownership. The concepts have been applied to many developing countries in the form of structural adjustment program package. Keywords: neo-liberal, structural adjustment, liberalization, economic development

Abstract

This study provides the possible effects of trade liberalization commitments (WTO and APEC) on the bilateral trade between Japan and the ASEAN-5 countries (Indonesia, Thailand, Phillipines, Malaysia and Singapore) and China. The degree of the export rivalry or competition between these countries in the Japanese market is examined in two stages. First, using the GTAP (Global Trade Analysis Project Model) to simulate the liberalization impact on the export of these countries in the Japanese market, as well as the Japanese export to these countries. Second, by using the conventional shift-share methodology in order to sense the degree of competition. Findings from this empirical work show that in general China will benefit more than ASEAN-5 countries from the WTO and APEC trade liberalization, especially in its export of textile and resource based manufactures to the Japanese market. Contrarily, ASEAN-5 countries will somewhat suffer some disadvantage on its export to Japan. However, Indonesia and the Phillipines can still rely on its export of resource based manufactures, while Malaysia would still maintain its advantage on its high technology and capital intensive products, Singapore on its service sector, and Thailand on is agricultural manufactures. Japan would benefit most on its bilateral trade with China. Simulations show that there will be an increase of intra-trading, especially in the textile market with China, and agricultural manufactures market with Thailand. Keywords : Trade liberalization, export competitiveness, GTAP, specialization

Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to examine the effect of failing firms (firms which arepotential to be bankrupt) on auditor switching. Hypothesis was derived from Schwartz and Menon (1985) which implies that failing firms have a greater tendency to switch auditors than healthier firms do. The Z score (Altman model) was used as a proxy to measure the potential of bankruptcy. This method was applied since it has been developed in several countries such as US, Germany, Brazil, Australia, England, Ireland, Canada, the Netherlands, and France. Annual report and Indonesian Capital Market Directory were used to collect the data for a sample of 7 firms that changed their auditors and 7 firms that did not. Those four-teen (14) firms have been selected as sample among firms in consumer goods industries to answer the question about the impact of firns with potential to go bankrupt on auditor switching. Chi-Square result shows that firms with potential to go bankrupt could not influence auditor switching. Keywords: auditor switching, bankruptcy, Altman Z-Score, failing firm

Abstract

This research is aimed at giving empirical evidence that earning management does influence performance. The 153 sample from 1997 to 2001 is determined by using stratified random sampling. Multiple regression analysis is used to test hypotheses based on this archival data. The result of the analysis shows that earning management influences performance. This is in line with Barnea et al. (1976), Mones (1987), Ilmainir (1993), Hapworth (1953) in Ashari et al. (1994), Arhibald (1967) in Ashari et al. (1994), Ashari et al.
